Walsall players return to training

Walsall players have returned to training this week just 17 days after the end of the League One season.

Boss Chris Hutchings has called his men in for maintenance sessions to ensure their fitness levels remain high during the close season.

The Saddlers underwent a similar programme last year and Hutchings has stuck with his plans, insisting it will benefit his squad in the long run.

He said: “It’s mainly about injury prevention. Instead of the players shutting down completely for six weeks, we’ve had them in this week to keep them ticking over.

“They will then go away after this week, but we will expect them to do a couple of runs each week to maintain their fitness levels so that we go into pre-season training with everyone at a decent level.

“This week will be structured whereby the lads are in each morning and we will do some ball work, running, weights and possibly a swimming session.

“We had an enjoyable and productive first day on Monday. I think the lads enjoyed coming in and doing a bit as it helps to break up their holiday and relieve some of the boredom.”

The boss is still waiting on answers from eight of his squad after offering them new deals two weeks ago.

Julian Gray, goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin, Alex Nicholls and captain Mark Hughes are among those considering their options. They have until the end of the month to accept the deals on the table.

Hutchings is likely to play hardball during any contract wrangles, after adopting a no-nonsense approach last year.

For instance, Sofiene Zaaboub’s offer was quickly withdrawn after the winger wanted to go on trial with QPR.

I seem to recall a list of injurys stacking up over the first few months of the season due to the over working through the summer last year. alot of these players are young lads, and their bodies need time to recover
