Wolves could lose Doyle warns boss

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has admitted the club could not stand in the way if a bigger club comes in for star striker Kevin Doyle this summer.

The manager is confident of keeping his prize asset, providing long term interest from more established clubs does not solidify.

Champions League qualifiers Tottenham as well as Villa and Everton are all admirers of the 26-year-old, who has top scored with eight goals this season.

But cashing in on Doyle is the last thing Wolves want as they try to attract the players to help them establish in the Premier League next season.

The player himself is settled happily in the area, has never played better and is not the sort to be easily swayed by outside influences.

But the club are realistic and know if that interest did turn serious they would have the very different problem of getting the best possible price for the £6.5million record signing.

McCarthy admitted the club are powerless to prevent the Republic of Ireland international leaving if the big boys come knocking.

Asked of his confidence in Doyle remaining a Wolves player, McCarthy said: “Yes I am confident. He makes his own mind up about things.

“But we all know how football works – Doyle is a Wolves player but if Manchester United, Manchester City or Liverpool come hunting him, I’d have a real problem.

“Not everyone is for sale but sometimes you just can’t stop it. If a big enough club comes and asks, it’s difficult for anyone – it’s the way of the world.

“That’s the way it goes, just like if I go looking for someone else, they’ll be saying ‘Wolves are coming, it’s a Premier League club.’

“Doyle fits into that process exactly the same as anyone else. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard might leave Liverpool – or we and Doyle oblivious to all that?

“If they’re a target for someone, we’re all a target.”

Speculation in his native Ireland persists that Doyle is being pressured to seek a move to a bigger club.

But McCarthy is confident Doyle, who is under contract for another three years, is his own man and will make his own decision.

He said: “Kevin looks after himself – he hasn’t got any agent and no one is nibbling my ears about him, he’s terrific.”

If we sell Doyle then really we may as well just pack up . I understand that if a big comes in for him it would be hard for us to keep him. We want to build next season and push for mid table . If we sell Doyle that will look great to potential targets we are after. I find these comments rather odd from MM . Almost as if we have had offers and we are trying to bump up the price.

I have watched Wolves since the 1960s. Kevin Doyle has the best first touch of any Wolves player I have ever seen. His touch and control made 4-5-1 work wonders for us this season. Mick made a key signing in bringing him to Wolves and we would be a diminished team without him. Wolves have big decisions to make about maintaining their wage structure and maintaining a great team approach. This could all collapse if we start paying unrealsitic, sums to current players like Kevin and newcomers. A team ethos is key to Wolves success. Kevin will have lots of media pressure from Ireland. This would be even stronger if Ireland were going to World Cup. Perhaps the key for what seems to be a very nice guy, like Doyle, is the quality of players we now bring in. If we don’t deliver some more quality players and offers come in for him he might be tempted. The big clubs can offer silly money. This would turn anybody’s head and unsettle them.We all hope Doyle stays. Putting an ace striker alongside him could see us really make a mark next season.

It’s a bit naive to reckon we are advertising Doyle with an article like this. The speculation about bigger clubs looking at him started weeks ago. The BBC MOTD mob certainly highlighted it.
We all know what happens in football. They kiss the badge one week and move on the next.
We’d all be a bit gutted if he went to Arsenal, just like Rapid Vienna were when we nicked The Hoff last August
One thing does surprise me and that’s Doyle not having an agent.

I’m sorry to say that If I were Mick McCarthy I wouldn’t mention that Wolves can still lose Kevin Doyle in the summer if a big club comes in for him. It’s like telling the big clubs come and get him if you have the money.
The good thing is that Kevin has no agent to lure him away from Molineus so he will get a big slice of the fee, or as we say it to win the lottery off him.
Kevin will surely stay especially if Wolves invest in quality players to help him and the team.
It’s natural that some players will be leaving Molineux especially as from next season the squad has to be made up of 25 players. This can be a drawback or a big helping hand as all teams, whether they are Chelsea, United, Arsenal or Liverpool, will be on a par and the fat cats won’t have the advantage over clubs not so rich as themselves.
Hope Wolves end the season on a high next Sunday so we’ll have a whole summer to savour it instead of a big defeat as against Pompey.
By the way today it’s May 7, the exact date when Wolves won their last FA Cup against Blackburn in 1960.
I know all about it as as a young 18 year old was at Wembley to see them do it. The players, Finlayson, Showell, Harris, Clamp, Slater, Flowers, Deeley, Stobart, Murray, Broadbent, Horne, are all legends now as they are a part of Wolves chequered history.

