Wolves set for pre-season Ireland tour
Monday 24th May 2010, 9:19AM BST.
Wolves have announced plans to go to Ireland for a pre-season training camp including a friendly against Bohemians and a game in Belgium against Charleroi.
Boss Mick McCarthy and his squad return for pre-season training on June 28 and will fly to Ireland for a Dublin-based training camp from July 14-17.
The friendly with Bohemians takes place on Saturday July 17 at 3pm, before the squad return home to face Walsall on Tuesday July 20.
Wolves, who travel to Belgium to play Charleroi on Saturday July 24, spent almost two weeks in Australia last summer but have decided to stay closer to home this time.
McCarthy said: “I’ve taken clubs to Ireland on several occasions as a manager, most recently with Wolves three years ago, and know exactly what we’ll get with the facilities and fixtures which are always competitive.
“That last trip with Wolves was extremely successful – we’re always well looked after but more importantly the training and matches offer just what we need at that stage of pre-season.
“The other big advantage is it’s reasonably close to home in the event of us needing to speak to any potential transfer targets., and is also fairly accessible for supporters who I know often like to follow the team during pre-season.
“I’m sure the fact we’ve got a few Irish lads in our squad, including ‘Wardy’ who used to play for Bohemians, will add to the interest.
“We’re all looking forward to the trip which, along with all the other fixtures, should give us a really competitive build-up to the season.”
Although Stephen Ward is unlikely to be fit to feature against his former club after his recent knee operation, the Irishman is expected to be involved in some form of training by that stage and should travel.
Wolves also play Reading on Tuesday July 27 at 8pm followed by a trip to Leeds on Saturday July 31 at 3pm.
McCarthy’s men then face Hearts on Tuesday August 3 at 7pm, followed by the final friendly at home to foreign opposition on Saturday August 7, a week before the season starts.
Wolves’ development squad will also have a short tour to Northern Ireland, featuring a benefit match for former academy goalkeeper Daniel Wright with Glenavon on Saturday July 17 at 3pm.
