All good things must come to an end
Friday 30th April 2010, 9:10AM BST.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill is slightly sad to see the season come to an end as the transfer rumour mill goes into overdrive for the Baggies’ Premier League charge.
As we head into the final game of the season against Barnsley on Sunday, I must admit I feel a little sad that this season has to end. It has been a wonderful season that has provided many great memories and more importantly Premier League football for next term.
After Sunday’s game, we will all be enjoying a short break until the World Cup in South Africa begins.
The rumour mill this week has gone into overdrive with the Baggies being linked to 101 different players from David James through to the return of Rob Hulse.
I know they are only rumours but seriously, where do some of these come from? Incoming transfers is the subject that every fan now turns their attention towards as the end of season approaches.
Due to it being a World Cup year, I think it’s important that we conclude the majority of our transfer business early.
Players holidays and the World Cup fanfare will mean business will be difficult to conclude, so my hope is that by being promoted so early it has allowed boss Roberto Di Matteo, Sporting Director Dan Ashworth and chairman Jeremy Peace to get a head start.
One of our biggest problems is that there will be a number of clubs shopping in the same market as ourselves and namely two of our nearest neighbours, Birmingham and Wolves.
Maybe I should organise a touring service for any prospective signings. I could pick them up at the airport and carry out a whistle stop tour of all three clubs, unless it is someone who we really want to sign, then I’d tell him the Blues and Wolves grounds had fallen down in the night, relating to a lovely dream I once had.
But this week’s subject of debate is regarding Premier League parachute payments.
The proposal is to increase the payments of any club relegated from the Premier League from £24million over two seasons up to £48million over four seasons.
Currently this is being discussed by clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two.
Personally I believe the current system is fair and extending it to four seasons will give relegated clubs an even greater opportunity to bounce back and get promoted.
This may sound strange as we are traditionally the ultimate yo-yo club and this proposed increase could no doubt benefit ourselves at some point, hopefully not.
But I do foresee a pitfall in this proposal. By increasing the payments to four years it could encourage Premier League clubs to spend even more money they haven’t got believing that the parachute payments will resolve the problem.
But what do you think?
Lastly, tonight is our celebratory pub crawl and I have had a new liver fitted especially for the occasion.
Looking forward to seeing some of you later, for anyone who is coming we will be meeting in the Vine between 7pm and 8pm, and then embarking on a short pub crawl. All are welcome!
Up the Baggies!

I read this week that when a club entitled to get Parachute payments for one more season – as we would have been if we hadn’t gone up – goes up, the remaining payment gets split amongst the rest of the Championship sides.
With up to 12 clubs being relegated over the 4 years – you’ve got to feel that this will leave a lot of money to be redistributed throughout the rest of the Championship when they get back (assuming they do).
I can’t see the Top division in teh football league voting against it in this case.
However, the rest of the league doesn’t seem to be so happy – they’ll only see a “modest” increase on the amount of money they currently receive – and that’s from the PL’s new TV deal, not parachute payments.
Personally, I’d like to see it stay as it is because when the bubble bursts – as it will inevitably will – there’s going to be some catastrophic falls from grace, leaving the well run teams (like us) to taste some glory.

if we cash in on dorrans why not do a deal where we have some of the other clubs players the asset dorrans will have many suitors so dont go for the cash go for the best players so west ham and we have, diamanti green and one other ???? so about this rumour mill !!!!!

Yes I will be sad to see the end of the season.. I had a text the other day of a friend saying I must be very happy with the promotion.. I obviously replied say I was over joyed but I did add ask me the same question this time next season and it may be a different answer lol..
I, as yourself Bomber think we will struggle to sign players due to the very fact as you say we are competing with our local rivals our main attraction hopefully being players wanting to play for RDM and our style of football.
As for the pub crawl I completley forgot about it (yes I was finally going to make an appearance)and have arranged to go for a meal:-( .. but I am sure I will see a few of you in the sportsman on Sunday

How about stopping ALL clubs buying players if they do not have the finances to do so, teams buying players on “HP” like terms is ridiculous, if you do not have the funds then you should not be allowed to buy the player.
I think the parachute payments should not be changed or if it is, how about getting a reduced payment for every season you are out of the premier league ? year 1 £5m, year 2 £3M etc.

Hi mate, like you sad to see the end of another fantastic season, midweek games, floodlights, 2 games a week, thers a lot to be said for this league. so onto next year, saturday tea time, sunday lunch and monday nights, oh a few 3 oclock saturdays !!! I’m not expecting much transfer news early, we never have rushed into it and i dont suppose we are going to change, but it would be great to have a few in before pre season, just to try and get a sttled squad and a good start. Parachute payments is an interesting topic but i hope one that doesnt affect us for a few seasons.
One last question, are you going in heels or flats ?

Jarrod.
On the first part of your blog. I know it’s become popular to say that we must have experienced PL players coming in. I’m not so sure. Our rivals up the road have managed with Doyle and Hanemann both limited experience. We have Carson, Meite and Thomas played in PL with other clubs as well as us. Olsson, Cech, Bednar, Brunt all played last season, Tamas with lots of top class European games behind him. Reid if he comes.
What kind of PL players would come to us? I think we need to be very selective if we go down this route.
If as the media already seem to have decided we lose GD this season or next then I’d rather be signing the next Graham Dorrans now so that he’ll be waiting in the wings to step up.
On the parachute payments. I thought the payments were an insurance policy to allow promoted clubs to pay PL wages without the risk of going bankrupt if they get relegated. As most contracts are three years and the first year would be in the PL surely two more years should be sufficient.
4 No1 Baggiesfan.
The problem is it’s not just the transfer fee is it, most of the outlay on a player these days is in wages and signing fees.

There was talk about the Premier forming another
division. Would the extra funding for the near the
top teams help towards that end?. Just a thought.

The PL proposal looks more than generous and
goes a long way to keeping a status quo ie in
the main keeping the same clubs involved. On
player recruitment we definately need another
Bednar type also a dominant midfield holding
player and several defenders we are rich in
skillful guys but short on bullies. I am amazed at how well Blues have done with aged
players is this the template for us to follow?
I can see us staying up but cant see Dorrans
with us after next season. Any news on Davenport ??
