Wolves and Albion wait on Hull’s Stephen Hunt

Saturday 22nd May 2010, 2:30PM BST.

Stephen Hunt
Stephen Hunt

Wolves and Albion are set to play a waiting game over their pursuit of £3m Hull winger Stephen Hunt.

Such is the perilous financial position of the Tigers that the cash-strapped relegated Premier League club are likely to accept a fee of less than £3m the longer the summer goes on, according to sources.

Hull, who rejected a £5m offer from Wolves for Hunt in January, have not ruled out going into administration.

And the club still owe Reading £2.75m of the £3.5m fee that took him to the KC Stadium last summer.

But they are more keen to get the player’s £35,000 a week salary off their wage bill.

Hunt, who finished as Hull’s six-goal top scorer, is one of the club’s top earners with £45,000 a week Jimmy Bullard and Geovanni, all of which is proving a huge drain on the club’s resources.

The depth of Hull’s plight this week was underlined by their £35m debts which this week prompted an offer to their players to take a 30 per cent pay cut in the form of a deferral.

Combined with the fact Hunt will not be fit until September as he recovers from a foot injury means potential suitors are happy to sit and wait.

Wolves remain Hunt’s preferred choice as he contemplates his future however.

Of the four interested clubs – Everton and Newcastle being the others – the 28-year-old’s preference would be Goodison Park, then Molineux, where he has Kevin Doyle as a close friend and also knows Kevin Foley and Andy Keogh from the Ireland set-up and Marcus Hahnemann from Reading.

But Everton’s interest is only likely to firm up if they sell Steven Pienaar, who is seeking an extension to his contract, which has 14 months to run.

Wolves may also take advantage of Liam Lawrence’s limited opportunities at Stoke, with the 28-year-old right-sided midfielder available for £1m.

The Republic of Ireland international wants to leave the Britannia Stadium and Wolves boss Mick McCarthy knows all about him having signed him for a bargain £175,000 for Sunderland in 2004.

Meanwhile, contrary to reports, Albion have no interest in Portsmouth’s out of contract right-back Steve Finnan.

I hope that we can get him along with the 7-8 players we need with premier league experience. Lets start getting rid of the deadwood who will not make it at this level:

    Meite

    Zuiverloon
    Moore
    Bednar

Walk away from Hunt who has reached and surpassed his ‘use by date’ badly injured and not available to even train until after the commencment of the new season, Wolves would be crazy to consider him, especially on the inflated weekly age he enjoys.

Make an urgent effort for Keane on loan from Spurs, or go for Ambrose of Palace before QPR get him .

DON’T lose out on Hunt to the Albion Moxey because you charmed life will soon lose its charm.
Best thing ever when little Albion (Sadwell Town) got promoted because Moxey can’t afford to lose face to them.
    ps
Mr Moxey when are we going to see these QUALITY signings you mentioned?
I don’t include Hunt or Lawrence in that category, good additions to the squad, but not ”QUALITY”.

Hunt imv is becoming a ‘journeyman’ and has to prove himself and be seen to ‘want’ to play for a club

If Hunt is ‘thinking’ of his options we should make the best offer we can and failing that move on other targets

Whilst it would be great to see a quality player coming in – I dont want a player who’s only ambition is his pay packet (at the same time I’m hoping that Moxey doesnt make a very low offer that doesnt even compete with his other options)

We hope for better (not the same that we already have)

    Up the Wolves!!!

    To repeat a former blog:

Hunt – NO,no,no,no,noooo! No quality, let Baggies have him.

Dindane – NO! Wouldn’t be loyal.
Kitson – NO! Doyle brought him on, but it won’t happen twice.
Boyd – NO! Wouldn’t make it in the Premiership.
Eagles – YES! But is he available?
Fletcher – ??? Hmm, Worth a shot if less than 3mil.
Keane – YES! But he isn’t available, so forget it.

    Who else?

    Here’s a new one.

Seeing as our scouts are looking abroad, how about one of Nenad Milijas’s compatriots.

