Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Aiden McGeady on Villa’s hitlist
Tuesday 13th July 2010, 10:53AM BST.
Celtic winger Aiden McGeady is emerging as one of the players on Martin O’Neill’s shopping list as the Villa manager plots a re-shuffle this summer.
McGeady’s absence from Celtic’s United States tour this week has been explained by the club as a result of a thigh injury.
But Scottish sources insist Celtic are aware of interest from Villa, with Parkhead boss Neil Lennon’s former Leicester team-mate Emile Heskey a possible makeweight in the deal.
The talented 24-year-old playmaker is one of any number of targets to whom Villa are being linked while O’Neill maintains a low profile.
But his strategy and spending power for the summer remains dependent on how the James Milner transfer saga plays out.
Villa have been linked with a variety of creative players in the event of Milner eventually joining Manchester City including Arsenal striker Eduardo, Spurs pair Robbie Keane and David Bentley along with AC Milan’s Jan Huntelaar but, with owner Randy Lerner holding the purse strings, all will depend on Milner’s destiny.
While O’Neill is keeping his thoughts to himself, there is no shortage of advice from around the fringes of the club with former European Cup winner Tony Morley now in the camp believing Milner should be sold.
He said: “If I was the manager, I’d let him go. Is he unhappy? We don’t know, but if you can get £25m for an unhappy player, that might be worth considering.
“Martin O’Neill deals in the transfer market at the last minute and I wouldn’t worry about the Villa fans as he always comes up with some decent players.
“I think it is going to be harder next season, because of the amount of money Manchester City are splashing about, other teams have to try to keep up with them but you’ve got to be realistic.
“I feel sorry for Martin because everyone’s expecting them to push into that top four.”

As a Celtic Supporter with a season ticket down the Villa i hope this move does not happen Mcgeady is a one trick pony and selfish we already have Young (good in 1 game out of 10) and Downing (Rubbish) we need quailty and hunger! Heskey is heskey (ok holding ball up but does not score enough never mind falls over and gets injured when challenged!) Villa need to get rid and Celtic dont need another donkey! Milner is a good player but not worth £25m so lets get Ireland and richards in exchange and a young goalkeeper to challenge Brad!

Andy, since you dont recognise quality when you see it,eg Ashley Young,i’ll take your comment with a pinch of salt !

With Young and McGeady of the wings you would have some serious fire power and very tricky. Ireland in the middle the guy could spot a pass from across the field and Agbodlahor with the pace up front and Keane with the finese you have a top four contender next year.

Has Randy Lerner run out of cash? Seems lots of these deals are dependent on players being moved on. He’s looking more and more like Doug Ellis with better public relations, an American accent and less understanding of football!

If Ashley Young was as you say quality he would have got into a poor England Squad! So arm chair supporter get off ur butt and attend some games and you would soon find out Ashley Young is not quality!!!! I attend home and away and can count on one hand the amount of good games he had last season!

Andy i agree with you totally, i’m a season ticket holder myself have been for 13 years and two seasons ago young was amazing but now its same old with him beat the player(when he does) then turn on himself and downing is racked bring albrighton in at least he can put a cross in and we need keane to link midfield with gabby and ireland is a must with the milner deal ireland plus 15mil have milner and we need a new right back although young is great RB IMO his not getting younger and o’neill obviously has a problem with him so bring in that young matthews lad from cardiff looks good and delph will be able to fill milners boot with ease after his recovery

ok it goes like this and i am a season ticket holder and i went to most aways last season,i agree with naldy in is disbelief at the knocking of ash,yes he was not at his best last season but this guy is a class act and its not poor delivery but having a forward getting on the end of it,aggy took stick a couple of seasons ago from some villa fans but is improving each season and along with ash are very dangerous and i would not want them playing against my side,on mcgeady if oneill thinks he can cut it then thats good enough for me,yes he has made some strange signings but aslo some excellent ones in friedel, warnock, cuellar as a cb,dunne, collins, ash, downing who will be a good player for villa(rubbish)find that an amazing thing to hear, carew, oneill also made barry a better player as he as done with milner, where were man city etc when martin payed 12 million, there are some fans who almost drove out the best thing to happen to aston villa for a long time, let martin continue with the excellent job he is doing, watching aston villa since martin arrived is a breath of fresh air and we are a club on the up and that are talked about,3 6th place finishes in a row and 2 wembley apperances and the guy still gets hammered, unbelievable.

Andy, you aint the only season ticket holder at VP,ive been one for the best part of thirty years!
Ashley Young may not have had his best season by his standards, but he is still far and away the most gifted of our players, and as for him not going to the world cup,Emille Heskey did, enough said really !
