Stephen Ward signs new Wolves deal
Tuesday 25th May 2010, 10:00AM BST.
Wolves left-back Stephen Ward has signed a two-year extension to his contract to take him to 2013.
Ward, who still has 13 months to run on his existing deal, has been rewarded for his form in his first season in the Premier League.
The versatile 25-year-old played 22 games despite missing chunks of action at the start and end of last season with knee problems, which should be solved after a second operation that kept him out of his senior international debut for the Republic of Ireland for tonight’s friendly against Paraguay and Friday’s clash with Algeria.
Ward is already vying for the left-back spot with George Elokobi, with the impending arrival of £2.5million Jelle van Damme likely to crank up the competition even further.
But the Irishman is delighted to have got a new deal.
He said: “I’m thrilled. To be honest, I was a little bit worried picking up an injury but I was pleased to play a part. To have signed a new deal when we’ve stayed in the Premier League is brilliant for me.
“I’ve grown to love the club, so I’m delighted to be here for another three years. The gaffer’s been great to me here ever since I arrived.
“Hopefully I can do well next season and reward him for his confidence.”
Having arrived from Bohemians for a bargain £100,000 in January 2007, Ward has proved to be one of manager Mick McCarthy’s shrewdest signings.
Wolves’ Mr Versatile has played 120 games, successfully switching from centre forward and left midfield to left-back in September 2008.
McCarthy said: “’Wardy’ is one of the players who had to make a big step-up when he arrived from Bohemians.
“But he’s answered every challenge, including reverting to left back and developing his game so much he looks like he’s spent all his career there.
“He did well for us last season, even more so as when he came back from injury he was often having to train and play through a lot of pain.
“But he’ll do that because of the character he is and the courage he shows.
“Having had his operation, I’m sure he’ll be relishing even more the chance to play in the league again without any niggling problems.”

Hes definately been a good signing for only £100,000, as i feel his value has increased allot since his arrival, and hes done a decent job in the positions hes been asked to play in, but i feel hes not the right answer to our left back problems. Hopefully he will be a good backup in the event of injuries.
That’s amazing news.. We may even win the league!!
Another extended contract for a player who’s not up to it!
I admit i’m not Wardy’s biggest fan purely because he gets caught out so many times at left back, the lad is decent in the tackle but his marking leaves a lot to be desired.
However as he can play left back and on the wing I’m more than happy for him to be cover which I think he will be come August time.
He definately HASN’T been a good signing. He’s no where near good enough.. but hey, I guess we will have to continue to suffer him.
What worries me is that we should be strengthing that department and not looking to renew contracts on players that are not good enough.
I suppose you coiuld say he’s a squad player, but the problem is, I’ll dread it when he’s drafted in.
He’s had some decent games this season to be fair. Well played Wardy
Report abuse
Get ready !
This story is bound to bring the loonies out.
Well done Wardy you are a very useful member of the team.
leave the lad alone he’s a good squad player and puts in 110% for us, he says himself he’s grown to love the club top man in my opinion. despite his mistakes he put in some cracking performances last year. he isn’t the answer for a permanent left back, left midfielder nor striker i know. however, a handy squad player he is because of covering various positions when injuries undoubtly happen.
Fair play! He deserves it! But we have a lot of full backs now! Maybe a striker would be a good idea!?
30 minutes in and no comment from Bob Wolf,he must be on his hols. The key to our success has been team spirit and this is a just reward for the part played to date by Stephen Ward.He did well before his injury; apart from Liverpool away. Also for an ex striker I have never known another player so lacking in confidence to shoot.
Is this a positive for the club?
Is S.W premier quality or should we be looking to invest in an experienced premier left back or would this compromise the “wage structure”?
I agree for £100k he was cheap but maybe this contract is a means to securing better value for money if we sell him?
Well done wardy. Proud 2 pull ya shirt on and play for the club. Gives 100% every game and a useful addition. Much better than elokobi.
good squad player, utw

