Bednar on course after hernia surgery
Wednesday 12th May 2010, 10:26AM BST.
Albion striker Roman Bednar is on course to be fit for the start of the new season after his hernia surgery was declared a success.
The Czech Republic international has a successful operation in Prague earlier this week to cure the hernia problem that dogged him for the final weeks of last season.
Surgeon Josef Maurer, who performed the operation, confirmed that Bednar can begin his rehabilitation next week and should be fit for full training in around five weeks.
That would make him available in good time for the start of pre-season training at the beginning of July.
Dr Maurer said: “Everything went well. Roman will be sent home and in four to five days he will begin a recovery.
“In approximately five weeks he should be allowed to return to a full load.”
Bednar was keen for surgery early in the close season to ensure a full pre-season programme, having missed the start of last season because of a drugs suspension.
The 27-year-old is anxious to make an impact in the Premier League, after suffering a lack of opportunites in the top flight under previous manager Tony Mowbray.
But the decision to have surgery immediately after the conclusion of the Championship season forced Bednar to miss a proposed international comeback, forcing his withdrawal from his nation’s friendlies against Turkey and the United States later this month.
While Bednar recuperates, up to five of his team mates are braced for World Cup action.
Slovenia captain Robert Koren and Chile defender Gonzalo Jara were last night confirmed in their nations’ provisional 30-man World Cup squads.
Abdoulaye Meite has already been included in the Ivory Coast’s initial 30-man group, while Chris Wood has made New Zealand’s final 23.
Left-back Marek Cech is still sweating on a role in the Slovakia squad, but his strong form at the end of the season is expected to win him a place.
Defender Gabriel Tamas, who looks set to make a permanent move to Albion from Auxerre, is also in Romania’s squad for their summer friendlies.

Hey you guys, Blackpool will have some say in who goes up. They beat Notts Forest who should have walked it on what we saw at The Hawthorns. Never underestimate Ian Holloway.
He can make chalk taste like cheese. Three seasons ago the Stoke supporters were ready to hang, draw and quarter Pulis and they only scraped into the playoffs if I remember rightly. The Wulfies may be scared of Cardiff, but I tremble at the thought of ‘Delilah’.

Thanks for that, for one terrible moment I thought we were going to get him. He’ll suit the
woolfs as he knows how to ” Chop-Chop “. Look how many penalties we’ll have playing the woolfs, every time our raiders get in their box.
