Ashley Young wants to stay at Villa
Tuesday 20th July 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Villa winger Ashley Young is ready to end doubts about his future and commit himself to the club for the peak years of his career.
The 25-year-old England international has two years of his current deal remaining.
But in a summer which sees manager Martin O’Neill needing to sell to raise serious funds for changes to his squad, Young has not escaped speculation about his future.
Team-mate James Milner remains the favourite to leave for Manchester City, giving O’Neill the capital required for new signings at a time when American owner Randy Lerner has put a cap on the club’s record-breaking spending.
Young has also been linked to Tottenham but made it clear he is content to pursue his ambitions at Villa.
He said: “That’s news to me. I am happy here. I have two years left on my contract and if the club wanted to sit down and discuss a longer commitment I would be more than happy to do so.
“This is a terrific club where we believe we can challenge again. We did a lot last season and we have set our targets to better that this time.
“Of course it’s going to be tough – it seems to get tougher every year in the Premier League. But you have to overcome the obstacles.
“Things don’t come easy in life.”
Young evaded questions about his England prospects in the wake of the World Cup debacle and the new signings expected to change the face of O’Neill’s squad before the transfer deadline passes.
He said: “I’m not the person you should be asking about that.
“We have a great manager. I don’t think anyone has a bad word to say about him.”
