Stoke midfielder Liam Lawrence has moved to clear up any confusion about his link to Wolves by insisting there has been no contact from Molineux.

Lawrence signed a four-year deal at the Britannia Stadium last summer, but has fallen down the pecking order and is available for around £1million.

Quotes originating in Ireland from questions asked about linking up with Wolves boss Mick McCarthy have been reported as a “come and get me plea” over here.

But the 28-year-old, who was signed by McCarthy at Sunderland, insists although he would welcome a reunion with his former boss there has been no movement from Wolves.

Lawrence said: “I’d love to play for Mick McCarthy but that’s come out as I’m joining Wolves, which is not the case.

“I was asked if I would like to work with Mick again one day. He was the one who took me from Mansfield to Sunderland and, so, if the chance ever arose, I would.

“But I haven’t spoken to any clubs. In fact, Mick must have read the story and wondered what it was all about.

“I’m aware of interest from clubs and hope I can stay in the Premier League, but I won’t be doing anything without Stoke knowing.

“If Tony is true to his word which he always is, I’m sure there will be no problems with me going on and furthering myself elsewhere.”

The Republic of Ireland international started only 14 games in the season just gone and found himself behind Dean Whitehead and Rory Delap.

Lawrence said: “I don’t want to leave Stoke but, purely for footballing reasons, it’s time to move on. That’s best for both parties.

“The team has done well whether I’ve played or not, so I’m not going to moan and say I should be playing.

“But I’m not a player who’s happy to sit on the bench and just pick my wages up. I’ve agreed with the manager that this is the right thing to do.

“He told me he didn’t want me to go, but he understood where I was coming from.”

Lawrence joined Stoke for £500,000 from Sunderland in January 2007 and played a major role in their promotion to the Premier League the following summer.
