Big investment to continue for Wolves

Big investment to continue for Wolves

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has revealed big investment will continue to restore the club to its former glories long term.

That means keeping star striker Kevin Doyle and attracting three or four quality players – Wolves would welcome the return of Robbie Keane at the right price – to join him this summer.

Several names including Keane, Scunthorpe’s 19-goal Gary Hooper, Bristol City’s £3m-rated marksman Nicky Maynard and Middlesbrough wideman Gary O’Neil have been linked to Molineux.

Moxey said: “We have to strengthen the squad and we will continue to invest in the team along the lines which we have adhered to.

“But we must stress it is part of a long term plan to restore the club back to its former glories of the 1950′s, when we were challenging for regularly for domestic and European honours.

“That will take a lot of time, but what it will mean is continuing to invest in the squad and certainly trying to keep our very best players.”

Moxey believes promoted teams Newcastle and Albion will invest heavily and feels whoever joins them will be stronger than Hull, Burnley and Portsmouth.

He said: “The three teams who come up will be better than the three teams going down, no question about it in the case of Newcastle and Albion.

“It’s a process of evolution and no one should underestimate how difficult it’s going to be next season to stay up.”

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake remains in McCarthy’s plans and will be allowed to prove himself next season.

Moxey said: “We have needed Sylvan’s goals and maybe he needs more time to adjust to this level.”

While major signings are being targeted, the Molineux supremo also hinted at keeping the core of the team.

He said: “I can’t tell you how pivotal players such as Jody, Kevin Doyle, Karl and others have been. Doyle has played single-handedly on his own up front for almost half the season.

“And Kevin Foley has done a great job playing out of position.”

I think i remember seeing Tony Pulis state that no team has ever betterd their first seasons points, in their second season in the premier league, which goes to show how hard the task is going to be. I fear that if we arent comfortably mid table by the end of next season, some of the fans on this site will be calling for Micks head. I will settle for improvements in quality in certain positions and staying up again, maybe with some better attacking performances, especially at home. season 3 i would hope for a mid table finnish.

Well we tried investing during the January transfer window and the result of that was a little dissapointing. However now we are safe for another season I would hope players take notice of us and are willing to come to Molineux. I dont want Wolves going the way of Portsmouth, Hull etc and paying whopping weekly wages that will cripple the club. There is no way that Jimmy Bullard is worth the money he is supposed to be earning at Hull, likewise Robbie Keane’s alleged weekly wage is beyond us in my opinion.

MOXEY few points you make are well documented and I for one agree with these.
My concern along with most wolves fans is that you deleiver your plans.Yes we signed a few players last year but how many get a game?
Doyle as played on his own upfront but how many as he scored?Foley out of position?
so now that you make these points please act upon them for the benefit of the club.I can assure you most wolves fans are not wanting trophies we just want prem stability for a few years then we can start thinking of bigger things. You suggest about the 50′s etc my humble advice is dont deal with todays issues as if you dont deliver the promises you make then you will find your head been called for and rightly so.

One player should never be seen as the missing piece of the jigsaw. Football is a team sport, and we need 5 quality Premiership experienced players across the team to strenghten it.

I dont think Keane will come although it would be phenomenol if we could get him.

Personally I hope we do not invest in players such as Maynard or Hooper during the Summer. Those are the type of players we should only buy if we can obtain the players we really need first, then and only then should we be investing in the future. The present is far more important!
We will need proven, experienced PL Players who will add different dimensions to the current squad, less the ‘deadwood’ which Mick deems surplus to requirements but not by spending stupid money to obtain them as was the case in January according to Jez Moxey!
For me, the likes of Hull’s Hunt, we do NOT want! We are being linked with him again today and after the saga which developed in January when we were rebuffed in no certain manner by Hull and by Hunt, I say let him rot at Hull, we should not be interested any more!
On Robbie Keane, I am not one who believes in going back and should he return there will be a lot of pressure upon his shoulders to repeat what he did the last time he was a Wolves player and for that reason I think it would be best if we looked elsewhere.
There should though be many a PL player who will interest us at the right price, with the right attitude and at the right age but don’t ask me to name any of them, I will leave that to Mick and his team.
Looking ahead to our next game, I hope Mick picks a team to play attacking football, changes the formation from 4-5-1 now that we are safe from relegation, plays a more fluid game and score a few goals. The lads would enjoy being able to play more freely I’m sure and wouldn’t we like to see our lads banging a few in instead of defending all the time?
    Up the Wolves!

