Mick’s the best in 30 years for Jez
Monday 26th April 2010, 12:00PM BST.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey has hailed manager Mick McCarthy the club’s best in 30 years and backed him to win a major trophy after clinching survival.
McCarthy is the fourth boss in Moxey’s 10 years at Molineux, but he insisted he has not employed a better one after Premier League safety was assured following Liverpool’s 4-0 win at Burnley yesterday.
Moxey said: “Mick has got to be the best Wolves manager in 30 years. He’s as good as we’ve had in recent times. He’s done something that no other manager here has achieved in winning a title and keeping us in the Premier League.
“Let’s hope he can go on and win a major trophy for us – that’s our aim, to re-establish this club as a major force in the land. People will say it’s a pipe dream but if we look at what Everton have done.
“Why can’t he? He’s done a great job and he will be here a long time. We are happy with him and he is happy with us.
“Mick has done a magnificent job when many people were saying he couldn’t manage in the Premier League. This is a major achievement for this football club.”
Moxey, who has e-mailed all staff at the club to thank and congratulate them, also believes McCarthy’s style of management is perfect for the young and hungry team assembled.
The chief executive said: “I think he has been the ideal leader for this group of players.
“His calmness and confidence in the players has created the best environment for them to flourish and they have got better and better as the season has gone on.”
Moxey has pledged Wolves will continue improving the squad this summer.
He said: “We will carry on trying to build this team and trying to get it better year on year.”
With each Premier League place carrying an additional £750,000 in prize money, Moxey has now urged the team to finish the season with a flourish.
He said: “We’re thrilled but the season hasn’t finished yet and we’d love to finish above Bolton in 14th spot.”
The Molineux supremo also acknowledged the pitch invasion which followed Saturday’s game was good-natured.
He said: “The fans wanted something to celebrate and we gave them something.
“Hopefully no one was injured and we’re pleased they’re so happy to have seen us stay up.”

When did Everton win a major trophy in the Premier League era?
Also, I think John Barnwell was a significantly better manager – and actually won a major trophy for WWFC. Since he was still with Wolves at the start of 1982, I make that less than 30 years ago.

From the man who begged Glenn Hoddle to stay with us…..

Be nice to know Steve Morgans thoughts ? and plans?
Well done to all at the club, a remarkable achievement.

Whats Moxey on about?I agree that John Barnwell was a top manager,I also believe Dave Jones should have stayed but we all have our favourites and this argument could go on and on.Like Andy No.2 says Moxey was the one who wanted to keep Hoddle.Shut up Moxey and let Mick do the buying and even I might get to be a McCarthy fan.

well done mick and the lads amazing! all the credit goes to mick never liked jez and morgan dont seem like he wants to spend in the summer i reckon he will give us 10 million and make mick sell all our fringe players for several million
and when have everton won major tropheys jez! and why cant we ? for one you need to start spending the money you think fulham everton etc are where they are for spening the odd few million i look forward to the summer to see who we buy but i have no faith in morgan or jez so im not going to get my hopes up we all no how fat jez likes to keep his money for his pies!

And yet idiots like ‘Pedantic Wolf’ still post on such message boards. Please do us all a favour and leave our great club alone.
Instead of airing your voice at a time when everyone is celebrating staying up, why don’t you record what your saying on your phone, and listen to yourself over and over again in bed at night time.
I for one, and many others, couldn’t care what people like yourself have to say.
We have a cracking club, a cracking set of supporters, a team full of passionate players, and money to spend in the summer.
What’s to moan about …
Report abuse
Well said Jez,Super Mick has done a great job and so have all his coaching staff.Im sure there will be a few do gooders who will still moan but us real fans know what a superb job he has done.
Now lets kick on and really establish ourself as a premier league club.
Well done to everyone connected with the club, ive always been proud to support the wolves but know more than ever!!!!!!!!

