Roberto Di Matteo set for derby days
Friday 21st May 2010, 10:00AM BST.
Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo is relishing a bumper season of derbies in the Premier League next season.
The Hawthorns head coach is leading the Baggies into the West Midlands’ most exciting season in a generation, with four of the region’s clubs together in the top flight for the first time since 1984.
And Di Matteo is keen to tackle the other top sides – especially Black Country rivals Wolves.
He said: “Last summer when I joined, one of the first things they told me was about the local rivalry with Wolves.
“I think it’s going to be very interesting to play so many teams from the area. They definitely add a different juice to the game when they are derbies.
“I have played in many myself and there are no real favourites. Somebody might be higher up the table and somebody else might be lower, but you go into that game and anybody can win.
“I’m sure there will be some great atmospheres in those games. We can’t really choose derbies.
“That’s the way it’s going to be and you just have to try to enjoy them and try to get the best out of the games, rather than thinking there are too many of them.
“It will be great to measure ourselves against those teams.”
Roberto Di Matteo was speaking at the Banks’s/Gold Football Forum, which can be heard from 7pm tonight on 990am or 1152am.

Six nerve-tingling, high octane matches. I would love to have said eight, but even thinking of Stoke gives me the willies. The vast majority of West Midlands fans are decent people. Let not the few loony thugs spoil the fun. If you’re a young Wulfie or Baggy, get your dad or granddad to tell you all about the 4-4 draw at The Molineux in 1954, Champs versus FA Cup winners. Not a bad incident all night, just glorious, stunning football in front of a packed stadium. Respect was what we had.

No.4 Jack, I see you’re reminiscing too about the old days. The players won’t cycle in before playing though, that is frowned on, so it’s got to be the No.90 bus to Alverwumpton.