Where is the quality Moxey promised us,Gary Hooper from Scunny, yer having a laugh.
richwolf64 – Hes been a good signing. Played a part in our promotion as well as playing a part in our survival. We bought him as a championship player and has worked his socks off to do it in the prem, and although he has had some bad games, he has had a few decent games and will be a good backup to a more consitent left back.
If his cross for Blakes goal (which is the goal theat kept us in the league) was the only contribution he made for us since we bought him, id be happy. £100,000 for the cross that secures promotion and a hefty financial windfall for another season in the prem doesnt sound bad to me.
well done wardy fully deserved in my opinion considering he was a striker hes done a pretty good job in my book.
Chris Hoggard – Spot on. The key has been team work. Wardy may or may not be up to it, but it sends a message to the other players about the types of basic attributes that will get rewarded.
Bob Wolf hasn’t commented because he banged on an on and on for about 2 years re the infamous Collins extension, and still didn’t have the grace to admit he was wrong (again) as we ended up getting a good fee for him.
I hope we do bring in a stronger left back option, and if Wardy does slip down the pecking order then there’ll be a host of championship clubs willing to pay a dam site more than what we shelled out for him.
Wardy is a good squad player, who can come on in case our first choice left back, midfield are injured or not performing. At 100k he is a valueable asset to the team- Well done buddy.
There’s a fine line between ‘versatile’ and “not good enough at CF, so try him at LW…not good enough at LW, so try him at LB…not good enough at LB, so try him at ????”
I SUPPOSE THIS IS ONE OF OUR TOP TARGETS SECURED THEN LOL.
JANUARY ALL OVER AGAIN… THE ONLY SIGNINGS WE’LL MAKE WILL BE OF A HALFORD AND SURMAN QUALITY RATING. MORE SQUAD PLAYERS WHO’LL MAKE LITTLE OR NO DIFFERENCE TO WHAT WE HAVE NOW.
MY PREDICTION FOR NEXT SEASON … RELEGATION CERTANTIES..NO DANGER PUT YOUR HOUSE ON IT.
SAD..BUT TRUE!!!!!!
Never been a fan of Steve Ward. Hard work and graft can only get you so far. I don’t think he has the bottle to go into full bloodied tackles. His passing, marking and reading of the game is poor for a defender. Maybe, a bit more joy as left wing?
Signing a new contract means nothing! he’s a decent player and worth a place in the squad but neil collins signed a 4 year deal and was then moved on 6 months later!
Sometimes its to protect a clubs investment-he must be worth 1-2 million now?? with only 13 months left on his contract he would be free to talk to other clubs in 7 months!!
some of u lot are very dim….and boring…
Report abuse
Agree with much of the above, he has a big heart and always tries, but he is not the answer to our left back probem (nor left side of midfield) and is a squad player at best.
Stephen Ward, Michael Kightly, Kevin Foley, Dave Edwards, George Elokobi, Matt Jarvis, Karl Henry, Andy Keogh are all players that cost less than a million and are young and are all worth more money than we bought them for. Most are full internationals and will get better and better.
If these players get picked they should be supported and not slagged off. If you are not happy with the fact that we stayed up comfortably on a smallish transfer outlay, you do not have to come and watch. Your support would not be missed!
This a good bit of business by the Club.
By extending his contract, we have just guaranteed a reasonable price tag if we let him go and also made certain that we’ve got cover for the left back position.
Whether you like the player or not, he’s not the worst left back in the prem and I’d bet that a number of championship sides would be happy to take him off our hands for decent money as he is rather versatile.
Well done Wolves.
We now have the two worst left backs in the PL tied into long term contracts. We need a REAL solid left back, what is the problem with Shorey? Available at the right price with loads of experience. Ward is simply not good enough at this level, everyone knows it.
20. You absolutely sum up the moronic section of Wolves fans that will never ever be happy. Even if the team were to go on to win the premier league and then the champions league you would still be moaning about how we’re not good enough to win the world club cup! Well done to Mick and the present team for rising above idiots like you and bringing some joy to the sane Wolves fans among us that have enjoyed the last two seasons and look forward to next season whoever we do or don’t sign or re-sign.
His effort and commitment cannot be questioned, he deserves his new contract on that alone. He just isn’t quite good enough at any one position. Saying that he is a good squad player. Well done Wardy. UTW.
The whinging and moaning on here is both pathetic and ignorant.
Last season we were promoted as Champions and people were criticising MM, Moxey and the certain players.
This season when we comfortably avoided relegation which is a good achievement for a promoted side we saw the same moaning and abuse.
Do the gormless morons (Southbank barmy army, richwolf, bobwolf etc) not understand the concept of progress.
The 3 M’s have done an amazing job in the past 3 years – look at where we have come from to where are now. We are not going to win the Prem next season!!
Toys are being thrown out of prams because we haven’t signed 5 new players and spent £50 million. How many transfers have taken place since the end of the season in total – not many! We don’t do business through the press either – realise that you don’t know whats going on behind the scenes….
Maybe just maybe making steady progress is better than splashing out millions we haven’t got and ending up like Portsmouth and Hull.
The stupidity displayed on this board is staggering!
so 20.sbba , you really believe wwfc will get relegated? and if so have you put money on at the bookies? or hav’nt you got the conviction of your statement?.
oh i forgot, you lost a fortune last season as we stayed up, i bet you were fuming lol
Report abuse
A good reward for a good squad player. Wardy always gives 100%. However, he is not a Premiership left back and Wolves must sign a quality left back to ensure we improve on next season.
