Dorrans urged to forget transfer talk
Friday 30th April 2010, 10:29AM BST.
Star midfielder Graham Dorrans has been urged to forget transfer speculation and start thinking of leading Albion’s bid for Premier League stability next season.
Assistant boss Eddie Newton, who has spent the past year working closely with the 22-year-old Scotland international, reckons a big move this summer could come too soon for Dorrans.
Instead, Newton wants the new PFA Fans’ Championship Player of the Year to focus on at least one more campaign at the Hawthorns – and is optimistic Dorrans will.
Even before the season is over, the transfer talk around the goalscoring playmaker has already started with West Ham having a cheeky £4million kicked into touch by chairman Jeremy Peace this week.
Newton accepts that could be just the start of the bidding for the player, but believes the Baggies will not be in the market to sell their star asset and that Dorrans is not in the mood to go.
The assistant said: “Graham is very happy here – he’s had a fantastic season for such a young man.
“He’s got his head screwed on – he’s very level and very focussed on his career. He loves his football and gives you 100 per cent in training. He can only play one way and that is at a very high level, always pushing himself.
“There’s other things we are trying to add to his game now. There may well be more bids coming in, but that’s normal when you have his ability.”
But Newton believes a premature move away from the Hawthorns could stunt his growth as a player.
He said: “It will be best for ‘Dozza’ to develop one more season at least with us here. He knows everyone and everything around him and the chance is there for him to excel with us next season. I think he is of the same mind.
“Graham is young and ambitious. But he needs to develop a little bit more – although he’s already not far off.
“That’s why all the bigger clubs are looking at him and will continue to do so.”
Albion did not take kindly to the offer from West Ham, which they felt was both insulting and little more than mischief making.
Newton does not believe the club are in the market to sell.
He added: “You know what the chairman is like – this sort of move is not going to bother him one bit.”

All good and well saying don’t go but then JP has stated that he will not go for less than 12mil, so now he is inviting offers, lets hope that Man City, Chelsea, Spurs, Everton or Arsenal dont like the sound of that.
Any news on the sponsor for this season?
1) Not sure about being linked with us, I think we’ve signed too many ‘lower’ league players as it is…….
It’s been suggested that the 4 mil. bid from the bubble blowers could be a cynical ploy by Mr. Sullivan to try to apease the west ham fans, knowing that Albion would turn it down, but looking like the hummers are already after players.Surely not?If it was true,it would mean the new owners see their fans as being easy to fool, which probably wouldn’t go down too well in the east end.I’m sure they would never dream of it….

Re: 2
In a couple of years time they should feel quite at home then… On the other hand, Mick & Moxy might find a few ‘higher’ league players willing to slum it.
unproven player simple as. only played lower league football.
I think if we get offered a ludicrous amount of money – Curtis Davies style – JP might waver. But it’d have to be over £12 million I reckon.
And below that it wouldn’t matter if Graham wanted the move – he’s under contract and he’s going nowhere.
I don’t have much doubt he’ll go if the money’s £10m+ from a prospective top 4 club. That would enable us to significantly strengthen and if the deal came with a couple of decent loans thrown in then that would be a great deal all round. He’s good but not irreplaceable.
5 – I know you meant your comment as an insult but you are of course correct – and hopefully thats why no one will pay the 10+ millions that JP would demand for him right now.
Given a decent season in the prem his value could soar even higher – or he could do a SEB and wipe all his value off by having a stinker.
Albion fans will have no doubt that GD will be a success next season – even reasonable wolves fans can see the lad is quality – and then maybe a top team will come round with a blank cheque for JP to fill in – but thats how teams like Albion & wolves develop.
Meantime – I can’t wait to see karl Henry trying to mark him next year.

Not on this topic but I was answering a Wulfie on an earlier thread that most people won’t be going back to.
What I’d like to know from other Baggies is:-
If you were given the choice now of:-
A. To carry on playing attractive to watch attacking football but with the risk of going down again.
Or:-
B. Guaranteed 17th place by playing one striker and five defensive midfield players, parking the bus to get the odd one goal win or some goalless draws. If it meant watching attritional football even at home and scoring very few goals would it be worth it?
Over to you.