    NEMANJA MILIC – OFK Belgrade.
    Centre Forward
    1.90metres tall
    19 years old
    Serbian under 21 int:
Already rated by top euro teams, BUT, no offers (published) yet.
Could get him now for less than a mil.
Give him half a season to acclimatize to UK soccer and we have a POSSIBLE world class player.
It’s all a gamble! But I’d go for it.

We really need to take a breath , ignore transfer nonsense-hype, & get some joined up thinking going, re who we sign, and why !!
How is it going to be,morale wise in the squad, if Kightly kept a new signing , say for instance ,Hunt out near enough all season( would that upset Doyle – his best mate /cousin in law !!!) , or if Keogh wanted away as a result of new arrivals blocking his chances( such as Dindane and or Hunt)
Yes we need one striker( and great if they can also play wide) , but losing a young improving hard running Keogh,to prefer an older prima donna, on more money ,who will take time to settle , is badly flawed IMO.
Some will never be convinced of Keogh as a striker, forgetting his good form prior to injury this term , but here I’m thinking on the lines of him just as a wide man,( or forward Midfielder).
He could give us that invaluable undervalued asset that people laud in Doyle( a chaser and harrier , holder of the ball , making our attack the first line of defence by giving the opposition a headache and a rush job of getting the ball out of their half )and having to hoof 50-50 up and under clearances ( like we so sadly did for so much of our games this season just ended).
This also makes a compelling case for getting Mancienne ( paying more( if need be,for him)), rather than fooling about getting pointless wingers in, when we’ve got enough, and good enough cover(Bia as well!!), already!!).

We could even try out Milijas in the middle with the hard grafters, and intelligent distributors around him , giving us a bit more class, and a chance to see if he has a long term future @ Wolves ( he does need to get to the party in terms of strength fitness and stamina , fingers crossed for a big change on that front in pre season ).

Hit the ground running with settled players who have done a job and will only get better , Ward’s selflessness is an excellent example, people criticise his left back abilities, it was honestly, actually, good enough ( he did not cause calamity , whatever the naysayers insist).
I just wonder how good he would be elsewhere in the team ,in one of the positions he was considered to have an aptitude for ,in any event he’s an excellent squad man ,and reassuring to have as a reliable bench sub given his versatility and unrelenting effort , maybe he needs some confidence ie. feeling his team’s supporters support him , strange tactic I know , but some other club’s supporters seem to think they’re onto something with this “supporting our team “thing , taken to mean including all of their players.
Ebanks -Blake will fire again , we’d rue selling him cheap now ,only to find him a sensation for the lucky buyers, whilst we most likely spent well over the odds for no better!!
We need to prune, or not buy midfield DM/CM otherwise ,how can I put, it we would have(without additions)
    Mancienne,Milijas
    Guerdiora Edwards
    Henry,Jones
    Keogh, Ward
leaving aside the matter of Halford and Surman who I cannot find compelling cases for , I would be grateful to break even on their cost in transfer fees if possible .
What Mick saw as special in them is not clear ,butjust maybe others stepped up ( in a way that couldn’t then have been be foreseen), and they are perhaps not that bad , just not better than what we find we have as alternatives already .
Maierhoff ,on loan anywhere please,or we’ll lose a lot selling him in poor form, if a miracle occurs well and good but I’d still much rather someone else enjoy the talents of our” Austrian Crouch” , @ their expense .
Vokes also needs to play regularly, so loan as well, but he is one to keep for sure .Iwelumo, many, many thanks, and all the best , but bye!!
Fletcher seems worth upping the current round of bids for, we need a striker and people think he’s in Doyle’s mould , that’s enough for me, used to Premiership , young enough ,not stupid money(think of the talk about Keane for 10 million) why aren’t we in there!!!
Jelle , most Belgian net comment seems unflattering , hope he’s quick and turns well, we can see he’s a good header , but can he read the game , and tackle ,quick, early and clean . In Mick we trust , if he’s got it right we may even see 3-5-2(just joking ,but hang on.. )
Foley right back( Stearman as cover ) ,
Zubar and Berra middle(Craddock/Stearman and if not playing else where , Jelle as cover),
Jelle left back (Elokobi/Ward as cover)
In goal Usa all the way , or till Murray’s fit ,I would loan Henners out,( especially to help get Fletcher, and cause he will improve the more he plays ) but don’t sell cheap , he’s good, just needs experience .
Ikeme -upto him , good enough to keep but may want away, Murray needs half a season on loan to get upto speed ,so keep Carl @ least till Jan . We are blessed in the keeper department , don’t let’s get silly and lose quality .
The theme across the squad is simple we’ve got some good players , don’t let familiarity breed contempt.
Frankly, next season with Murray ,Kightly,Keogh, Edwards,Ebanks-Blake back & fit , we are much less in need of signings than some posters seem to demand .It’s been said before , but the young hungry cubs , now with added Premiership experience may put a new connotation on the term “second season syndrome ”
This still leaves us with three or four names to offload if need be Hill Surman Halford Maierhoff etc. and still stay within the 25 man limit .
I’d rather Mick took a punt on a few youngsters, overseas players or golden oldies on a free than some of the silly hype stars , and it will get worse as the world cup goes on regarding the silly money and reputations , please large pinches of salt all round please!!
    Here endeth the lesson
    Praise be to Mick !!
Remember ye brethren , in your responses, as the goodly manager has said…
“Opinions are like backsides , everybody’s got one ”
I must stop talking out of mine …
Hallelujah … prrrffffft! oh .. eer, pardon me .