Hooper, Maynard 100% no’s we have enough championship players we need Premier League Players. The only two i would gamble on would be Ledley and Beckford.

The three teams coming up are no world beaters
apart from newcastle who may have an advantage in terms of following they are not going to invest any heavier we need to start on the correct footing next season by buying quality andplaying players in there favoured positions. We are only 2points better off then the last time we came up,that season we invested peanuts we got relegated due to the poor start. This year teams like bolton, wigan and west ham started poorly and got sucked into the relegation dogfight we need to avoid another poor start.so prepare accordingly and lets go for the jugular earl part of the season.

Jez, ive said it before and will say it again, ‘YOU’ should be a MP, as YOU are the ‘MASTER of SPIN’. I sat inside the ground listening to you telling Paul Franks and Mark Regan,WM that Wolves would NOT make the same mistakes again, and that YOU would be buying PL players with PL expierence, and that YOU would have to pay these PL players higher wages, than what we are paying our current squad. Therefore their wouldn’t be a ‘Wage-Structure’ at Wolves next season. Suprise Suprise the ‘Early Bird’ tickets followed, then a short while after the ‘EB’ came out,YOU made statement saying WE wont be held to ransome and wont be paying High Transfer Fees, and we wont be paying High wages as we have a ‘Wage-Structure’ in the club, and WE wont break it?. So forgive me if i dont ‘TRUST’ a word YOU say on your comments above.Jez ‘DONT TREAT US FANS AS IDIOTS’,we deserve more RESPECT than coming out with those comments. How many PL players ‘did WE sign’ for this season?. And before reaching the giddy heights of the 50′s lets just ‘TRY’ and reach the heights of the 70s-80s first, that would be a more realistic position for Wolves in the next 2-4yrs. But YES we must be looking to invest about £25m-35m in 4-5 Quailty PL players NOT Maynard/Hooper? we already have them types in our squad NOW. UTW

Seeing as you have been wrong on so many occasions before, why should anyone listen to you ?

So many clubs that have stayed up the first season and then dropped straight back.

We all know we need quality. Keane would bring that (but only if its a “dream” of his to return) but I dont want to get in to names, especially those being speculated – because its just that – speculation.

17, Tomwolf, you need to calm down mate.

When you find out a team like Hull is spending 105% of its income on players wages (yes, 105%!!!) then I don’t think anyone can be critcised for stating that they will not pay over the odds for players in transfer fees and wages.

We all want to see Premier League quality players with Premier League experience at Molineux but not at any price and certainly not to the detriment of the club’s long term financial position.

None of the names mentioned at the start of this article have been named by Moxey. The Express & Star have simply given us some guesses and rumours followed by a statement Moxey has made. And if you think Moxey will decide who we go for in terms of players, you’re bang wrong. I imagine Mick identifies the players, Morgan dictates the budget and Moxey has to do what he can in terms of marrying up the two.

Considering we’re talking about a man who managed to make a profit on Tony Dinning and Neill Collins I think we should let him get on with his job.

There’s nothing wrong in what Jez Moxey is saying, but unfortunately the cynics will respond in the usual negative way to this kind of article.

Moxey is damned if he says something and damned if he does’nt.

The key sentance is: “We have to strengthen the squad and will continue to invest along the lines which we have adhered to”.

That does not mean going for broke, but step by step, year by year improving quality of the playing staff. Clubs that go for broke usually end up that way.

Maybe a cheeky bid for Scott Brown from Celtic and Joseph Yobo who can’t get a game at Everton these days :)

Heard West Ham saying today they would listen to offers for all of there players bar Parker, well i’d take Noble for a couple of mil now!

I would be wary of Stephen Hunt, especially the form Jarvis has been in, but with the uncertainty over Kights future fitness i’d take him and use Jarvis as a utility player on both right and left side.

As gutted as I was not to sign Hunt in January I think Hull should be applauded for the risk of keeping BY FAR their best player, yes it has come back to bite them in the bum but these are the gambles a club has to take. Also Stephen Hunt, let him rot??? If he was a Wolves Player we would have been indebted to his loyalty (something not seen these days)if the boot was on the other foot. Through it all he just got on with it, other players would have thrown a transfer request in – Cast your mind back to a certain T****r when we were relegated from the PL before, Henri Camara, remember him and how he went on strike. Well Stephen Hunt should be more than welcome at Molineux even with his injury, get him fit and get him in – £3 Million, a good PL standard midfielder, who plays 100% from the heart – MM player through and through.
Robbie Keane is not gonna reduce his wages to fit our wage structure – no matter how much you kid yourself he LOVES the club
BUT a seasons long loan is definately on the cards and if it is a success on both halves, and we again remain in the PL, with another season of PL financing and profit hopefully, a permanent move could then be possible.
Other signings I would consider are

