Carson reveals dressing room ‘aggro’
Monday 10th May 2010, 11:28AM BST.
Albion captain Scott Carson has revealed how dressing room “aggro” helped inspire the team’s promotion to the Premier League.
The skipper believes raised voices after some of their Championship setbacks helped keep the club on course for a top-two Championship finish.
The Baggies only lost back-to-back matches once throughout their promotion campaign, with Carson believing the exacting standards set by himself and other senior squad members played a part.
He said: “I’m one of those players that want to win everything,” he said. “Even if it’s just a silly little game in training, I always want to win.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that and sometimes if things go the wrong way then you do let your emotions get the better of you.
“But I just want to win everything and I want everyone around me to want the same things as me.
“Over the season we played Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday and if there was a bit of aggro in the dressing room after a game on a Saturday then it made it that little bit more focused on a Tuesday.
“I think when we had a low point after a game, we bounced back really well.”
Carson was the surprise choice to captain the Baggies’ promotion campaign, following the loss of former captain Jonathan Greening.
The England international believes the extra responsibility helped him keep his post-match comments constructive.
He said: “When the gaffer gave me the armband I was delighted and I wanted to take it. It has put added responsibility on my shoulders.
“When we got in the dressing room after a bad result, maybe in the past I was one to throw my toys, but now in a season where there were 46 games you’ve got to try to pick people up.”
