Albion’s Jonas Olsson urged to keep his temper
Saturday 22nd May 2010, 2:00PM BST.
Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo has admitted vice-captain Jonas Olsson must curb his temper to avoid needless Premier League suspensions.
The Swedish centre-back’s fiery temperament has become infamous with Baggies fans following numerous rants at opponents and officials.
And Di Matteo has now revealed the Hawthorns coaching staff have tried to calm the defender down.
“We’ve spoken to Jonas Olsson many times,” said Di Matteo. “We will keep talking to him and make sure he doesn’t get any silly bookings for arguing with linesmen and referees.
“That’s only going to be damaging himself and the team. But he is a very passionate player. He loves the club and gives everything for the team. But he also needs to understand there are limits to what he can do when talking to the officials.”
And Di Matteo hinted that Olsson and skipper Scott Carson will retain those positions for next season.
“I chose the two to represent the team,” said the Italian. “In Scott I saw a player very well respected within the team and dressing room.
“Jonas Olsson has done very well for us this year. He is our vice-captain and shows leadership qualities.”
* Di Matteo was speaking at the Banks’s/Gold Football Forum at Oldbury Royal British Legion.
