Baggies face £1m price tag for Marton Fulop
Monday 28th June 2010, 11:29AM BST.
Albion will have to fork out around £1m if they decide to push ahead with interest in Sunderland’s transfer-seeking keeper Marton Fulop.
Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo confirmed earlier in the summer that an understudy and challenger for Scott Carson’s position in his newly-promoted team was one of the close-season transfer priorities.
Fulop is available although his interest in coming to The Hawthorns will be strongly influenced by his prospects of a starting role.
The Hungarian has been told by his national coach that he needs regular first- team football to play for his country in the Euro Championship qualifiers.
The arrival of Simon Mignolet as Craig Gordon’s understudy signals the beginning of the end of the 27-year-old’s time on Wearside.
Fulop, who finished last season on loan at Manchester City, already has interest lodged from Anderlecht and Olympiakos. But he is on contract for another two years at Sunderland.
Albion are bringing in 17-year-old Swedish keeper Filip Joensson for a one-week trial from Landskrona BoIS. The opportunity has been set up by Jonas Olsson, the Baggies’ Swedish defender.
Latest Blog — Same again for West Brom
What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.

Like any body who comes in has to understand it is competition for their place. Pity the England team don’t see it that way.

Starting to get worried now, this one isnt right for us apart from keeping the bench warm.
Not enough business being done. Down the road we see that Wolves have been busy adding to what is already a capable team, Blues likewise.
Make no bones about it this is going to very different from our season in the ‘Chumpionship’
What we do now will make our season. Get some bodies in and quick

Would you rather we panic buy, or buy the right players to help us stay up?
The World Cup isn’t even finished yet (apparently) and it’s still 5 – 6 weeks until the new season starts, so we still have plenty of time to buy the right players, instead of just buying players for the sake of it.
This is a very important Summer of business, both in and out for us, so we MUST get it right.

He is better keeper than Carson, if Carson starts in goal you watch balls get flown into box time after time beccause they know that he flaps too much.
I would like to see us to go to Cardiff and get Whittingham, Ledley and Chopra, bring in James Beattie, Fulop, Ban Watson and Callum Davenport

I can’t see Fulop thinking that moving from Sunderland’s bench to our bench is a great career move ? No one is guaranteed a place so I reckon we either need a keeper that can replace Carson or a younger lad who is happy to be on the bench and play a few cup games a season for the next few years.

Sooner wait and get the right people in rather than rush in and get c++p.I’m sure RDM won’t let the grass grow under his feet once he gets the go ahead from the bloke who holds the purse stringe.Thats the problem, but from what Peace said,he’s ready to loosen the cash flow for wages to get right players in.So have faith and lets wait and see, don’t get TO impatient,we’ll be right.

Spot on lads. There’s some seriously impatient and short-sighted people on here. It’s the World Cup and player holiday/agent season, nothing’s gonna get done until that’s over.
I don’t like using them there Wulfs as a positive example, but in June last year, their pages were awash with people spitting feathers about a lack of signings. Yet come the start of the season, they’d signed half a dozen players to supplement the undoubted quality of Elokobi, Stearman and Vokes.
Give it some time.

Any chance we can swap Valero for Michael Bradley who’s currently playing for Borussia Monchengladbach. He’s only 23 and looked good in the world cup; being American he also speaks English as his first language. A centre midfield three of him, Dorrans and Jara/Mulumbu would be dynamite in my opinion.

Do people really think that the club arn’t working on things ??? The sponsor deal came out the blue and thats the way JP and the club like to work.
Wolves are happy to let the press know all their activities and their fans may like it – but I prefer to read about it once its done !!
Don’t forget we have signed Tamas & Reid on permanent deals PLUS signed Ibanez… all good quality signings. Everyone at the club knows we need a new striker or 2 – but real quality players take longer to sort out than bargain basement deals.
Keep the faith !!!!
p.s – why are people saying we should sell carson ?? He will be in the England set up for the next ten years !!

