Defender Steven Mouyokolo has revealed Wolves tried to sign him six months ago.

The £2.5million centre-back finally signed for the club from Hull last month as one of five permanent arrivals with Adlene Guedioura, Jelle van Damme, Steven Fletcher and Stephen Hunt.

Stoke were also linked with the 23-year-old, but Mouyokolo stressed Wolves chased him long and hard.

He said: “The only club who were involved and really wanted to sign me were Wolves.

“They made an offer, not just this summer but also in December and January they were after me.

“I knew from then that Mick McCarthy was following me, so for me it wasn’t just about the end of the season. Their interest was from before.

“Of course there were other clubs but sometimes you have just talk, just speculation.

“I think a lot of clubs were focused on the World Cup and it’s hard to know what was happening, but I know there was a lot of interest.”

Mouyokolo does not expect to play immediately.

He said: “Jody Craddock has been great and was player of the year last year, so I can’t say I’m here to play straight away.

“But everyone has to be competitive to help the team and I’ll give my best, stay fit and be ready.

“Then I’ll give my heart and give all that I can to this team.”

The France-born defender also believes he and the squad will be stronger after a year in the Premier League.

He said: “Everybody has got experience now. The players here at Wolves have learned from what happened last year.

“Now we know where we’re going and we know how tough the Premier League is.

“At this moment we can’t say we’re going to finish in the top 10, or we’re going to finish at the bottom. We have to give our best and then we can talk about it in December or January. It’s too soon to talk about our target.

“Hull had experience of the Premier League when I arrived there and that just goes to show how tough this league is.

“You can’t have fixed expectations. They always change.

“So we must just give our best possible.”