PS.
On my previous post. I asked Baggies fans for their point of view. I’d be just as interested to hear from Wolves fans on the subject.

Just saw that Bomber (not Jarrod) is presenting the medals to the players on Sunday. Typical of the man’s modesty that he said ‘it’s a great honour to be asked to do this.’ It will be an honour for the players to receive them from you Bomber.
Let’s hope the idiots don’t spoil it for the rest by running on the pitch. But then again I won’t be holding my breath.

Every once in a while a club like us will find a little gem like Dozza and when they prove they have a bit of class we watch vultures come in, but you can’t really call WHU vultures, there more like homing pidgeons in the race for what is arguably the best talent outside the top division, as for the £12 mill valuation a club that really wanted to keep there prized assett would have put a higher valuation on him as I believe that with a good season under the Albion next year he will be pushing the £20 mill barrier. This is easily the best thing that “ex” Celtic boss done for this club.
P.s is £12 million really gonna put off the likes Man City who have bag loads of cash….. At least until the Sheikhs get bored and buy a Playstation or something.

TRBH – I guess we would prefer the football – as shown in our loyalty to mowbray when we were relegated…. however I don’t think we have to choose in that way now as i believe the balance is there to be more resiliant whilst playing decent stuff.
I heard the same argument levelled at Arsenal fans this week on the radio – would you want to play great football but win nothing most years or play the Jose Mourinho way with negative tactics but regular trophies – most arsenal fans went for the football.
Two things we will have next season – proper defensive players in Mulumbo and Jara and real pace in Thomas and barnes – both things we needed last time and didn’t have….. oh, three things actually – a manager who can get things right at both ends of the pitch !!!

5- Dorrans has made more top flight starts than the great saviour, Michael Kightly. Were you saying the same about him 12 months ago?
Hi to The Real Bully Hoo, congrats to the baggies. If the wolves had not changed the system I am sure they would have been relegated. It’s impossible to compete with top 6 sides because they pay vast amounts of money for the top players. The bottom six clubs are all left chasing the same pool of players. I think one player that would be a good recruit for Wolves and the baggies is O’Hara from Spurs.

I don’t think it’s either or as I said earlier in the week on another thread. The style of play away from home has worked well and offers a good blueprint for the Prem.

Good article on the dark side about their new kit deal. Typical E&S slant in it saying “it must be good as they make the Qatar and Kuwait kits as well as an impressive portfolio of international sports clubs including the British handball teams.” Not THE mighty British handball teams.
I’m not having a go as it could be a decent kit but what’s the betting if it was us it would have been ‘West Brom get kit made on the cheap.’
Best thing on there is that about 500 Wulfies have been on complaining and generally slating it. Then along comes Laughing Wolf to say ‘I think it’s really nice’ and follows this by surprise , surprise ‘I wonder if the Albion will get a sponsor this season?’ YAWN.
Oh well at least it takes his mind off getting the saltwater out of his upholstery.

Dorrans has had a very good season but remember he has played for the second best team in the league. He gets lots of the ball, lots of shooting practise, lots of freekicks, lots of penalties. Next season he will be playing for a struggling team. He won’t see a lot of the ball, he won’t have lots of shooting opportunities, and trust me, if you’re given one penalty next season you’ll be lucky.
Oh and 8 ‘Happy_baggie’, show a bit of respect. Karl Henry is there to win the ball and keep possession of the ball. He’s proved he can do this against the very best of opponents and he would walk into your team.
Dorrans is a good player but the step up is huge and when he comes up against quality central midfielders next season especially away from home he will not half the impact he has had in the skint championship. Good player but will be put in his place more than once next season.
no.8 happy ‘im never coming on here again’ baggie, Karl Henry is by far a better ball winner then Mulumbu or Jara! Your already relegated!