‘Ward… has been rewarded for his form in his first season in the Premier League.’
That sentence sums Mick up. Clueless.
I can ‘put a shift in’ like Ward/Keogh/Collins/Henry but it does not mean I can play football.
Cost us countless games, needed Jarvis to help him mark anyone with pace (most wingers at this level!!) and was eventually dropped. Sounds like brilliant form!!!
Simply Mr Consistant.
Not spectacular but never lets you down.
Collins take two, not good enough and clearly we are showing no ambition.
Happy clappers are deluded
Report abuse
I admire Ward’s efforts but must admit that he isn’t good enough to feature in a Premier League team. This is a league where giving your all can mean nothing, if you don’t have the skills to go with it. People applauding this piece of business want to take a moment to think. These kind of decisions seem to indicate relegation battles are all we seem to be aspiring for. We need to stop giving the likes of Ward, Keogh and Elokobi the sympathy vote because of the effort they put in and accept there not good enough to take our club forward.
@ 26 You’re being a bit harsh on Big George there. I was there at Upton Park and he was one of our many men of that match. He might not be the most skilful of wing-backs (as you may have noticed) but he is built like a brick chodhouse and wingers have a satisfying amount of difficulty getting around him. AND he’s improving all the time.
That said, I reckon we should go for Fabio Aurelio, so what do I know?
This Wardy deal is neither here nor there really, it feathers our nest a bit when we sell him on, which we will. But I don’t think it’s time to be fretting because we haven’t brought anyone in yet bar Van Damme. Quite frankly, it heartens me that the players we have been linked with have come to nothing – Dindane is a Willie McKay boy, which means he’s not to be trusted; I’m not convinced that Fletcher would give us anything; Liam Lawrence is a Stoke also-ran and not the level of player we should be aiming at; and Hunt seems painfully over-rated to me.
Get Peter Whittingham in. See what the World Cup throws up – perhaps Milijas might play better with a fellow Serb to eat dumplings with, or whatever they do in Serbia? But don’t panic.
Really just tying the loose ends up.Cant let him go into a new season with only a year left.Good business sense really, does’nt matter which player it is,you need them under contract.Thats why we need to get down to Cardiff and get Ledley who is not under contract in a month and is a ‘Quality’ signing.Oh yes and by the way,Ward has worked hard but hard graft will only get you so far.Probably cover for the whole left flank for the upcoming season.Up the Wolves.
so 20.sbba , you really believe wwfc will get relegated? …
YES I DO! I’VE SAID IT TODAY..AND WILL CONTINUE TO SAY IT THROUGHOUT NEXT SEASON.
DON’T BE FOOLED BY OUR OUR LUCKY SURVIVAL LAST TIME, THIS SEASON WILL BE VERY DIFFERENT, AND WE WON’T BE SO LUCKY THIS TIME.
AND NO AMOUNT OF MORONIC HAPPY CLAPPING WILL CHANGE THE FACT … WE WILL BE RELEGATED.
I see the critics are out-Well done Wardie I think you have improved you game fitness and gained valuable experience-You can only go on to improve greatly in time–
A valuable assett to the SQUAD. I agree with the contract given….Put that where it hurts cynics amoungst us.. Crazey Dave
Report abuse
In that case SBBA, simple, go and support someone you think will do better and allow REAL wolves fans to celebrate the progress we have made.
Sling your hook son, you hang round here like a bad smell
Report abuse
Ward to be fair puts a shift in but in my opinion is defintely not true premiership quality. Still think we should go after Shorey but I can’t see that happening now. Still very concerned at this stage that we aren’t, despite promises YET AGAIN that we would be targeting quality.
So the trend continues. Stupid long contracts given to Mick’s little son’s. first Collins and now we have Ward.
Next we’ll have Keogh signed up for 5 years. I’ll put my house on it.
34 – Did you see the fee we got for Collins ? It was pretty darn good. If this works out the same way then it will be good business. Why the reactive attitude ?
wolvesmod – “Mick’s little sons”
Pathetic playground level comment.
By the way – we sold Collins, did you not notice?
Magnificent comments from 27 and 29 above. People who value the absolute effort and commitment from the team last season. Don’t forget we stayed up by 8 POINTS – that is a great achievemnet and is 5 more points than we got in 2004 when supposedly staffed with more ‘gifted’players who cost more and no doubt earned more. I was delighted by the progress shown by the players last season and expect that progression to continue with the addition of a few more signings in the summer. People should trust the 3 M’s for bringing us so far on our jouney since the ‘Twaddle’ era and I expect them to continue their careful stewardship in to the coming seasons. Well done Stephen Ward. Fully deserved. WWFC forever.
42) Wolvesmod You and your mate Bob Woof haven’t got a football brain between you. The club are protecting their assets. Why would any club allow their contracted players to move on for free when they become Bosmans ?
As others on this thread have pointed out Collins was a good example. Secured with a contract extention then sold to Preston for a very nice fee.
You both come on this site with embarrassing and negative drivel. Sort yourselves out it’s people like you who have the Tescos laughing at us.
And South Bank Barmy Army. Just because you shout it doesn’t make you right. take your caps lock off FFS
Report abuse
MattWolf and Alex Rae’s Butler – all good points but you are wasting your typing strokes.
These people prophesied that Wolves would never get promotion under Mick, prophesied certain relegation this year and can’t stand the fact that they were wrong. They haven’t got the courage, or decency, to admit they were wrong so they’ve got nowhere to go except to keep on banging the same drum so that if Wolves get relegated, anytime in the next twenty years, they can say they told us so!
It’s just a pity E&S can’t set up a separate little forum so that they can agree with each other while everyone else enjoys the progress.