I’ve always found McCarthy to be committed and honest in his approach and for that reason he is up there with the pick of the bunch. We all have favourites though and for me it will always be Graham Turner. UTW

Like thousands of others I’d like to say well done to everyone at the club. Job done for Season One.
I’m not MM’s greatest fan, but what he lacks in tactical savvy, he seems to compensate for with good man-management. Big season next year but they’ve earned a break so enjoy it lads.
To those who posted earlier. Enought with the Moxey hating. I know he’s made mistakes but since he’s taken the reigns we’ve improved and are extremely secure financially. I presume he’s been interviewed for this story and has given his opinion. I don’t agree with his ‘best manager in 30 years’ comment but give the bloke a break!
For once i think its about time we laid off Moxey. Fair play for not condeming the pitch invasion. He seems as pleased as the fans that we have done so well in the last two seasons. Our club is in a better state than most and alot of that is down to the man everyone loves to hate.
MM done a great job and deserves credit but i would hail Graham Turner who saved us from oblivion and gave us the platform to build on.Without which we would still be watching lower league or non league football.

OK tom- jez hasn’t spent any money, well being has you are the one in the know – tell us all how much we have spent this season on Players,Wages + all the other add on’s – like for staying up, crowd bonus’s etc, etc.

1. I would like to point out that Everton won the F.A Cup in 1995 beating Man United.
Not sure why Jez is comparing us to Everton though as they have been established in the top flight for decades as we have not.
Lets firmly keep our feet on the ground as next year will be tougher, Moxey keep to your word if you want sucess you and Morgan must not penny pinch and Let MM buy quality and pay wages that will attract excellent premier league players to the club.
Mancienne for another year’s loan or hopefully we can sign him, a target man is essential, a left back, centre half, midfielder and another winger.
Congrats to everyone at Wolves on staying up
Report abuse
i believe graham turner was a better manger but i am a big mick mcCarthy fan but everyone should get behind the team now and finished the season in style and bring on next season which is going to be a brillant season for all the football fans in the west midlands area for all the local derbys in the premiership.

well done to everyone ,we are looking at home in the prem now.
and thanks jez i feel better knowing someone who appears to be such an authority as you on football has given us the benefit of your expertise, did you notice one or two of micks signings for the prem such as the hoff, halford, surs, new bloke, mujangi, milijas, castillos, didnt start?
lets hope we can sign 2 or 3 quality players for the first team next year,

Nothing to debate time to say well done to Mick, the team and everybody at the Mol. Keep the faith and please please stop moaning

some of you are never happy!! Its terrible.
I admite that Mox isnt everyones cup of tea but why cant we just enjoy this time? at the start of the season if we were safe with two games left we would of all jumped at it.
Two or three good signings in the summer.

HOW CAN PEOPLE STILL BE MOANING???? We’ve secured our survival with 2 games to go. Which is better than we all thought. We haven’t scraped though, we survived comfortably and still people just cant enjoy it. Hats off to ya Mick I’ll agree with Jez and say you ARE the best manager we’ve had in 30 years. Give it another 30 and you’ll have a stand named after ya

The fact is that since Mick’s arrival the team has improved season on season and really that is the way forward these days unless you want to spend hundreds of millions of pounds and risk having it all implode when the the club goes bust and/or the owner gets bored. Not all of Mick’s signings have worked but this applies to every single manager you can think of, and he has been successful in the past at moving players on when neccessary. We needed a big squad this season in case we were relegated and lost some of our better players, so that wholesale rebuilding wouldnt be forced upon us. To survive has been a significant achievement and I’m sure that the club will want to improve on that next year by purchasing players who will improve the team and not just the squad. Add to that the fact that we are one of only a handful of solvent clubs in the 4 divisions, its a pretty good time to be a Wolves fan. I think the moaners and whingers need to be a bit more realistic and enjoy the ride.
Gotta love your comments No.6.

Some people will never ever be happy, even if we won the CL people would still find something to moan about. If you can’t be a MM fan now than you’ll never be one. Best thing to do is just leave and go and support another club and leave us ‘loyal’ fans to enjoy the rest of the season and look forward to the next. Super Mick McMarthy
Report abuse
congrats to all at wolves for achieving premiership survival..
hope morgan sticks with his ground improvement plans to get a larger capacity..
Congratulations to all, (well except Moxey).
But football never stands still and let’s hope plans are already being put in place to spend what’s required to bring in some real Premier league quality. We need at least four or five quality players to avoid the “difficult second season” scenario. For some reason I will get slaughtered for suggesting we do our best to bring Robbie Keane back, but we need the kind of guile in the team.
On another note, I have it on very good authority that as soon as the last home game has been played, the pitch will be torn up, and in true Barcelona style, lowered to put in extra seating, how much seating I don’t know, but it will bring the fans closer to the pitch which will no doubt improve the atmosphere!