Re: post 21
Why do Wolves fans keep speaking to us as though we’ve never played in the Premiership before? Has anyone else noticed this? “Trust me, you’ll not get much from the refs…”, “You’ll need a good 5 players to compete at this level…” etc. Is this all part of the superiority complex?
Thanks for the advice £3 million shirt, but we’ve had more Prem seasons than yourselves, we know what the refereeing’s usually like towards the underdog.
For the Wolves fans who don’t know, Dorrans has played in the top flight before. It might not be many games (8 I believe), but he looked lively enough in those games so I guess we’ll see……
Brunt made a point the other day about Mulumbu/Jara, and I think he’s right. Their performances next season will go as much towards deciding our fate as Dorrans’ will.

Thanks for the good wishes, always good to have a sensible Wulfie on here. You haven’t answered what I was asking though, which was would you take another season of survival watching the same type of football you have this season or would you like to see a bit of excitement at the risk of relegation.
18 Baggiebob.
Yes I do understand that next season doesn’t have to be the same as last season. Different manager, different players, hopefully different defending etc.
It’s a hypothetical question. If you had the guarantee of staying up but it meant watching dour, awful football or watching decent football with the possibility of relegation which would you choose?

Its all about surviving and trying to improve your squad each season and the system Wolves used most of the top teams use but have better players in their squad. When you keep losing, players and fans lose confidence. Regarding Dorrans I think he is an excellent player and will do well next year.

26. Would you call last season good football? Being the joke of all the pundits on MOTD? 88 passes completed in your own half but losing 3-0? Finishing bottom, you have a losers mentality if you think that is good football.
A few of the games at Wolves have been dour for the neutral supporter but we have had some cracking results and games and acheived our objective which you didnt. You will have to become a great deal more solid in order to stay up, we need goals to finish in the top 12. Two different tasks. We have also gone to villa and Stoke and scored goals and come away with a point, we can attack and score if wanted to but if we were too open we may well be relegated by now, instead we are looking to finish 14th.

Isn’t it about time these stupid petty rivalries between us and them ended.
What is the point?
Don’t you think it is good for Midlands football that we now have four teams in the prem?
I am Wolves through and through and try and look at things realistically.
Yes we have played defensively all season but is it us fans that decide how we play?
Course it isn’t. It would have been great to play attacking, exciting football and win 3-0 every game but how are you going to do that
with a bunch of championship players?
McCarthy has worked miracles to keep us up and the players deserve every credit for punching above their weight.
Hopefully now we can add a bit of quality to the squad and try and push on.
As for SEB- You have just said how negative and defensive we have been all season so how do you expect a striker to score when the service to him is non existent?
We all saw what happened last time albion were in the prem…lovely football but still relegated….
Anyone who knows anything about us will know that we have played some good football this season …it’s the quality in the final third that has let us down.
Let’s hope we can address this in the summer and who knows we may finish a couple of places higher up next season.
Building slowly but surely has got to be the way forward….
Fair play to Karl Henry as well who has been a rock …he may not have the silky smooth skills as Dorrans but boy does he give his heart and soul to the cause as does another unsung hero- Big Jody!!
So here’s to a great summer for all us gold /blue , black/ white fans of the two best teams in the black country…..
Good luck!!!!!

Some wolves fans question if Dorrans can hack it in the top flight, their problem is that they haven’t seen much real quality over the years so they can’t see the lad’s natural ability. He actually reminds me of Johnny Giles, covering loads of space in midfield, linking up moves, and like Giles he makes it difficult for opposing players to get the ball off him.Don’t forget,in his first full game for Scotland against a strong Czech Republic side,he won the man of the match award. If you have the quality, you can play at any level.

It’s all about entertaining and trying to survive.
If ALBION yo-yo for a few seasons it doesn’t matter as long as we leave a game with fine memories sometimes, they are the things that are talked about for years to come. I remember Bolton
being the first club to yo-yo and gradually they
grew stronger and with them gaining experience
over time they survived. Many P/L teams who like ALBION use an attacking 4-5-1. the football is
entertaining and plenty of goals are scored, this cannot be achieved by being ultra defensive. When
there aren’t any goals to talk about and the ball is being hoofed up or off the island,( which to me
is a form of time-wasting)The fans start getting onto the Head Coach because they are bored stiff.
You are in that situation now aren’t you?. You see
to play attacking 4-5-1 you need an abundance of
skill in midfield like ALBION have, that is why
wolves can’t play that type of game. So(29) you
are welcome to a small amount of my football
knowledge, the ALBION will learn you a lot more
when we get you next season.