The number of gold tinted spectacles on here is beyond belief.
Not sure what games you were watching last year but wardy cost us numerous times with poor positional sense, poor marking and ball watching.
The reality is this chap was a CENTRE FORWARD!
Admittedly he is an honest lad / tryer and did have a number of good games also. His distribution is generally good and looks comfortable with time.
A good signing for £100k, but unfortunately not premier league quality at left back (possibly cover for jarvis on the wing!?).
I hope this contract has been awarded to generate some cash in the future………
Report abuse
100k for a player who helped us get to and then remain in the promised land…….bargain!!! Won’t say I’m his biggest fan but he has had some solid performances and will only improve as he gets more experience! Adequate cover for my money, well done Wardy!

southbank barmy army- How is stopping up comfortably with 5 teams finnishing below us lucky? 38 points would have achieved us survival in most recent seasons, and if it wasnt for some poor refs decisions we may have finnished on 40+ points.
West ham are talking about selling all there players
Wigan will struggle again next season
I dont think Birmingham will do as well next season
Newcastle may stay up but they will struggle West Brom wont stand a chance playing their attacking football in this league
Blackpool may well get the record for low number of points in a season
Thats 6 teams that could easily finnish below us next season, and yet were certanties for relegation? Get a life.
I’m not Ward’s biggest fan as I think we can do better at left back, but to call him a bad signing is totally ludicrous. When Mick brought him in, the club was only going one way – and it wasn’t up. Due to the attitude of Ward, Keogh, Kightly etc in 2006/7, Wolves defied expectations and effectively returned a real pride amongst the fans that hadn’t been around for a long time.
He was a very good signing and is a very effective squad player – if having Elokobi breathing down his neck sees him play a blinder next season, then the team will only be better for it.
Berate Mick for signings like Shackell and Hill, but not for signing Ward. Anyone who cannot see what he has brought to the club over the last few years has either never been to a game, or is an idiot.
At best he is a championship striker. I think that is his best position, he did well when he first signed being named the championship player of the month at his first month at the club. and was only moved out of that position due to the signings of blake, and keogh and the injuries too Jarvis.
However I do hope now that the club have only extended his contracxt to get a bigger fee for him when they sell him. As I would prefer big george as our backup left back.