How times change. At the start of March, anyone who remotely suggested that we could stay up was branded a happy clapper and told to refrain from commenting on this site. Now, our top flight status guaranteed, and anyone who remotely has a gripe, is told he’s a moaner and should stay away.
No. 6 – why should Pedantic Wolf stay away from this club, as you so eloquently put it, for stating what is factually correct?

I agree Mick’s that the best in the last 30 years! He inherited a very weak side & had to rebuild from scratch. Built the infamous young & hungry squad on a very low budget & soon became champions. Now he’s convincingly kept them up against all the odds. Hoepfully the 3M’s will invest wisely and consolidate our Premier League status on a realistic, sustainable budget.
Close contenders were John Barnwell…Got us 6th & won the League Cup when it was still worth winning, BUT his signings nearly bancrupt the club. Not entirely his fault due to interest rates & the building of the new stand, but (attempting) swapping John Richards for Joe Gallagher was unforgivable.
Graham Turner. 4th to 3rd to 2nd Division promotions, plus the Sherpa Van trophy was a fantastic achievement, all on a tiny budget. BUT when given money to spend he struggled to take us any further. I wore my Turner must STAY reversible badge with pride!
Dave Jones. Inherited a good side. Got us up, nearly kept us up. Could have been our greatest manager but when he lost key players to injury the club unfairly assuming there was no possible way we could stay up & left him out in the cold. He got very little to spend & were inevitably relegated, & he was never given a chance to get us back up.

Then we would not need defensive midfielders and be more “fluid”.

Congratulations to Mick and every single member of the squad!
And now to the knockers!
Can any of the Jez knockers put in writing exactly what it is he has done wrong?
I love this club with a passion! A hopefully will do for many years to come, however if Jez were to act the way some of our fans would wish, ie, go spend money we dont have, then we will be the next Portsmouth of the premier league! Ok there is no doubt money in the coffers but we must spend it well so as to build gradually on what we have. Good young players as Mick has been bringing to the club are key! We have as a club wasted far to much money on has beens! And now with the 3 M’s are finally moving in the right direction.
Once again, thanks to Mick and the lads, im so looking forward to next season!

We the fans may never agree on the best manager, a fact now its harder to achieve success in the last decade than ever before. Its down to money! Those who break the financial law are being found out. Pompey & Hull for two. Shame the bigger clubs are not being punished for being highly in debt. Thanks jez for not going down that road. None of us will ever agree with some of your decisions, but were not going to if your doing your job correctly.

To anyone who criticises Mick McCarthy I have but two words – Freddie Eastwood!

Just watched “The Big Match” DVD – Excellent, but I think some fans think we are now where we were back in the 70′s with Dougan and Richards playing for us!
It has been a long torturous route back to where we are now, and there is still some way to go, but I belive McCarthy can do it. Some people have poor short memories, but very good long ones, I think!
I would say that most of us had our doubts at various stages of the season, but Mick and the lads dealt with it better than we did! We can push on from this and even if we go down NEXT season we will be more in Newcastle’s position rather than Charlton’s..
I really believe we have turned a corner in our history, thanks to Mick McCarthy, and if any of you can’t see that I suggest you buy the aformentioned DVD and live in the (distant) past, and leave the future to us realists!!

Mick Mc is by far and away the best manager in 30 years. Barnwell fell away after 1980 due to the Bhatti Brother saga.
With Jez, Morgan and Mick we have the best leadership team in the premier league.
I really believe in them. ANd these are really exciting times.
Some fans have been annoying me over the last few seasons with there endless ramblings about how poor Mick is.
Micks tactics have been questioned.
Mick was the maestro who produced the 451 formation that kept us up. He has developed Foley into a right wing position that is not natural to him. Mancienne into a midfieler and Ward into a left back.
That is superb man management and superb tactical knowhow.
There is no critisism of Mick that holds water for long. And the sooner you bashers realise this the sooner you will get excited about the future of this great club.
Support Mick, because he is the best. And if he goes i for one will be devastated.