There’s no point slating Mick for stating the obvious. He’s not exactly putting Doyle on the market or saying anything that other managers don’t know already is he? He’s just telling it how it is. No matter what he says, does or achieves, some will always want criticise him – as if them being “proved right” all along matters more than seeing Wolves succeed. Bonkers.

But anyway, if you want to criticise Mick for stating the obvious, go ahead but just know that you’ll have to criticise Doyle as well.

“There is no point leaving Wolves to go sideways,” says Doyle. “It would have to be something that I, and everyone, would think would be a big step up. But I’ll worry about that in the summer. I just want to finish the season well and don’t want the feeling of being relegated again. When we’re sitting on the beach and enjoying being Premier League players, we can worry about anything that comes after that.”

2- the advertising was done with his performances on the pitch. Do you really believe that the bigger clubs will read this article and learn something new? They wont read this and realise that they can put a bid in for the lad, they knew that anyway. Its been this way in football for a while, as the bigger clubs are always willing to snatch tallent away from the smaller clubs, If a top club manager leanrt something knew from reading Micks comments, then hes been living under a rock for a decade.

This is more a statement for the fans, saying that hes not for sale, but if a top club put in a firm bid that is too good to refuse, then dont be suprised if we sell him. In my humble oppinion, if the albion can put a £12m valuation on Dorrans who has never played in the premier, we should put at least 15-20m on the lad.

As for Keane, I heard an interesting conversation on the radio talking about how when Keane went to Liverpool, Benitez ended up not being keen on him, then he went back to Spurs and Redknapp not being keen on him! He wasn’t played on a regular basis. Was this to do with an attitude problem in the dressing room? Or that they paid big money and ended up just not rating him? Yes he started his pro career with wolves, but that was a while ago and I feel at times his name gets mentioned simply because of all the ‘ old romantics’ on this blog! ;) Thing is, are there better options out there?

look at the style of football we have had to play, one up front on his own and for my mind he was superb.
who else at the club this season could have done the same job.
i do wish mick would shut up blabbing to the papers that out best player is for sale at the right price why?
who would be buy as a replacement.

what we need during the summer is some quality 3-4 good players, hopefully we can more easily attract this type of player.quality not quantity please.

we need to spend similar money on a proven striker, apart from doyle this season the rest seb, hoff, iwelumo etc have either failed to produce or mick doesn’t rate them so not had a chance so why keep them.

a mass clearance is needed, the deadwood needs to be got rid of, it will bring somemoney in and save on wages but i fear some of last summers signings will go for nothing like we paid for them.

In a fantasy world, we’d be signing 3-4 players of Doyle’s calibre, and finish half way up the league next season without undue worries of relegation. But reality dictates that Doyle WOULD move should any club of stature and Premiership pedigree make a serious move for him- we couldn’t/wouldn’t be able to compete on any comparable level, be it wages, standard of football or realistic ambition. We did extremely well to be first in with an astute and solid offer for a player, who, it should be remembered, had a recent history of injury problems and who was playing Championship football. It’s an entirely different kettle of fish now we’re trying to compete on an uneven playing field; hampered in courting better players by our status as a relative newcomer and relatively low-wage paying club. But if worst comes to worst, we could do worse than negotiating a swap deal with a club who have fringe players who would strengthen our own 1st team.

Instead of spouting such tripe – why dont we focus on getting players of the same quality as Doyle to add to the achievement of staying up this season. In case we have forgotten – Wolves are a big club – we have just been asleep for too long !! Stirring up nonesense is not helpful – so lets concentrate on the positive please !!

Is this MM putting his foot in it yet again and disagreeing with what Steve Morgan stated quite clearly yesterday, as reported by the Express and Star, or is it their reporter asking him yet another stupid question to try and create a story out of nothing and stir the fans up as usual?

Oh Mick why did you have to say that? Nobody else in the premier league knew we had Kevin Doyle and that he has done well for us this season, you big silly. All that has happened is that someone has asked Mick a question and he’s give that a straight answer. Simple. Next.