    O Hara MID
    Anthony Gardener?? CH
    Steve Finnan LB
    Michael Mancienne (permanent)
    Kevin Doyle ( Improved Contract)

If you look at the amount of money ive suggested for Transfer Fees/Wages, thats about the right amount for the second-season, as we spent £18m this season, so why is £25m-£35m outrageous. The amount im talking about will only get us 4-5 PL players inc transfer fees/Wages. Sidwell also was at Reading when Doyle was (wasn’t Shorey as well?), so they already know each other which always helps when your new to a club. Loan out Vokes and Surman (they are both young) but sell Hof, Big Chris (while he’s still worth something)and Halford. For me the juries still out on the Belgian guy but send the other one(the winger)back also sell castillo (if we didn’t get him on loan).

Moxey yet again beating the ‘sell season tickets drum’

Have to agree with TW in both his posts – and the very predictable remarks given by others

Moxey is reknown for his ‘spin’ and does this as regular as clockwork each season regardless of success or failure

Comparing our development with the 50′s??? Lets get real – we have’nt even got close to the 70′s or part of the 80′s yet!!!

A very very long road before we can even compare!!!

We badly needed 4 to 5 Premier Proven Players at the start of this season and that would maybe have meant Wolves being far higher up the league – and a bonus of £750,000 the higher we finish (each level apparently pays £750k per step up)

Yes MM has done well to keep us up – BUT we achieved this in the last 3 games – Talk about making life harder for ourselves!!!

Blues were runners up last season but still managed to do better – Im not expecting Torres any day soon BUT I DO expect Moxey to match the reasonable fans amongst us expectations in HIS efforts NOT a poor 2nd best EVERY TIME

Doyle was the ONLY real PREM player we managed to deliberately sign – the rest that came good were a bonus BUT How many of the rest really come up to the mark???

Job Done Moxey – NO WAY – You have earned a bonus imv on the back of MM and Co and the fans – Stop talking too much like a 2nd rate bookeeper and start marketing the club and its future to potential signings – less arrogance and more charisma – players dont just want money they want to hear and see a bright future NOT read about a CEO who takes every opportunity to talk about being thrifty – Im sure Mr Moxey doesnt mind taking his bonuses regularly and never tells Mr Morgan that he is prepared to take less for any failures???

Show us dont tell us WE’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE AND THE LESS GULLIBLE AMONGST US WONT BELIEVE YOU UNTIL YOU START THE JOB NEVER MIND PRETENDING YOU GOT IT DONE IN PRE SEASON

As someone said further up this thread these target names are not from Jez Moxey. Far too many posters on this sight find it easy to pick on the men in the suits. Moxey’s dropped a few goolies (who hasn’t), but, he’s also done a lot of good deals and kept the club solvent.
He’s more than played his part.
Commenting on two of the names Keane & Hunt.
I was disappointed Keane chose to go north of the border to play pub football. Spurs have moved on, but some club has to stump up £65k or £70k a week (depending on who you listen to) nto get Keane. Maybe a loan spell with a split on his salary, or even the lot (!) could swing it for Wolves. There will be competition from Villa and others. If the deal is right Matt Murray, Kevin Doyle and other of his Irish pals might swing it for us.
Stephen Hunt. Somebody’s said on here “Let him rot” after the January debacle. FGS we are trying to run a Premiership football club here, these are pro footballers and mercenaries to the core. We have to be a bit tougher than taking offence just because he decided to stay with Hull. Don’t forget he will have been under tremendous pressure from Tangoman and his chairman.
If Merlin the Magician still feels he’s the right man for the job then sign him. Could be a good deal up for grabs too, £35k a week and Hull in The Championship.
Who’s gonna take a risk on Bullard ? £45k week, 32 years old and glass knees.

