Doyle challenges Wolves to buy big

Wolves striker Kevin Doyle has challenged the club to make the signings that would create a “buzz” around Molineux and avoid “second season syndrome.”

The Player of the Year contender has been a revelation since his £6.5million signing and is ready to commit his long term future to the club to ward off interest from top-six contenders.

But the 26-year-old is also keen to see quality additions to the squad that will help him as well as elevate Wolves beyond mere survivors next season.

He said: “I’m sure we’ll be signing a few players which will be keeping us all on our toes and pushing to stay in the team.

“All the players want the team to be strengthened as well. This season we’ve always been just outside the relegation zone or just in from time to time.

“If we can strengthen and push on and work hard again to be a little bit above that then we can build again. That’s what you have to try to do.

“It’s a case of not only signing new players to strengthen the squad but also it brings a buzz about the place and a freshness. That’s needed as well every so often to keep everyone excited and looking to improve and get better.

“I’m sure the gaffer is looking to strengthen the squad and hopefully it will happen.”

Doyle is good friends with Hull winger Stephen Hunt, who is set to leave the KC Stadium this summer to ease their cripplijng financial problems that will accompany relegation.

Hunt is currently sidelined until October with a foot injury but is believed to have been keen on moving to Wolves, who failed with a £5million bid for him in January.

Wolves know Hull will settle for less this summer but are believed to be still weighing up his market value before taking the plunge again.

But Doyle is desperate to avoid the complacency that set in during his time at Reading in their second season, after confounding the Premier League by finishing eighth in their first season.

He said: “I remember with Reading there was probably a bit of relaxation going into that second season – only with little things, but little things that made a big difference.

“We probably didn’t strengthen like we should have. It was almost the same team from winning the Championship and then going down.”
