Troy Deeney rubbishes Blues rumours

Walsall striker Troy Deeney has rubbished rumours linking him with Birmingham and will ignore any summer speculation over his future.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a move to Blues, after plundering 14-goals last term which saw him crowed the club’s Player of the Season.

Reports suggested St Andrew’s chief Alex McLeish was lining up a cheeky bid, but Deeney isn’t paying any attention to gossip.

He said: “There’s no interest that I know of. I was in bed when I first heard about it.

“I’ve got a lot of mates on building sites and they were ringing me up at 6.30am saying – ‘are you going to play for Blues?’ I said – ‘I don’t know, I’m in bed and I don’t really care.’

“Once I had woke up and had a little think about it, it’s something that I would love to do because it’s my team, but there’s no truth in it as far as I know.

“I don’t have an agent, so until somebody reckons something to the club then that’s when I’d start worrying about it.”

Deeney insists rumours will not break his focus looking to build on a season which saw him emerge as the Saddlers’ frontline striker.

He said: “There’s always going to be speculation because it’s that time of the season but as long as the club say I’m still here, then I’m still here and I’ll work hard.

“There’s no speculation from me, it’s just papers and other people talking. I wouldn’t have signed a contract if I weren’t happy. I’m the main man now and that’s what I wanted.

“Now I’ve got to prove that I’m the main man again next season.”

Manager Chris Hutchings this week challenged Deeney to become the first Walsall player to score 20 goals since Jorge Leitao a decade ago and doesn’t want to lose his star man.

But the Saddlers are realistic and know they are not in a position to reject reasonable offers for any of their young guns.

Hutchings said: “If a bigger club comes in for them and it’s the right offer for the club and the player then they go with our blessing.

“But at the same time we want to be successful with our players.”

It’s not your choice Deeney, unfortunately. I see an offer of £100,000 grand being put on the table and you’ll be on the first train out of Bescot station.

Number 2, I agree in part, I don’t think he is Premiership quality, and ever will be. And at our level he does spurn a number of chances, but I can see him leaving to go into the Championship. Would want a bit more than £100,000 though, as he is still young at not at his prime..

Deeney will score 20 goals for us next season if he stays and stays clear of injury. In the long term and from a football point of view he would be a lot better off having another season or two in our first team rather than a bigger clubs reserves. But no doubt if Blues or anyone else waft an undisclosed amount of fivers under Bonser’s nose then he will be off.

£100 000? that would be an insult. If he were to go now then i’d take £350 000. If he were to stay and bang in 20 goals next season then his price would at least double.

Its not rocket science WFC, do your best to keep him and it would make good business sense in the long run. Then again, Dann, and Gerrard, now that was fantastic business wasn’t it?

    I fear the worst!

We’ve got more chance of getting in the Champions League than Deeney scoring 20 goals for us next season, all Troy “spinning top” Deeney does is run round the centre circle all game, he’s nothing special, Alex Nicholls had the run in the first team Deeneys had he’d be 10 times the player he is, TAKE NOTE HUTCHINGS!!!

Easily our main man, although not up to Premiership Quality yet; going there wouldnt be the best career move at the minute. Good ambition and loyalty being shown though, just what I’ve come to expect from one of a few that puts in 100% and wants the team to progress.