Well said jez!! Mick is a God!! and has done a great job in keeping us up it all stems from his brilliant signings of Hannemann zubar and especially Kevin Doyle at the start of the season the only thing is i look abit like kevin doyle but a much fatter version and keep getting stick at the home games shame on you wolves fans yours Gavlar Caddick

I don’t want to get involved in the “who was the best manager debate”, but I do want to congratulate MM, the team and everyone at Wolves on a wonderful achievement -and for giving us supporters a great start to the Summer.
Im not a big admirer of MM, i think he’s a very stubborn man, who only listens to the ‘reflection’ he see’s in the ‘Mirror’. I also think he plays his ‘favourites’ anywhere in the team so long as they get a game. But i will admit he’s done better than i thought he was going too, yes he’s rode his luck at times, other teams results have helped aswell. But most of the ‘Players’ seem 100% behind him, some who aren’t either leave or rot in the reserves. I think he did a Top Class job getting us up, and an even better one keeping us in the PL ( hardest league in the world ). I do have one concern tho and its can he encourage ‘Top Players’ to come to Wolves and can he ‘Manage’ them too ?. As he always seems to go for ‘young and hungry’ players who dont answer him back?, which i dont have a problem with, but you must asked yourselves do you think he can ‘get / manage’ Top Players ?. UTW

Well Done all, 3Ms, especially MM and of course the players.
Wish people would just keep off 3Ms backs their ALL doing the best for this club, no matter what you think.
AND to make myself even more unpopular with the door knobs who post on here, congratulations to Stephen Ward on his call up to EIRE summer camp/ squad with Foley to – Long Overdue. Saturday proved that as a SQUAD Player he should have a future at WWFC, he and Dave Jones were two of a few who didnt look to tired or nervous, which ever it was.
BUT job done well done SEB!!!

Congratulations to everybody at the club who have played there part.right from the board to the management team and the supporters who have got behind our boys even when performances were not great,we have to be realistic about next season as staying up must be the first goal.lets not get carried away if we finish twelve or thirteenth it will an improvement.30 million on three players, left back, central midfield, striker.that will do as long as we don’t get rid of to many of the ones that kept us up.well done my babbies.
Well done everybody, now let’s step up a level and see if we can get in amongst the Evertons, Sunderlands and Blackburns.
Based on this season it’ll take 3 or 4 class players, who may now see Wolves as a club worth joining and not relegation fodder.
Problem is a lot of the better players want European football so a player like (let’s say) John Carew, nearly out of contract, would be difficult to pull.
I thought we played poorly against Blackburn and for those doubters, on Saturday you could clearly see how much we missed Karl Henry holding things together in midfield. Mancienne wasnt on his game, maybe it was that twisted ankle he appeared to get. Milijas ? Oh dear how embarrassing. My missus is faster than him and she’s carrying the shopping. The way he was turned in the RB zone was straight off the Sunday morning Parks league. I really don’t see what MM and TC can do with him. Hope I’m wrong.
Not to finish negative, MM has masterminded a great turnaround with 4-5-1 and he clearly has created a wonderful team spirit. Since Cullis & McGarry’s great teams, only Graham Turner has matched that, but, poor old Graham couldn’t get us out of Division 2.
Both have made us proud and no mistake.

1. Pedantic Wolf
Everton won the FA Cup in 1995, but I think Moxey is thinking more in terms of them being permanently in the top division – and they’ve won a bundle of major trophies since we last bagged one in 1980.
As for John Barnwell – you can certainly make a case for him being a fine Manager. On the other hand, he inherited a team that was already in the top division, and I believe he was allowed to buy the most expensive footballer in England at the time – Andy Gary ? So we won the League Cup, and within 2 years he resigned because we were bottom of the table.
If I was making the case for Mick, I’d say he took a second-tier club and made it top-tier, whereas John Barnwell took a top-tier club and made it second-tier.
But we all have our opinions, hey ?

The 3 M’s have done it their way and bloody good luck to them. To the whingers and the ‘half empty’ brigade – do grow up.
This team more than any I have known have respected the fans by giving 100% every game and they deserve another go – as we fans do.
The club is financially stable and Mick knows that raw enthusiasm will not keep us up next year. The team has improved with only six of its 17 defeats coming in 2010 but we all lnow real class is needed and I bet the 3M’s will do their very best to get it in. I believe Sylvan and Kites will be successful
I proud to bits with the team, the management and most of the fans. Lets get six more points and party like crazy after the Sunderland game.

