No plans for new striker at Walsall

Chris Hutchings has revealed he has no plans to sign a new striker – with the Walsall boss ready to keep faith with his forwards.

The manager believes he has enough firepower to compete for the play-offs in League One.

Darren Byfield, Troy Deeney, Alex Nicholls and Will Grigg will spearhead the Saddlers’ attack next season.

Hutchings said: “Everyone knows the strikers we’ve got and I don’t see any cause to change that. We know what they can do and we’re happy with them.

“We’ve signed two young ones and Will Grigg. We have got young strikers with potential and we don’t want to stop that progress.

“We’ve got older lads who are good professionals and want to stay in the team – they will be looking at those young guns behind them.”

The Saddlers are well stocked up front with first-year professionals Jamie Paterson and George Bowerman in reserve while Steve Jones can also play through the middle.

Hutchings has signed goalkeeper Jonny Brain and midfielder Paul Marshall, while giving trials to ex-Bristol Rovers defender Aaron Lescott and former Southampton centre-back Oliver Lancashire.

But the manager knows the Saddlers haven’t got cash to waste and insists he must be careful when picking his targets.

He said: “You have to be, we get plenty of e-mails from abroad and they all seem to want to come to England and play, but our scouting network is working and we have to be selective.

“You always look at young players and think ‘he’s not bad, is he going to be left in the system or are they going to fulfil their potential?’

“Sometimes they have to go elsewhere to do that.”

Hutchings isn’t afraid to use youngsters Paterson, Bowerman and defender Alex Hickman should his top transfer targets fail to come off.

He said: “You want to cover all positions but it depends if you can get the players to do that.

“We’ve got three young boys who we signed as first year professionals and Sean Geddes, Will Grigg and Darryl Westlake.

“We want to get a couple more in with experience but if we can’t do that and have to get the young ones in we’ll go down that line.”

Golly gosh, im so excited by the noises coming out of Walsall F.C I might go and buy a season ticket! NOT! Why is every article trying to dampen even the slightly excitement?

We KNOW we don’t need strikers but 3 inexperienced defenders, a 4th division goalie and a serious lack of quality in midfield might need addressing in the next 3 weeks.Just a suggestion.

Deeney and Byfield will do I think, but if we don’t get another striker Hutchings might have to overcome his fear of bringing Will Grigg on….he must shivering at the thought of that…

I think the point he i smaking is that we have enough strikers so he is going to concentrate on getting players in other positions.
