Ishmael Miller happy to be involved in pre-season
Friday 16th July 2010, 2:30PM BST.
While Albion’s players endure the pain of pre-season, Ishmael Miller is simply thrilled to be involved.
The big striker is suffering with his team-mates as the squad are put through their paces here in Mierlo.
But, while Miller is as tired as anyone after a week of hard running, a part of him is loving it.
A year ago Miller was stranded at home unable to train after a setback in his rehabilitation from knee surgery left him back at square one.
And even his comeback last term was far from satisfactory for the former Manchester City man.
But he believes the current gruelling workload can restore him to maximum efficiency. “I feel a lot better than I did in January and February,” said Miller.
“I was just coming back from injury and I was stiff and didn’t feel myself.
“It takes a lot of time. If you look at the World Cup, Fernando Torres had just come back from injury and he looked a yard off the pace for his ability.
“And Robin van Persie, even though Holland got to the final, didn’t do that well considering how great a player he is. If it happens to the best then it can happen to players of my calibre too.
“When you’ve been injured for so long you need people around you keeping you positive.
“You go through difficult times and periods when you don’t feel yourself and you wonder whether it’s ever going to come back.
“But at the start of pre-season I knew this is what I needed. It is my first pre-season in two or three years so it will be good for me to get that sharpness back.”
Miller is no longer feeling the ill-effects of the knee injury that wrecked his last campaign in the Premier League.
But he admitted the lengthy lay-off is taking its toll in other ways.
“My knee feels alright,” he said. “It’s the other parts of my body that I keep getting niggles with now!
“But everything is going very well so far.”
