Cyrille Regis wants an Albion leader
Tuesday 29th June 2010, 10:00AM BST.
Albion legend Cyrille Regis has urged boss Roberto Di Matteo to sign an on-field leader in time for the start of Premier League battle.
The former England international, speaking at the Hawthorns as Barclays presented Albion with their Premier League flag to fly above the stadium, fears the Baggies’ return to the top flight could be hampered by the lack of a commanding presence in their defence, which has also been strengthened by the addition of another international player, Pablo Ibanez of Spain.
But Regis is eager to see Di Matteo add a British backbone to his team by signing a Derek McInnes-type player.
He said: “We need a leader. Looking at the Albion at the back, they need a leader. Nowadays they are very hard to come by – someone who will shout, organise and be the voice out there.
“A Derek McInnes-type? Yes. I’m thinking a John Terry-type character who is not afraid to say so either via his performance or verbally.
“Every team needs a leader out there and I’m not sure Albion’s got one.”
Albion have been linked with a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Marton Fulop and Regis would welcome competition for first-choice Scott Carson.
He added: “Carson needs another goalkeeper just to put him under that little bit more pressure, the back four needs strengthening.”
