Wolves fed up of Kevin Doyle talk
Thursday 24th June 2010, 10:30AM BST.
Wolves owner Steve Morgan is fed up of saying £6.5million striker Kevin Doyle is not for sale.
Rumour mongers among the Molineux masses feared new £7m record signing Steven Fletcher would be eventually Doyle’s replacemen,t if interest from Arsenal or any other big club intensifies in the Republic of Ireland international.
But Morgan stressed the sale of last season’s nine-goal top scorer was the furthest thing from Wolves’ mind.
On the contrary, Morgan admits Doyle now needs a partner in goals and hinted at boss Mick McCarthy returning to two up front next season.
The multi-millionaire also stressed new £3million winger Stephen Hunt was bought specifically with Doyle in mind, as the pair prepare to be reunited for the first time at club level since their Reading days.
Morgan said: “I don’t even know if Doyle’s sale iis an issue – I’m almost reluctant to answer the question because how many more times do I need to say it? He’s not for sale. You can print that if you like.
“We need a squad of strikers and it’s absolute rubbish to say that because we bought Steven Fletcher in, Kevin Doyle will go. We’re not remotely considering letting Kevin go.
“Kevin said himself he loves the club, and part of the attraction of Stephen Hunt coming here as well was to play with Kevin. Selling him is the last thing we’re going to do. It’s kind of not an issue.
“We’ve bought one of his best pals here in Hunt. If you listen to Stephen and Kevin talking, they can’t wait to get on the pitch together.
“They might struggle to be understood, but they understand each other.”
Morgan believes a return to playing two up front is a serious consideration, with a £13.5million strikeforce.
He said: “Do you know what? We can’t manage with one striker. The days of Steve Bull almost single-handedly getting the club up are long gone.
“Andy Mutch did his bit as well and no disrespect to him of course, but Steve put the ball in the back of the net all the time.
“You can’t have just one striker.”