33 – Jack, with your vast amount of football knowledge I’m surprised that a decade of yo-yoing hasn’t taught you that pretty football in itself doesn’t work.
Whereas our brand of football has got us more points and a higher position than any black country club in Premier League history. (cue yawn inducing claims of the weakest PL ever)
But then I do take great joy from reading your ever desperate claims to superiority over Wolves.
And by the way, whilst Peace has given you the choice of high transfer fees, low wages or low fees, higher wages, we have the envious position of being able to pay both. And pay we will.
Oh yes, make no mistake, Wolves staying up this year marked the confirmation of an ever growing divergence of our two clubs. In Wolves’ favour of course.
Although Jack the Hat’s a clever boy so he’d already know that.

31 Golden and to a lesser extent 33 Wombourne.
My question wasn’t meant as a wind up. It isn’t just me saying you were dour, if you check your own pages many of your fans (too many to all be Baggies in disguise) have been scathing about the type of football served up and you’ve made the mistake of taking it personally and becoming defensive (no pun intended.)
Golden. ‘Would I call last season good football?’ We’re down to semantics here aren’t we? It was certainly attractive football to watch but as we had to ask ourselves when Gary Megson was our manager, do the ends justify the means? Perhaps they do, it’s worked for you this season. This was re-iterated this week. Who play the good football, Inter Milan or Barcelona? Inter won so they must play the good football, Barca lost so they don’t play good football. Who would you rather watch?
Some of our own fans have answered the question by saying we won’t be playing like last season next time around, we’re more solid at the back now. It’s just about what you want to watch.
I wasn’t asking Wolves fans to justify last season, I actually praised Mick’s achievement in keeping you up. What I asked was would you be happy with another season watching the same style of football if it guaranteed you stayed up, indeed would you be happy to watch this type of football for the next ten years just to stay in the PL, I know it’s not written in stone. But would you?

I’m relishing to get down the custard bowl next season to witness 2 of the oldest rivalries in the country go to battle in the highest tier.
I think Dorrans alongside Koren,Carson, hopefully Miller who has had premiership experience with a struggling albion side will excell with a better structered side by RDM and with a side that has more experience than the Wolves will finally establish WBA as a Premiership side.
Billys wright you are obviously still bitter from the drubbing you got from us the last time we played, was it 12 goals? or shall we just leave it at many more victories in our favour.

Must I remind you that Gera, Phillips, Kamara, Koumas, Mc Shane, Davies, Robinson etc who were at your disposal during our last battle went onto bigger and better things. Our kids are now coming of age and we have added some quality and will add quality again by the time we come to play you. In the grand scheme of things I don’t think it matters much what price JP puts on him. People know what he’s worth to them and the agent will undoubtedly be feeding their imaginations.
Yes if Man City want him they can buy him but I honestly think they’re shopping in more more elevated markets, they won’t push it because they know that nice Mr McKay will alert them when the time is right. These days I think it boils down to what the player wants to do. All we can do is rely on JP to do the best for the club.
It’s the side of football we old timers find the hardest to come to terms with. I suppose it’s understandable why the youngsters become glory hunters

Like you we also have kids who are coming of age and have invaluable Championship experience the past season rarther than playing in a reserve league or sitting on an orange substitutes bench.
The structure now set out from the top seat to the reserve team is far better than before and at present there is a good vibe in the management team which have a very close bond to both the squad and Board which was totally the opposite before.
As I stated before we have a core structure to our team and granted limited Premiership experience but as JP said we will smash the current pay structure to get 1 or 2 established players.
I actually hope we can emulate what the W*%ves have done this season.(Maybe with a bit more style).