The man ward is totaly useless and liable to give a goal away at any time what total rubbish we were told that we were going to buy quallity total crap again.

I just don’t get it. Everybody has a different opinion on just about everything. I never sit in the pub and call my mates idiots or morons because they don’t agree with my point of view.
Mind you, my mates aren’t morons. If I had mates like you, then maybe it would be different :)

I’m a 3M’s fan, most of what they do is good for the club. I may not understand some of their ideas at the time but, hey, I’m not in the Wolves inner circle.
Stephen Ward is a great chap, good for the team, great in the championship, BUT NOT a premiership player, never will be. So why extend his contract until 2013? Mick?
PLUS, whose the c–t in Scunthorpe? Probably Gary Hooper, hope he stays there.
I’ve said it before and here it is again, an unlikely chap named NEMANJA MILIC – OFK Belgrade, he is the future, come on guys, Google him, see what he’s worth!

This is a good news story for the player AND the club – well done Wardy and MM. I basically agree with 25 that this is a good bit of business done as I think that we will sell and make a profit on him in a season or so.
I honestly think we will stay up next season and this is all part of a clever plan to then really bring in some top quality players when we have bigger funds – its just the club ain’t going mad on spending mega bucks just yet.
We will also get some decent new players in over the next few months and those that have no faith in those in charge will soon understand.

He needs to improve the defensive side of his game, but that will come, his improvement since he been at the club, has been superb.
His presence in the team coincides with the most sucessful period in the clubs recent history, he should be applauded not mocked!!!

I must admit that I didnt personally feel that Stephen Ward is a capable left wing back but when he played against Forest the season we were promoted I felt that Ward played really well in that position albeit he was playing a ‘make shift’ role
For £100k he has been a bargain but all the comments being made to criticise this lad are very unfair as he can only do his best and maybe he needs better quality coaching to do his role more effectively?
Its fairly obvious that the club are extending his contract to a) reward the player and b) protect our investment who must be worth as someone else has said between £1m to £2m
Our ‘young and hungry’ squad imv need Prem quality to help them develope as players and to help the team get better results
A ‘Dennis Irwin’ type would be imv just the sort of player to help bring the best out of our squad – we dont need too many ‘young and hungry’ as we may find that we will slow up the youth players from coming through
We hope for better
Up the Wolves!

Ward looks good going forward, beats players with a fair bit of skill & puts good crosses in. His tackling & timing is good but overall his defending is only average cause his positional play is occassionally weak. Not as bad as those that just don’t like him are making out though.
His versitility is an asset, & I’d value him at 2M, which is fine for a good squad player. However, our starting 11 really needs to have nothing less than 3 to 4M rated players in all positions for us to make progress.
Financially Ward’s been an excellent investment, with a around a 2000% increase in value, & as he’s probably one of the cheaper players to pay, extending his contract is clearly good business.
SBBA, Wolves will stay up with the squad they’ve already got!

I don’t think Wardy will be first choice, as has been said he will used as a back up, on a different note it seems our rivals Brum are getting stuck in as far as transfers are concerned, and quality players at that, we on the other hand have no confirmed newcomers yet, and a few of the names we have in the hat are from either the Scot’s or lower divisions, is this the market that Wolves should be looking at for the quality signings we again have been promised, i would hope some of the names being mentioned are just a smoke screen to cover their true targets, and no im not expecting 10 million plus players, just players of the same quality as Mr Doyle, not too much to ask surely.
