Tamas set for permanent Albion deal
Tuesday 27th April 2010, 11:15AM BST.
Albion defender Gabriel Tamas is poised to complete an £800,000 permanent switch to the Hawthorns.
The on-loan Romania international defender is ready to commit his future to the Baggies, after they told his agent they want to extend his stay with the Baggies.
Tamas, after scoring in last night’s 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace that took the team to a new club record of 90 points. described the news as “a dream come true” and looked forward to playing in the Premier League.
He said: “Next season I will be at West Brom. I have signed a contract and I don’t know for sure if they are going to buy me but I think they will.
“My agent received a piece of paper saying they are going to buy me, so hopefully I’ll be at West Brom. When I first came here I said I wanted to play in the Premier League with the club, so it’s like a dream come true.
“It was my goal when I came here. I wanted to speak on the pitch and not outside the pitch. All professionals must speak on the pitch and not outside of it and our goal was promotion with West Brom and now we are promoted.
“I am very happy. It is the best league in the world and it will be good to see what happens.
“I watched a lot of Premier League matches and I love it.”
The 26-year-old arrived in January from Auxerre after a nomadic career that has included spells in Russia, Spain and France as well as his native Romania.
The Baggies negotiated an option to make the loan into a permanent contract for £800,000 and Tamas has agreed a three-year contract.
Tamas has settled well in England and scored his second goal of the season last night to earn his side a point.
He said: “I am happy because I scored but I am also happy when one of my colleagues scores. I am happy we scored quickly after them, managed to keep going after that and get a point.
“It was a little bit hard. The tackles were a bit hard and maybe the referee could have done more, but I don’t want to speak any more about that.
“We are glad because we didn’t lose. It was a bit of a week game for us but we didn’t lose.”
