Bomber to present Baggies medals

Albion legend Tony Brown will present the Baggies with their runners-up medals after Saturday’s final match of the season against Barnsley.

The club have urged fans not to invade the pitch at the final whistle and allow the official promotion celebrations to take place.

They will culminate with ‘Bomber,’ the club’s record goalscorer and record appearance-maker, handing over Football League medals to the promotion-winning squad and the runners-up silver salver to captain Scott Carson.

Brown said: “I feel privileged the club have asked me to present the medals. It’s a great honour.

“This season has been superb. The team have been excellent from day one and have got better and better as the season has progressed. They thoroughly deserve their promotion.

“We’ve seen everything from the team this season. They’ve entertained but have also shown the other side, both defensively and by having a lot more steel in the side.

“You’ve got to have that if you’re going to achieve anything over 46 tough games.”

Albion chief executive Mark Jenkins feels it’s fitting such a club legend will mark the occasion.

He said: “We’re delighted Tony has agreed to present the medals to the players because his presence will really add to the occasion, particularly as one of his most famous goals in an Albion shirt earned the club promotion to the top flight at Oldham in 1976.

“Not only is he a club legend for all of his on-field achievements, he has also travelled the length and breadth of the country in his role as radio pundit for Beacon and BRMB and has witnessed every game of our promotion-winning campaign.

“Of course, all of our planned celebrations are dependent on the supporters being on their best behaviour and staying off the pitch.

“But we are very hopeful this will be the case as everyone in the ground will want to see the players presented with the medals to mark their fantastic achievement this season, and also to honour the coaching staff.”
