Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has targeted some "rich pickings" this summer in setting about reshaping his Saddlers squad.

The League One club's budget and attendances felt the full force of the economic down town over the last year, with chairman Jeff Bonser imposing an even tighter grip on the club's spending.

But Hutchings is optimistic there will be plenty on offer, as other cash-conscious clubs release players they might otherwise keep due to reduced budgets.

He said: "There will be a lot of players out there - there were a lot last year and I expect there to be more this year.

"Because of the recession the clubs will not be able to keep the squads they had last season. It will be a testing time so we will have to wait and see who and what comes available.

"But perhaps there will be some rich pickings. Players have to be realistic in what clubs can pay."

Hutchings believes the scramble for signatures still leaves the players in a powerful position.

He added: "They will probably have different offers and will leave their options open as much as possible, especially as they get paid until the end of June.

"You always want to get one or two done quickly but I was a player and I did the same sort of thing. The ball is in their court a little but the longer you leave it, clubs might take other players if the opportunity comes to sign them.

"Other players might want to get sorted and go on their holidays knowing what heir future holds."