Tamworth Wolf has it about right with the calibre of player we need and might reasonably be expected to attract, given a bolder transfer policy. No point in pussyfooting around when trying to negotiate with Prem teams/players; we’ll just get used as bargaining tools against other, more realistic bidders. The majority of players we brought last summer have failed to impress; the foreigners found it difficult to adapt, and the Championship level signings were significantly worse than the players we already had at the club. Mick McCarthy has done wonders in keeping us up with essentially a Championship squad/team plus Doyle. If we are to consolidate and improve, we need to get rid of the likes of Halford, Maierhofer, Surman, Vokes, SEB, Iwelumo, Castillo, Mujangi etc, and invest in real quality and experience, not promising Championship players who may or may not develop. We urgently need:
Premiership centre-back with pace( Knight or Curtis Davies),
    Premiership striker/s ( Roberts, Cole, Phillips )
Premiership winger / midfielder ( Hunt, Sidwell, Greening ,Gera,O’Hara, SCOTT PARKER).
We also need another spoiler in midfield,to complement / compete with Henry, and at long last, finally, a CLASS left-back.
Never mind whether they’ve played for the Albion, never mind whether they’ve turned Wolves down in the past.
Get over it,get a life and get ‘em in.
    NOW !!!

this hunt everyone is talking about signing is he related to the guy at hull that gifted us a goal?,the guy who did absolutely nothing to save hulls premiership ?and made the wolves look like idiots when they tried to sign him,?,hopefully not.fortunately i think mick would never have him now, kevin foley is at least as effective as that waste of space, and thats doing kevin a diss service.please buy a quality striker and midfielder and definitely someone who wants to come here

Great stuff Jez, we are not in debt (unlike Albion!)we are a Premier league club with a good squad and we need to remove the deadwood and bring in 3-4 experienced premier league players.

    46. Very good call on Matt Derbyshire, I would definately pursue him if we couldnt get Keano, but the Robbie Keane rumour is not going away and apparently Wolves will match his 65k wages on a 3 year deal.

    Out:
    Maierhoffer
    Halford
    Surman (loan)
    Vokes (loan)
    Hill
    Shackell
    Hennessey (if moneys right)

    In:
    Keano
    Shorey
    Sidwell
    Reo-Coker or Jenas
    Bo Myhill

Get Murray and Kightly back fit and we will be laughing.

What is the obsession with curtis davies, sidwell, reo coker and shorey? im not one of these people who expect us to sign the likes of Keane/Carragher/ronaldo/messi etc-never going to happen- but what have these 4 villa players ever done? Just because they are at a good club, doesnt mean they are prem players. I would prefer to see the likes of Yobo/o hara-players who have played well in the past, but struggle to get in their respective teams as they are playing well. I dont remember ever seeing the 4 villa players do much!

For next season, the maximum squad size is 25 (plus as many U21′s that you can shake a stick at). We currently have a squad of 40 – of which 4 are on loan to us. 9 of these 40 are 21 or under (with only Vokes having more than 10 total appearances) with Bia (if we take up our option to sign him) making it 10.

So, in other words, from our current squad, we need to lose 5 of the 30 players before even adding any. If we’re looking at adding 4 names, we therefore need to lose 9 from the current squad.

So, which nine will be sold/returned to their club?

    1) Castillo
    2) Maierhofer
    3) Ikeme/Murray
    4) Mark Little (depends on the ruling – he turns 22 on 20 August)
    5) Iwelumo
    6) Hill
    7) Guedioura
    8) Halford
    9) Friend

    Thoughts?

Andy, is it actually agreed yet? To answer your question, all ten on your list bar Guedioura. More intrestingly, surely there will be Prem clubs doing the same who have to clear out some pretty tidy players. We should be after them.

54 – I dont know the full rules on squad sizes next season but if that is the case, it shouldnt be too hard to lose 9 players. Also in european competitions, you have to name your squad before the competition, you are allowed to own more players than the limit, but only the squad player you have named can play in the competition.

    Castillo will be going back
    Maierhofer will be sold probably
ikeme and murray wont be sold as i think he will leave the goalkeeping position alone this season, but he may send 1 of them out on loan.
Mark Little will either be sold or loaned depending on if Mick thinks hes good enough or not.
Iwelumo will probably be sold if we can sing a decent striker.
    Hill will be sold.
Guedioura may be signed, dont know for sure as he hasnt been playing recently.
    Halford will be sold.
Friend will be sold or loaned out for the season.
    Surman may be loaned out.

Will make it a little harder when doing our transfer business, but may trouble the other premier league clubs even more. I orignally thought the home grown rule would trouble them though, and have now realised that any player that has played in an english league for 3 years or more counts in the ruling. The rule will not stop teams being full of foregin players as teams like arsenal can byuy a youngster and loan him to a lower league for a few years.

stafford pete – Hunt was injured for the latter part of the season so bit unfair to say he didnt help, it was more he couldnt help them stay up.