8) Shows your lack of football knowledge! Vokes is a young Welsh international and will get better. Stearman an English Under 21 and from the same club as Mattock but better. Elokobi is raw but if he sorts his distribution out, he will improve.
You need to look at some of your players eg Luke Moore.

Good price, good age for an experienced goalkeeper
and if he thinks he’s better than Scott he’ll come
in, if not he wont, so we win either way and move on. Panic fans queue on the left for your “Panic

10. Oh dear. I think the statement about Scott Carson being in the England squad is worse then Terrys prediction of a top 4 finish. Lets just finish 17th we will all be happy.

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse for England, someone then mentions that Carson will be playing for them for the next 10 years!!!!

Before the World Cup you were telling us that international status meant nothing!!

I’m 100% with Happy. Name me half a dozen better English goalkeepers. It seems to be the fashinable thing to slate Carson, I can’t think of many goalkeepers that made less blunders than he last season (everybody makes them, Green made more than any) and he earned us a stack of points with saves we all seem to expect rather than praise.
At 24, he’s a baby in goalkeeping terms and will get better if we support him.
13. No we won’t ‘all be happy’. The players get more cash, the club’s turnover increases, (although their profit may go down), we pay more for fewer games and you may be happy with 17th, but I won’t! I may have to tolerate it if that’s all we can get. Don’t tell me the Prem wants us or needs us either. As long as Chelsea, Man.U., Liverpool and Arsenal are OK, (see contrived fixture list accidentally not chosen by a computer), the FA couldn’t give a damn. They’ll be too busy worrying about goals that were not and managers’ pay-offs that could bring their credibility to run things into question.
It’ll be, West Bromwich who? Oh them. There’s another small club nearby isn’t there? Foxes? no, that’s Leicester Fosse, er, Wulf hounds?
You know, just north of Watford. Gets up, trips over trailing beard, falls flat on face. Meeting continues….

I must say I do have faith in the club and more than sure that they are spending all their time to source the right players for our squad. But on the knowledge we have I am worried and concerned at this point in time. Thats not to say that come the start of the season I will be more than happy with our team – At this time though im worried looking at Wolves’s team compared to ours.
I think Fulop would be a great signing for us and especially at 1m.
On another note why on earth are we not linked with Boyd. All I can hope for is that we are looking at him and serious about him so keeping it quiet. Just look at his stats. Ive read he commands a 1mill signing on fee and 30k a week wages. This is expensive for us but he would be a great signing on a free for us. SIGN HIM UP!!

Happy baggie, put me down for 100% of that prediction as well,Blue n White and Smethwick support him don’t knock him.

Lay off Scot Carson, just think, when he’s as old as Marton Fulop and his skin is a little thicker
what a good keeper he will be. If you have been watching the world cup there have been worse clangers than Scots clanger was. We’ve all made mistakes whilst at work, were we dumped out on our ear or were we given another chance?. Just a thought.

15. Easy. Scott done ok at Championship leve, lets not forget 2-3 blunders and this was the weakest ever championship. We need a more experienced, more reliable keeper.
David James (Pompey)
Robert Green (West ham)
Joe Hart (Man City)
Paul Robinson (Blackburn)
Ben Foster (Blues)
Scott Loach (Watford -under 21s)
Ross Turnball (Chelsea)

17. Agreed, we need quality signings A.S.A.P as pre season training starts very soon and we need them to settle into the squad. I’d like to see Jaeremy Peace give it a real go to keep us up.
16. So if we survive on the last day you wont be happy? I’d be absolutely over the moon. We were along way off Newcastle last season in terms of quality and I think even they need to strengthen to stay up. Individually I prefer our players to Bolton or Blackburn etc but they are established premier league players and teams and we are not. We need experienced Prmeier league players in there and this costs money. If JP thinks he can do this on the cheap I would be happy to finish above anyone this time.

