Bully Bites Back with Steve Bull
Thursday 29th April 2010, 11:35AM BST.
Wolves legend Steve Bull gives it to you straight in his weekly column for the first time since the club achieved its objective of Premier League survival.
Last weekend was one to remember for Wolves fans, as the draw with Blackburn along with defeats for Hull and Burnley guaranteed us a place in the Premier League next season.
Staying in the top flight, which is obviously one of the best in the world, is a massive achievement for the club because we haven’t had success like this in years.
So, as you would expect, the atmosphere at Molineux after the Blackburn game was fantastic with everyone on a high, even though Burnley still had to play Liverpool the following day.
Saturday night I celebrated by going out for an Italian meal in Birmingham with some friends – and we made sure we had a nice bottle of champagne for the occasion!
On the Sunday, I sent boss Mick McCarthy a text after Liverpool’s 4-0 win wrapped it all up, congratulating him on the season. The manager had a lot of critics earlier in the season, but has done exactly what was asked of him and I think he’s done a great job.
Mick hasn’t necessarily done anything different to previous Wolves bosses, but what he has done is get the side working together as a team. There are no individuals out there and that was proved on Saturday when Sylvan Ebanks-Blake came off the bench, having not played much this season, to score the vital goal.
Overall the manager has got to be very happy – and probably a bit relieved as well – especially with the way the players have responded in the second half of the season. They’ve shown that a great team spirit and some hard graft can take you a long way, even at the highest level.
Everyone thought we were going to get hammered this year but going into May, we don’t have to worry about results from other games anymore and it’s great to know that Wolves will still be in the Premier League come August!
We’ve been edging closer to this moment week-by-week and, with all the talk of clinching survival, there was understandably some tension at Molineux on Saturday.
It ended up being the classic game of two halves because we couldn’t cope with Blackburn’s direct style in the first-half, but after the break we got into the game and deserved the draw.
Mick even dipped his toe in the water a little by ending the match with three up front and I’d really like to see him continue the experiments in the final two games, because players like Chris Iwelumo and Ebanks-Blake would really benefit from getting some playing time in this division.
It was great to see Sylvan being the hero on Saturday because, after being the main man in the Championship title-winning season, he’s had to bide his time this year.
There a number of other fringe players I expect to see given a chance to shine in the games away to Portsmouth and at home to Sunderland and, while I don’t necessarily see it as their last chance, it’s likely that any summer signings will push those players down the pecking order.
That’s inevitable though because there will be some that come in and some that go, but the main core of the team should all be here next season. There’s no point breaking up the team for the sake of it because they’ve been moulded into a decent side, but we will need to add more depth to the squad.
We might need another goalkeeper, unless Wayne Hennessey can show he’s up to the task at this level, a centre half as Jody Craddock might not play every game next season, and a midfielder who can come in and steady the ship. I also think there’s room for another striker, so you’re looking at least four new faces.
The teams coming up from the Championship will certainly strengthen their squads, so we need to do the same. There’s nothing to suggest we can’t stay up again, but we need to improve the spine of the team.
It has been a poor bottom half of the Premier League in terms of quality this year, so next season it will undoubtedly be tougher to repeat this success. But one more win and we’ll be on the 38-point benchmark and we’ve done well against the sides around us.
McCarthy certainly be worrying how many points we finish on though, because all that matters to him is that we’re staying in the division. Obviously it would be lovely to end on the front foot but the players have given so much this season, they deserve the chance to go out and enjoy it.
Hopefully without that pressure they’ll play some decent football but, regardless of that, the last day at Molineux is going to be one hell of a party.
I would urge the supporters to keep their celebrations in the stands though. They invaded the pitch on Saturday and I can understand why – they just couldn’t contain the excitement after so many years waiting for this.
But there will be end of season awards to hand out after the Sunderland game, so I hope everyone will respect that and avoid making life more difficult for the ground staff.
Talking of those awards, there are a few candidates for Player of the Season with the likes of goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, captain Karl Henry and star striker Kevin Doyle all standing out, but in my eyes club stalwart Jody Craddock should be the man to get it.
Jody has been a warrior this season, playing on with everything from a dead leg to stitches in his head. He’s given everything to the cause and even scored some vital goals as well.
Fans love a player who gives 100 per cent and he’s certainly one of those, so for me he’s been the player most deserving in one of the great seasons in Wolves’ recent history.
BULLY’S TIP OF THE WEEK
The team may have wrapped up their season objective last weekend, but there is still good reason to keep playing for free on the Wolves Accumulator.

I keep hearing that the Premiership will be tougher next season and yes, admittedly Burnley wre dismal away from home, Hull were dismal nearly everywhere and Pompey cut their own throats.
However, with squad limitations on numbers and nationality, and so many of the Premiership clubs in debt and spreading payments for overpriced players over future year’s Sky payments (how scary is that !)I don’t feel many of the clubs have the wherewithal to improve (Blackburn have just pulled out of a deal for some Johnny foreigner ‘cos they can’t afford him).
Also hearing the three teams coming up will be a threat. Newcastle went down with a stronger side than the one that’s stormed the Championship and Mike Ashley has given Chris Hughton £15 million to spend. A good deal of cash, but, not going to set the world alight, eh?
Baggies finished way behind as runners up and I see they are being linked with Hulse. Wow !! do you think they’d like Halford as well.
Forest have money and a good manager if they come up, but Cardiff can’t pay their way in the Championship, never mind the Premiership.
Anyway my money’s on Blackpool and an autumn or spring weekend fixture for Wolves fans.
With a few decent players brought in would think MMMs can be optimistic about targeting top twelve (not top six…yet !)