As for others who are on his back how would you feel if someone was after Doyle and he turned round and slapped in a request before the run in?? At least he was committed.

Above is the mature view on the situation. The immature view would be, “HA HUNTY, WHERES YOUR PREMIER GONE!!” but im trying real hard not to see it that way lol

    Loyalty? Pah!

Would Hunt really have left Hull for Wolves where he is reputed to be on £35,000 per week to take a (hefty?) drop in salary? Loyalty doesn’t come into it but money certainly does and let’s face it, most footballers are only in it for the money, just ask Carlos Tevez, he knows!

As mentioned Matt Derbyshire would be an good buy, when “Big Sam” sold him on I was wondering what on earth his was playing at having always caught my eye. His touch would certainly enhance Wolves in front of goal though I notice he hasn’t played many games (but does have 1:2 goals/games ratio).

Its great that money is available its great that MM kept us in the Prem,BUT given what MM has brought to the club I dont think the pot of gold is in safe hands to be spent by him.
Again we are looking at lower league players and you have to buy ten to find 1 good one. Keano would be perfect but I dont think we will see him in a gold shirt again.

At least two Central Defenders needed, One left back, One quality Striker and one winger.

And well done Moxey you take some stick but you havent put us in the same situation as lots of clubs (skint and nearly out of business).

Corfuwolves, Maybe you were not around in the fifties but if my memory serves me correctly a large number of players during that wonderful period were either local and playing in lower leagues, or school leavers as was a certain William Wright. Cullis and Gardener were just top class at judging younger and less obvious talent and having signed them, got 110% out of them. They also had youngsters playing at nursery clubs around the country, Peter Broadbent came from Dover and I cannot recall many ‘Names’ being signed. My old mate Eddie Clamp was a coal miner from Swadlingcoat, what I wouldn’t give for a few like him right now.

Names will be thrown about but they are Red Herrings, detracting other clubs from the players they are seriously looking at. The policy now is correct, buy ‘em young and bring ‘em on.

One lad MM should consider is Baldock from MK Dons, totally wasted by Ince but would be a really good partner for Doyle. This kid could be another Steve Bull, he needs better coaching and the opportunity to shine and is certainly one for the future. He would be affordable but other clubs are seriously looking.

    The Usual Suspects

Reading the following comments from Mr Moxey Imv I dont think we will be looking to bring in more than 1 or 2 (probably 1) of Doyle’s quality:

Smith had talks at Wolves last summer but the club would not pay his demands.

And I understand any thoughts about attracting Robbie Keane for a Molineux reunion are fanciful, with the 29-year-old unwilling to drop to the bottom ‘mini-league’ Wolves will be competing in.

Wolves, who inquired about taking Keane on loan in January, would now also be cagey about splashing out so much on a player they are not convinced is a ‘best-fit’ for Doyle as a partner.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “Just because we went for a player in January doesn’t mean we’re going to go for that player in the summer.”

But the club are keen to attract one or two Doyle-like “marquee” signings.

“I don’t have any negative thoughts at all about losing Kevin,” said boss Mick McCarthy.

“He’s a good player and we will be looking at other players who other clubs will be thinking are their best players to strengthen the squad.”

Moxey added: “Very good players cost lots of money but it’s more a question of whether you can get the good players you want and they are very expensive.

“People were surprised when Kevin Doyle came with the fee and the wages but we would certainly like to sign one or two quality signings in the summer.

“The players have achieved the target of staying up – why would they not want to be here to achieve the next target?”

Furthermore, Does Moxey not realise that we gained Prem status in the LAST 3 games and that the squad needs several players being sold off and 4 or 5 better quality (with Prem experience) being brought in??? We need to aim to be in the mid table teams and have to tweak the squad accordingly

And looking at the comments on Smith and wages Imv the Robbie Keane episode is nothing more than ‘spin’ from the club and Moxey

The current squad, tactics (due to lack of quality) and serious lack of goals will guarantee us another relegation battle – and imv next season will be much tougher than this!

Doyle sums it up in his article:

But Doyle is desperate to avoid the complacency that set in during his time at Reading in their second season, after confounding the Premier League by finishing eighth in their first season.

He said: “I remember with Reading there was probably a bit of relaxation going into that second season – only with little things, but little things that made a big difference.

“We probably didn’t strengthen like we should have. It was almost the same team from winning the Championship and then going down.”

And if we dont history could well repeat itself!!! 4 to 5 Quality Prem Proven and ship out some of the Championship players!!!

No Excuses Mr Moxey – Just Do It!

    We hope for better