I told you Holloway could make chalk taste like cheese. So it will be a different seaside visit and anyone who thinks ‘six points in the bag’ may have to think again. It will be impossibly difficult for them but he is an unusual manager and with the millions they get from the Final he could do the trick to keep them up.

Not too sure just how much interest we have in Hunt (if any) or if the media just need a story and a handfull of names to give it credit.

For me, i hope we miss out, we just don’t need any more midfielders and other positions are more of a priority anyway. Add to the fact Hunt is recovering from a long abscense due to injury and i reckon we would be far better off staying well clear. Why release Koren then sign Hunt? Makes no sense.

I can see your point but I wouldn’t be so rash. Carson was a faultless Premiership Goalie before McLaren chucked him in at the deep end. He’s suffered since but he is still the same man who had a stonkin season at Villa. Give him time. Miller also needs time to fully recover from injury and Matock needs time to grow up and except he has to fight for his place, but I think the latter could eventually make a decent full-back. Meite is good backup for Olsson and Tamas. He has Premiership experience and he might pick up some tips from his team mates this summer in SA. I rate Zuiverloon and I think he would be excellent back up for a new full-back. I also rate Bednar and recon we shouldn’t throw him out when we know how hard it is to find decent strikers for this level. That doesn’t mean to say I don’t thnk we need at least 2 quality addtons in that department. Unless Wood has an astonishng World Cup I would loan him out and as for Moore he’s the only player I can’t defend although I was pleased his team mates did. Having sad this we do need to clear some players out if we are going to bring some in and the ones you mentioned are top of the list along with Ruben Reid but I have full faith in RDM. Has he really had a fair crack in a team that wasn’t struggling. I’m not saying that we won’t struggle but he has an eye for goal, a fair turn of pace and he can wander out to the wings and drag defenders with him. I still think he could do a job for us. Anybody agree with me?

You have the very slightest of moral high grounds at the moment in that you’ve stayed up for one season. Well done for that. BUT, you still haven’t proved worthy of even being called a yoyo club as to do this you need to prove that you’re at least good enough to keep going up. You haven’t done that yet have you? You’ve managed two promotions and staying up once. Two aces and a king high. I’m afraid our record of a royal flush in recent years makes that look a bit sick. So perhaps it would be better if you waited until the end of this season before being so smug ay.

Chopra had his chances in prem,Quality signings was the word used was’nt it??.As I said before Ledley is a class act and would give us something different.I would rather give Seb another season than waste money on someone else not proven in the top tier.Cardiff will be struggling finance wise and Ledley is out of contract next month,if he’s fit and over his injuries he’s worth paying good wages for and for a minimum of outlay transfer wise.Up the Wolves.

