Kightly’s sorry for long period out
Friday 30th April 2010, 10:15AM BST.
Wolves winger Michael Kightly has issued an apology to fans and his team-mates for missing the chance to star in the club’s successful survival bid.
The exciting wide man has been sidelined since his ankle injury in November with chronic inflammation of his patella tendons in his knees and has made just three starts in 13 months since breaking his foot in March 2009.
Having flown to Spain to see a leading consultant, the 24-year-old is still under treatment for the problem with his knees.
But Kightly is itching to get back and play a part again next season.
He said: “I had a little taste of it earlier in the season. But I think the only thing I’ve really done is win a penalty against Villa. That’s the only contribution I’ve made which is disappointing.
“I’m gutted for that and want to apologise to everyone at the club and every single fan. Hopefully I can prove my worth next year.
“It’s definitely given me a little taste and made me more hungry, if I could have got any more hungry than I actually am!”
Kightly has endured a mental as well as physical battle, having spent so long out and now facing up to a second successive summer trying to get fit.
He said: “I just need to get fit. I’ve struggled this season mentally this year as well as physically and it’s important not just for me to be playing, but for my career to get back fit.
“I’m still working on recovering from the injury and have got a good few months now to get things right.
“I’ll be in every day over the summer trying hard to do that.”
Kightly had been expected to be back before Andy Keogh in January after being injured in the defeat against Birmingham on November 30, but the pain in his knees has held him back.
