Saddlers told to stay in shape
Monday 31st May 2010, 11:27AM BST.
Chris Hutchings today warned his Walsall squad against piling on the pounds as they cannot afford to return to training overweight.
The Saddlers are now on a break until July 1 after completing maintenance sessions last week as Hutchings bids to keep them in shape.
And the boss says that while they deserve their holiday, his men must not over-indulge.
“We’ve got to give them the time they need off but they need to make sure they don’t come back too heavy,” Hutchings said.
“Before we come back for pre-season, they’ll be expected to do some maintenance runs.”
But Hutchings says he has been pleased with his squad’s efforts especially as some, including skipper Mark Hughes and winger Julian Gray, are still weighing up their options after being offered new contracts.
He said: “It shows their commitment, they are professional. If they do decide to go somewhere else that’s their prerogative but they are giving themselves the best chance to go somewhere else if that’s the case.
“We want them to stay and that’s what we’re hoping for. They’ve been excellent, we’ve had the young lads training with us as well.
“It gives the younger ones more confidence to feel part of the football club and work with the older players.”