What a great advert for football, the CCC Play-off Final. All the ‘pundits’ could talk about was defences not covering properly yet we had five goals before halftime and nearly a dozen. Holloway said before the game he was going for it full out and it looked like Cardiff had been told to do the same by Jones. I can only think both managers needed medical attention at half time as the game did close up a bit. Chopra is a striker. He knows all about space and gets just about offside (or not), every time he goes for goal. A nightmare for the defence. He was gutted at the end and could probably be persuaded to leave Cardiff. Temperament? That’s for the gaffer to find out. We can only guess.

Your post seems to confirm Sir Terry’s point in post 50.
Are these the depths you need to trawl to find something you can better us in.
Neither Van Damme or Hunt have signed for you yet. I believe Hunt has said his preference is Everton and I doubt if Van Damme has any idea who either Wolves or West Brom are. As for Elliott. Yes we were trying to sign him as he has a PSV1 and our coach driver was retiring.
On transfer deadline day the year we pipped you to promotion you pipped us to sign the Wimbledon winger (can’t remember his name now.) He was about to sign for us when you stepped in and offered more money and a better chance of promotion (ho ho ho.) He didn’t sign because he thought you were a big club.
George was a snotty nosed little kid in Belfast at the time and Fergie the same in the depths of Scotland. So what if Wolves were one of the big English teams at the time. That was the 1950′s. In the 1900′s The Royal Artillery were a big team but it’s ancient history. Look at Forest, look at Leeds.
Some Wolves fans need to have a reality check. You are not a big club, we are not a big club. We are medium size clubs struggling to establish ourselves in the PL that both happen to have a good HISTORY but it means little in modern day football unfortunately.

    The Usual Suspects

47 Chris imv Steve Morgan is well aware of the past at the club and I dont believe that someone who seriously bid to take on Liverpool would undertake to take on a club without having the funds or the capacity to make serious investments when required for both the team and the ground development – The house that ‘Jack’ built is in need of a revamp and it would be great to have all 4 corners filled in as currently we were 11th in attendences last season in the Prem

It is also very apparent that the clubs that have the attendences circa 40,000 tend to have the investment into players etc

I believe that 4 or 5 Prem Proven Quality players will enhance what we have and turn the draws last season into wins and with the news that Blues are now in the frame for Hunt – this could again turn into a dutch auction

One of my fears is that Mr Moxey is too far heavily into making it known to all agents and clubs that ‘we’ – imv ‘he’ will not pay more than x, y or z and thats even before we start talking to anyone – It is sensible to not be held to ransom but to constantly bang the drum before you even start to talk is very very OTT imv – so much so that even the likes of managers like Warnock has said that Moxey tends to love bargains even to the point of talking himself out of deals!

Its common sense to know that you want the best for less BUT its pure stupidity to keep banging on about this and show the world that your only interest is ‘penny pinching’

That is probably what the likes of James McCarthy meant when he chose to sign for Wigan instead of Wolves due to ‘lack of ambition on our part’ – a ‘young and hungry’ player that would have enhanced our squad but at the last minute chose Wigan

Reading between the lines imv I believe that Moxey doesnt want to ‘break’ the payscales for a few 4 or 5 Prem Proven Quality because he fears a backlash from existing players who would want the same wages even though most of what we have are better quality Championship players in truth and I can imagine that Moxey beats this drum whenever MM asks for better players

Andy Gray was right in saying that the tactical change saved our season BUT we now need better quality to ensure the points

Well done to Blackpool, the Baggies and Newcastle on their promotions to the Prem Hope you enjoy your time in the Prem

    We hope for better

    Up the Wolves!

    Mulumbu and Dorrans played about half a dozen games each towards the end of the season and looked pretty good;

    Brunt and Morrison both had excellent seasons;

    Thomas and Barnes have had injury troubles but both have been touted as potentially very good players;

Valero is a good footballer but can’t play without freedom and someone to protect him (read Nejad Milijas).

    Zubar is your Guadeloupe international.

My point is that your suggestion that second-rate international team’s players couldn’t get near your team just isn’t true. I missed your Austrian and Belgian and ROI internationals, Elokobi can’t get in the Cameroon team.

