Former Villa captain Gareth Barry will start for England in their second World Cup Group C game against Algeria in Cape Town on Friday.

The Manchester City star missed the 1-1 draw with the United States, because of an ankle injury suffered with his club in early May.

But Barry has been training with the squad and is likely to be asked by coach Fabio Capello to anchor the midfield against the north Africans.

Capello said: “Gareth Barry will play this Friday. He’s training very well, and has no problems. He’s fit.”

Barry’s return gives Capello the option of moving captain Steven Gerrard to the left side of midfield, or playing the skipper behind Wayne Rooney in a 4-4-1-1 system.
