Jamie Cureton open to Walsall move
Tuesday 25th May 2010, 9:55AM BST.
Free agent Jamie Cureton has put Walsall on red alert after declaring his interest in a move to Walsall.
The veteran striker has been offered to the club after being released by League One champions Norwich and is keen on a switch to the Banks’s Stadium.
Boss Chris Hutchings is looking to add more experience to his youthful squad and Cureton could fit the bill.
The 34-year-old reckons a move to the Saddlers would be ideal and would relish the chance to talk to the manager.
He said: “I’d be interested, definitely. They are a good club and I’ve always enjoyed playing there. It’s the area I want to get to, because it’s close to Bristol and my family are there.
“It appeals me and I’m waiting for the phone to ring.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing there, they play a good brand of football and I know Darren Byfield as well.”
The forward would have to take a cut from his reported £5,000-a week wages at Norwich but his stock has fallen after two barren years in Norfolk.
Cureton was loaned out to League Two Shrewsbury at the end of last season, before being ditched by Canaries boss Paul Lambert.
The former England youth international voiced his disappointment while being left on the Carrow Road sidelines but, after scoring 204 career goals and listing Bristol Rovers, Swindon and QPR among his former clubs, is determined to prove his doubters wrong.
He said: “Your reputation takes a knock when things don’t go well, so I want to show people they have made a mistake.
“I know what I can do, I still feel I can perform at a high level for a few more years but I’ve had a nightmare couple of years at Norwich.
“The first season was good, I was playing and I was top scorer but then in the last two seasons I had four managers and chopped and changed. It’s been very up and down.
“But I haven’t stopped training and I’m looking for a really big season next year.”

SIGN HIM UP!
He know’s where the net is, and has a brain, so even if his pace has gone a little, he’ll play either Deeney or Byfield in.
This should be a done deal in 24 hours.

You would think he would tout his name at Bristol Rovers, Swindon, Yeovil and Exter before coming to us. Maybe we are his 5th choice
Not worth making him our highest earner, because thats what we will have to do considering his 15k a week at Norwich.

Wherever he’s played he’s scored goals … usually against us. Sign him up just to stop him!

Hmmm… I don’t think he scored a goal in about 10 games for the Shrews in League 2 this season. Not sure that’s a good sign for player we want to score goals in League 1.

He may have scored a load against us, but has he ever been on the winning side against us when he has scored?

Jason, just because its League 2 doesn’t mean sackful of goals. The football quality around such a striker is bound to be poor.
He’s always scored goals wherever he’s gone, so why not. Oh, Kev, its £5k a week.

Good addition if the wages are right.
Still need some creativity from midfield?

Hawkins,
Just pointing out a stat that doesn’t fill me with confidence. The last striker we pulled up from League 2 was Sam Parkin…
That being said, if we look at him and he can do a job, I’m not against the bloke.

Please remember that you are only Walsall

Oh dear Sean is there not enough talk going on your own News???????
We are only little Walsall but we support our team so dont be so rude to come on our site. Keep liveing in Walsall and supporting Wolves i take it you do as you are looking at our news.
Anyway idiot talk out the way I think this would be a good signing for us he does have a proven goal scoreing record and will out to prove a point after a couple of bad years on the sidelines.

I’ve always rated Jamie Cureton – he always scores against us and so it would be nice if he could score for us for a change. My only issues are: 1. His wages – £5k per week is too much for us (our level is more like £1.5k) and 2. Is he not a bit similar to Byfield? We probably need a bigger, target man type of striker as we already have Byfield, Nicholls and Grigg who are smallish and quick. Anyway, it’s a bit early for us to sign anyone – we normally wait until July!

we don’t need him.
Byfield, Deeney, Nicholls and Grigg to select from next season.
We need to sort out a ‘Keeper, Left Back, Midfielder, Left Winger (unless Gray signs) and Right Winger.