In truth, I don’t think a lot of our players would be in your first eleven because ours were bought to be expansive and play attacking football. By the same token, I don’t think any of yours with the exception of Jarvis, Doyle and perhaps Milijas, would get near our team because they were bought primarily to do a job in a tight, compact MM team.

If you’re arguing who has the technically most gifted, then I don’t think there’s a debate when 8 or 9 of your first eleven are in the side to contain the opposition and hit the ball into areas for Doyle.

no56 Usual, I share your concerns over transfer policy, but I think rebuilding Molineux will make matters worse. We will go into debt Jez Moxey has already confirmed this.If we cannot sign enough quality now, what chance do we have if we are in debt. This board has previously been swamped by Moxey’s mates saying we do not want to spend big because that will lead to financial ruin yet they remain silent at indebting us with not needed ground development. There is a massive list of clubs with financial problems due to spending millions on ground development. I suspect the ground development will be a way for Steve Morgan to get back some of his £30M,because Redrow will surely do some of the work.

    The Usual Suspects

63 Chris You may have a point regarding the Redrow connection but imv I feel that SM would not go into this blindly – by that I suspect that SM has already looked at the possibillities of other parties getting involved with the ground redevelopment

If you look at most clubs they are in various amounts of debt and have no room to develop any further as they cannot raise funds to develope their own ground and expand their fan base

Unfortunately this is a double edged sword that effectively means that if we dont consider moving forward on both counts we will always be in the bottom half of the Premiership

Whilst I dont advocate throwing caution to the wind – I also dont advocate a far too cautious approach in the development of the team with players and the facillities which are ageing

Mr Moxey imv has his own agenda as I suspect that if he reduces the amount we spend it reflects in his bonus each season

As for becoming in debt – to whom? I suspect Steve Morgan??? After all if the ‘vision’ is for a better/ much improved stadium at some point we will need the playing staff to produce better each season – I dont believe we need radical changes straightaway – just 4 or 5 Prem Proven and small adjustments each season thereafter

I can remember the pact atmosphere at the Mol when we played Middleborough years ago who had Craig Johnston etc in their side – I think we had an attendence of 40,000??? if my memory serves me well

What a place that will be when we can achieve better and move this club forward – and to do that we need to have a pact stadium that will attract the inevstors interest not a yo yo club that bounces to and fro from the Chumpionship – Will we achieve that with Moxey as CEO – I have my doubts???

But in short, Chris I mostly agree with you on most of your threads but I have to say I do believe that SM has the clout the contacts and the cash himself – My doubts are whether Mr Moxey can get the Prem Proven into negotiate as his ‘reputation’ for overkilling a deal is common place

    Up the Wolves!!!

I’ve read the article (again!) and can still not see any quotation of Hunt claiming Wolves as his preferred choice. Just because the E&S says so i guess it must be true then!!

I do take notice of my small club that has to live in the shadow of your massive all-conquering giant of a club, and thats just the point, i tend to listen to the FACTS not all the half stories churned out by the media.

If you believe everything you read in the papers, that probably explains why you and other wulfs believe you are such a big club….deluded hardly covers it!

We were a big club once but not anymore.
Funnily enough I was saying that on here myself a few times during the season.

Clubs like ours and yours have to become much more established than we are now. Big clubs imv are the clubs with the spending power to attract the big name players. Neither of us will get there in the near future and may never do so. You can’t pay for a Mini and expect to get a Ferrari. Quality costs simple as that really.

Any Wolves fan who thinks we will have a better ride this season is wrong imo. Until Wolves (and WBA) properly establish themselves, we will always be hovering around the wrong end of the table imo. There may be one season where one of us has a freak purple patch (it could happen but I doubt it). Unfortunately I believe no matter who we sign, we will still struggle until we find which is our best squad, formation and tactics and they play together until they know each others game. I hope I’m wrong of course I do, but I suspect I’m probably right.

Seriously now, best of luck for the season and maybe we both will be keeping the midlands on the Premiership map along with Villa, Blues and Stoke.

    Up The Wolves.
