Wolves’ David Jones: We can match Albion and Newcastle
Saturday 22nd May 2010, 11:30AM BST.
David Jones believes Wolves can hold their own in the battle for signings this summer despite the pull of Albion and Newcastle.
Wolves are shopping in the same markets as the two promoted teams from the Championship which will become three after today’s play-off final between Blackpool and Cardiff.
The return of the Magpies and the Baggies presents more competition to Wolves, who at least have the advantage of having stayed up.
But midfielder Jones reckons Wolves have their own pull to attract the right players.
“Newcastle are a big club and they will have a lot of pull and people will want to go there and West Brom have experience of the Premier League in recent years,” said Jones.
“But players will find Wolves an attractive place to come too because historically, we’re a big club and we’ve got some good players here as well.
“With us surviving and the fact the manager is a big character will also attract players to this club.
“So I’m sure that any players we’ve targeted would love to come here.”
Wolves have already competed with Bolton and Blackburn for Artuna Dindane and Jones reckons they can compete with more established Premier League clubs for signings.
“I think we can although we can’t afford to get carried away,” he said.
“The teams that have already been promoted are very good sides so it’s going to be a very difficult season again.
“But we believe we can build on this season because as last season went on, we gained in confidence and from January-February time, if we can replicate that kind of form throughout the season, I’m sure we’ll be in a more secure position much earlier next season.
“The main aim is survival again but just like all Wolves fans, I’m sure we’d all like to see us build on this season and become an established Premier League team.”