I have a feeling that the Wolves are more than happy to sell Doyle if the price is right. Several stories over the last few day’s saying he’s going nowhere, then the player saying he’s happy and now this. As far as I can tell it’s just a way of saying to the fans we want to keep him but if anyone wants to buy him then they’ll have to pay well over the odds.

I really hope I’m wrong as I think he is the sort of player we have to keep to build on this season but have a feeling he will move on.

yes he a good player but he look better because he playing in a very poor team and is
not going to score many goals. with our midfield rooney would be lucky to score 15goals. with the muppet here who is going to
come he only want players who put a shift in,
milijas is class but does not run round like a
headless chicken so he not played what a waste.we will never go forward with the muppet
here and can not see us staying up next season
    unless there a big changes.

Mick-Mac you’ve stired up a hornets nest by saying it as it is. Although I think you were ripped off when you bought Doyle, he was never worth £6.5m, when you consider what ALBION paid for a superior talent in Graham Dorrans. Most of the money you spent last year was thrown down the
drain because most of them will be shipped out
now for little or nothing, having very little playing time in the first team. Obviously you hav’n't rated any of them. There’s not many if any good footballers wanting to come to Wolves
because of the dismal style of football you play.
Therefore your gates will fall as fans are questioning the bordom by wanting more play the other side of the half-way line. What a joke your
new strip sponsor is, I think Jezz has bought his pie and pint back with this deal. think of all the young fans telling their parents “I ay wearin thet”.
I suppose I’ll have SERIOUS-COLIN on my back now.
Ah well you can’t win them all.

52 – isnt it obvious that most the strikers playing at man utd and co, would struggle to score goals at lower clubs, why? because we create fewer chances and we have less quality to create thos chances. You said Rooney would struggle to score 15 goals, so isnt that backing up the reason why doyle has only scored 8? would he not score more goals at somewhere like aresnal, who would allow him to get into better positions and allow him allot more chances.

You obviously dont watch the matches, because Every game i have seen Milijas, hes been struggling to move by the second half, hes not fit enough, and hopefully can improve with more games and a decent pre season of fitness training. Your probably one of the idiots who said we were guarenteed to go down this season, so i doubt any one is going to take notice of your predictions for next season.

Well, that’s not the way to run a football club. Firstly, you have to keep ALL yr prize assets, (players/crown jewels) like Doyle, etc, they have only been with this team for ONE season, the guy is just warming up and gelling with the other members of the team. Secondly, you have to build around yr class players inorder to put confidence into yr team and then follow that up with a sensible team building and plan of attacking football that puts confidence with the players and the whole team, look what Alex Ferguson has done with United? follow him and you wont go wrong. Dont go getting rid of yr best players before they have started to play proper football, encourage them more, breed confidence into the state of play, if you then get a trail of bad results then reconsider yr options, LEARN by yr previous mistakes and correct the style of play, more strikers up front like wolves played when they won their matches in the Championship. Take initiative from the old old wolves team of the 1950′s and 1960′s when wolves were big business, dont sound off like a load of weeslies, be determined on what you want to achieve and you will eventually get results, dont throw yr players away after just one season. For a wolves supporter from those glory days when wolves were big take a leaf out of the old gold memoirs and practise the best of what you know and success will surely come to the team. Come on Mick, listen to what you are being told. Come on the wolves.

I’m stunned of the criticism of Doyle’s 8 goals, I’m sorry for this assumption I’ll make on those who have called Doyle’s return of goals poor that you people haven’t seen much of him in a Wolves shirt. Too score 8 in a team that struggles to create clear cut chances for him is remarkable achievement, look at his finish against West Ham, there is no other striker at Wolves who could of scored that goal, only Doyle.

He has so much work to do because of the lack of creative quality around him, there’s only Jarvis and of course Milijas isn’t rated much by Mick, David Jones has done well since he came into the side but there isn’t much else in creative midfielders unless Kites can do it next season. Doyle has ended up in games been the only creator of better chances going to players who can’t score, and the amount of class needed for a goal scorer in this league is way higher than the Championship that’s why I think Blake will struggle again next season.

Sadly if 15 million is on the table from one of the big clubs then I suspect he’ll go.