21.Premier. You’ll be happy scratching around the nether regions of the Greed League. Your prerogative mate, but me, I like to see football between roughly equal teams, the better team winning on the day. Changes are needed and the Prem is the place to start. Every club to balance their books, a cap on salaries, goal-line technology, the FA answerable to the public for their spending.
Addressing these problems wouldn’t make it a level playing field, but it has to start somewhere. Oh, I also don’t think we were way off Newcastle for QUALITY. We outplayed them each time we met and thrashed them once. If you had said CONSISTENCY, then I would have had to agree.

Premier Baggie
It’s funny you should mention Ross Turnbull, I work next to a Middlesbrough fan who tells me Turnbull is calamity-prone and not that good. How will any of us know different if he’s bench-warming all season?
Ben Foster has been nudged out of Manchester United as he made several mistakes last season, we’ll see how good he is this year. Robert Green made more mistakes last season that led to goals than any other Premiership player.
You say yourself that Carson made 2-3 blunders in the 40-odd games he played. What seriously are you expecting from a keeper? Even the likes of Seaman made the odd mistake. What about the countless wonderful saves he’s made?
Get off the lad’s back, he’ll become a very good goalkeeper in time.

21-’Premier Baggie’-for someone called Premier you are very negative, you sound like a disguised dingle. As for Newcastle having much more quality than us,we played them 3 times, won 1,drew 2,and totally outplayed them. The new season is still a long way off,a couple of signings and everybody will be happy. We still have more than enough quality to whup the dark side.

I have to admit I dont like people slating any of our players but I am not Carsons biggest fan. I would like to see a better Goalkeeper as our no.1, I like Fulop and hopefully we can get him. We need a first choice right and left back, Left mifield (Brunt too slow) and 2 strikers Piquionne and Beattie would be great additions. We need these areas addressing or we will not stay up in the division.
Warren, I agree with your post 95% but in my view, Scott Carson is already a very good goalkeeper and will become an excellent one. Nobody calls David James ‘Calamity’ anymore but at 40 he’s as good as done. A year’s contract on his salary could be used to buy us a good back-up goalkeeper.
26. I thought ‘spies’ too but let it go.
28. Smithy. I’ve always liked Milner for his ability to cross a ball, but if he’s worth £30million as a right winger then Brunt as a much scarcer left winger is worth more than a few bob. Accurate centres are worth a fortune. Brunt is brilliant at it. Blimey, Beckham became a multi-millionaire because he could drop a ball on a tanner! Oh, and Brunt can head a ball too.

Absolutely Cyril.
One final slant on the Carson debate:
I think we all widely acknowledge David James to be England’s number one keeper. Post 20 suggests he’s better than Carson at the moment…probably correct.
But at 24 years-old, David James was uncapped and whilst showing undoubted talent, was making the occasional high-profile mistake for Liverpool which he was crucified for.
He went on to win 50-odd caps and become the best goalkeeper of his generation.
Scott Carson’s already been capped at 24, and is clearly a talented goalkeeper. We’d be crazy to force him out the club with constant criticism. Give him time and let him grow, and as Cyril says, we’ll have some player.
28 and 29-I’ve had a go at Brunt in the past for being inconsistent, but on the plus side he scores goals, and on form his left foot is as good as Beckham’s,some of his crosses would be a dream for quality strikers. It makes you laugh,if Albion have players with natural ability, the national media will either ignore him,or link him with a ‘fashionable’ top club. After all,how could someone talented be with ‘little ole West Bromwich’ who are in that Victorian black country surrounded by coal mines and chain makers? How quaint…

CantelloR78….you forgot ‘somewhere north of Watford aren’t they?’ Ooh, and foundries! Sufficient reason for never hating Wolves, Villa, Blues, (or even Stoke, my God what have I said?). Our forefathers knew what graft was. They died from it, EARNING their cash. Another pet hate of mine is when they print, “Lampard earns £5million a year”. He bloody well doesn’t, he GETS £5 million a year. Substitute any name you want from the England squad. Have you seen the refuse collectors running to clear the bins? THAT’S EARNING.
