Dorrans has it all to do warns Regis

Albion legend Cyrille Regis believes Baggies Player of the Season Graham Dorrans must prove himself all over again in the Premier League.

The former Hawthorns hero is a big admirer of Dorrans, and believes the Baggies should build the team around for next season’s top-flight campaign.

But Regis believes the Scotland international midfielder must still prove he can make the step up from Championship level, having started just five times in the Premier League last time out under Tony Mowbray.

He said: “Graham has done well in the Championship, where we expected West Brom, Newcastle and Middlesbrough to do well, although Boro didn’t do that.

“But the Premier League is a different level. The two teams did well because they have been in the Premier League and had Premier League money, so they can carry on paying decent wages and they have got up.

“We will see how he does in the Premier League next year.

“But he is certainly a good player and it’s probably about Albion building the team around him.”

Albion have already rejected a bid for Dorrans from West Ham, with the £4million valuation from Upton Park laughed off by the Hawthorns hierarchy.

Regis believes the Baggies were right to treat the opening offer from the Hammers with disdain.

He said: “One thing you have to say about the chairman is that he gets top money for his players and £4million isn’t top money for Graham Dorrans.

“How much he is worth is down to the chairman and the football club.”

Dorrans swept the board in the Baggies’ end of season awards, claiming fans and players’ Player of the Year honours as well as winning a place in the PFA’s Championship team of the season.

But winger Chris Brunt believes the whole squad must take credit for their record-breaking promotion.

He said: “Dozza deserved to get in there. He’s had a great season. You could probably say six or seven of our players deserved to get in there, because it’s been that good a season for us.

“It’s definitely been a team effort and I’m sure ‘Dozza’ would hold his hand up and say him being in that team is as much down to the us as him.

“It’s a great achievement for him and shows you what kind of season he has had and what impression he has left on other teams’ fans.”
