Wolves opposing Premier League rule
Wednesday 28th April 2010, 11:30AM BST.
Wolves are to challenge the new Premier League ruling stating clubs can only register 25 players next season.
The Premier League decided last September to introduce a squad cap of 25 players including eight home-grown players from the start of the 2010-11 campaign.
A home-grown player will be one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the FA or the FA of Wales for three seasons before his 21st birthday.
Clubs will be able to supplement their squads with unlimited additional players under 21 on January 1 in the year in which the season commences.
Changes to the 25 may only be made during the transfer window.
In view of being hit with a suspended £25,000 fine for making 10 changes to their side for the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United on December 15, Wolves want to seek clarification as to how many of the 25 can they rotate from match to match at the next meeting in the summer.
“We’ve got an issue whereby you can only register 25 players for your first team squad next season – surely you should be able to play any of those 25?” said chief executive Jez Moxey.
“We will be asking for clarification at the meeting, because how many changes is too many?”
Boss Mick McCarthy said: “Surely if you name 25 players in your squad, they are all able to play?”
There have been a string of examples before and after Wolves were hit by the suspended fine where Premier League managers have made multiple team changes without their clubs being punished, most recently Fulham for replacing nine players for their 2-1 defeat at Everton last Sunday.
Manchester United changed 10 players for their final League game against Hull last season three days before their Champions League final against Barcelona, and won 2-0.
Hull stayed up because Newcastle were beaten at Villa on the last day.
In May 2007 Liverpool made nine alterations from their team that faced Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final to the one that played against Fulham four days later and lost 1-0, the Cottagers staying up by a point ahead of Sheffield United, who went down.

…and what if you change 9 0r 10 players for your next game and you win, are you still fined?

Good point. Don’t blame you. Never saw why we got a fine anyway.

Damn Straight its a bloody joke. No end of people coming up to me telling me its a disgrace we got fined when every second club in the division rotate their squads.
Nothing will come of it, just like nothing will come of the dire standard of refereeing …
we jjst have to make ourselves stronger so that we are less affected by the FA’s incompetence.
WE ARE WOLVES !!!

One rule for one, one rule for another…
Simples!!!
Nice to see that we are starting to make our own voices heard, rather than just taking all this rubbish…
Amazing how a team only a few places above Wolves, but who are in Europe can change a side and nothing is done!!!

It’s a case of double standards there by the Premier League. If rules are broken, there needs to be some consistency with punishments.
Mick’s right though. If you can only have 25 in the squad, then it’s up to the manager who plays. I think the rule states that you must play your ‘best’ side, which is totally subjective anyway.

E&S get your facts right. This is nothing about challenging the ruling, it’s about knowing how many of the 25 players can be selected i.e. it should be upto the manager to select any player from the 25.
Poor reporting!!

Theres going to be questions asked whenever a team changes players around, but at the end of the day, the only person who has a right to say who his best team is for a specific match is the manager, and for the FA to be choosing which players are best makes a mockery of todays game.
They dont know what happens in training or how fatigued players are after a weekend match. Yes Mick could have played those players against Man utd, but would they have done as good a job as the fully fit and fresh lads who came in? and would they have been as refreshed as they were against Burnley.
Allot of emphasis has been stated that he was resting them for the Burnley match which is part true, but he was also resting them after a grueling 90 minutes 3 days earlier against spurs which obviously would have took allot out of them. They still havent made a decision about Fulhams earlier resting of players.
They wouldnt have done a thing if whinging wenger hadnt have moaned as usual.

We were fined because we are not one of the top seven sides. This is why decisions go against us as well.
I did not like Mick playing the reserves – I understood why but it left a nasty taste in the mouth. But far worse is this hypocrasy by the FA. Fulham should be fined as it is disgusting that they seemed to be selective in who they play their first eleven against. We had to compete against their first team – others, including Everton last Sunday, played against reserves.
But the football authorities have always been useless. Fergie makes mince – meat out of them as they are agutless breed.

Meanwhile I reckon West Ham, Wigan and Bolton can only get three points each from now. So if we can get four points we could end up 14th – which means we would get about £2.25M in extra prize money. This would be very useful. If they dont need it then Moxey might want to give the fans reduced ticket prices for a couple of games next year.
The point is we need four points and I would so love to stuff Sunderland – and I bet Mick would too.
See you for the last game party. I’m the one wearing the wolf costume with a very broad grin…..if you find me sleeping it off in the middle of the road please wake me and direct me back to London.

Im all for a 25 man squad which includes 8 homegrown players.
It would suit the wolves to a tee and level the playing field. It should also get more english players involved in the first eleven.
Stops the Arsenals of this world buying their success.

well apparently our manager is richard scudamore because i know mccarthy isnt aloud to make changes. Im glad were doing this because finally the littler club is making a stand and should leave the premier league and the fa red faced yet again

If Ferguson managed a team like Wolves, his head would have exploded by now! The less established teams ALWAYS get a raw deal in this league… On one level it’s fair because all the lower placed teams get shafted the same!

this is a disgrace to the league and football in general, whats the point of having a squad if you cant use them?
man utd allways play there reserves in cup competitions how do they get away with it? they lost to everton last year in the fa cup semi final because they played there reserves.
cant believe fulham have got away with it if we got punished for it thats not fair at all.
seems its fair for the top premier clubs to rest there players ahead of a big game, i.e champs league, europa, fa cups etc. Yet when the little clubs have a massive league game coming up they cant do the same to, what a disgrace.

Only Manager should decide who his best team is. On transfer rumours Id rather take Berras mate Jose Goncalves quality centre half available on a free from Hearts rather than Bikey/Zayette
Report abuse
On transfer rumours I hope the E&S has got it wrong:-
Dindane yes
Tommy Smith No
Richard Hughes No
Danny Fox Maybe
Wade Elliot Ok but too old
Andre Bikey? We can do better
If we are to sign 3 or 4 players in the summer they have to improve the squad, not just add to it. Looking forward to the next two match with no pressure on us. Hope Ebanks get to finish the season well and go into next season on a high. UTW.

The Premier League board shows favouritism to the bigger clubs within the league. There are many cases of teams fielding weakend sides and they basically thought Wolves will go down anyway, so let’s make them an example. Nobody knows the team better than the manager, and it’s up to him to meet his target set by the board. At the end of the day he takes the flak and he’ll get the sack when it goes wrong. Who decides what a weakend team is anyway. Does resting Wayne Rodney count as a weakend team. The rules need to be fully documented and made public. The PL need to sort it out before the start of next season. Mick has effictively shown two fingers to the PL and done what he set out to do by choosing his team and keeping the Wolves where we belong. I’m personally up for home grown players but you can bet when the likes of Arsenal invenst in kids of 12 and 13 from Europe, they will qualify on time based in England. Home grown to me is a player that can represent England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland by birth or parentage. The big clubs will get around the rules somehow though. Rant Over.
Best league in he world – ask the likes of the clubs that have gone into administration. The PL need to look at the Bundesliga to see how things are done properly.

Sir Lupi – I like the idea of the homegrown players apart from the fact that they dont have to be homegrown. Spending 3 seasons in the english leagues doesnt count as homegrown in my oppinion, and the bigger clubs arent going to be affected too much as they can loan their foreigners out to other clubs to get them eligible to play for them.
I hope they introduce a true homegrown player rule, where you have to have at least 5 british players in your first team squad. It would never happen though, as teams like aresnal would be in serious trouble, and wenger wouldnt be very happy about that. We all know its the big teams that control the FA, and whatever they say goes. Thats what got us fined in the first place.