I read in Saturday night’s E & S , that MM say’s he wants to buy ‘solid, organised types’ to help us stay up again next season. So i expect we will look to sign these types of players.
1/2.Shorey/Fox ( Either )
3.Carragher
4.Michael Brown ( Either )
5.Jamie O’Hara
6.Hunt
7.Fuller
All the above players are ‘solid and organised’ types who work for 90mins, what MM wants to get in next season. These wouldn’t cost us much over £20M-£25M. For 5 of them. UTW

Minor miracle by the players led by MM in maintaining Wolves’ Premiership status. I could only see relegation after the January transfer window “strengthening”.
Despite his share of transfer market disappointments and some selection querks, MM has motivated all these players throughout, despite a lack of level playing field financially, and injuries to key players.
It certainly feels like a promotion after the progress since the turn of the year. The West Ham performance was a coming of age for the side. 3 great years out of 4 for the club delivered with MM. He’ll do for me.
46 & 63, I have to disagree with you, I think the team showed much more forward movement without Henry, and his place /position in the team needs sorting for next season.
So do the positions of Berra & Craddock, Berra is slow and plays too much like a Rugby player, Craddock for all his excellent play this year will not last another season in this league.

Get yer hair cut, Moxey!
Well done to all concerned- far exceeded my own expectations of several months ago.
No letting up though- a bench mark of survival and steady progression over a 5 year period should now be the minimum requirement.
Bolton, Blackburn, West Ham, Wigan, Fulham,-surely we are capable of emulating their achievements in this respect? Time will tell; the club can start by aiming somewhat higher than last summer’s modest investments.

Well done Wolves. A nail biting season is over and we’re safe with two games to go.
Throughout the season I kept working on the ’40 points for survival’ principle and in the end we made it with only 35.
What’s even better is we’ve got a guaranteed 6 points next season now the Albi*n have been promoted!
Come on you Wolves!!

Firstly let me add my congratulations to Mick McCarthy and all the playing staff.
I would also like to thank both Steve Morgan and Jez Moxey for running the club on a sound finacial basis. Anybody who thinks it’s a good idea to buy whatever the cost in the hope it brings success should read what has happened at Portsmouth and what is unfolding at Hull.
We have achieved a great deal in the last 3 years and we should be looking at consolidation in the PL with a goal of obtaining a Europa place next season.
Onward and upward.

77, George made over 40 passes alone, don’t remember that many sideways or backwards, so don’t know what you were watching. Berra is not up to it, too many goals have been given away down the middle, and he does I say play more like a Rugby player pulling players back when they have gone past him, too many times around the box.

I have to agree. Elokobi was outstanding again On saturday. I haven’t missed Karl Henry one bit. The team is without doubt better without him. But we do need to strenghten the centre midfield.

I have seriously doubted the tactics during this past season and certainly the lack of goals, however what I have most admired is the manner in which the Manager has conducted himself. He knew well that he would be criticised by many for adopting a defensive formation, especially at home but he took the decision and stuck with and thankfully for all of us, it has worked out. He has handled himself with great dignity and humility during a most difficult campaign and for that alone deserves another season in which we may hopefully establish a permanent position in the EPL.
it would now be a positive and prudent move to employ better coaching staff and concentrate more on youth development.

Mick has done a brilliant job. It might seem that spending more than we have is the right idea but look at Hull, they stayed up first season in the Premier League and now they’re in trouble after trying to build too quickly.
I like the slow and steady approach to building the team and Jez is the right man for that. He will make sure we don’t pay too much for anyone and make sure we aren’t going to be in the situation where we are debt-ridden and lose all of the progress we have made over the past few years.
We’re one of the only teams in the football league without debt and we owe all of that to Moxey and Morgan (and Sir Jack) and luckily we have done so well in winning the title and staying up in our first season in the Premier League all thanks to McCarthy and the rest of the staff/players.
Well done lads, lets look forward to another season of hard work. If we get more players who have that work ethic, I’m sure we’ll be fine!
Come on the Wolves!

According to the Sun newspaper:
Wolves are after Keano again on a season long loan deal similar to what he’s had at Celtic.
Also Robert Green, Matthew Upson and Carlton Cole are all going on the transfer list at West ham.

Lets take a look at the end of next season.
WBA will assume their customary position in the bottom 3.
And as your little mate Terry Baggie says
BOING BOING BOING
The sound OF WBA bouncing up and down between divisions I presume.

agree with 1 and 68, Barnwell did a fantastic job which we often forget.Moxley not being a wolves fan might not know.
39 Golden Blood probably wasnt around at the time and keeps getting his facts wrong. Barnwell signed andy gray with the money we got from selling steve daley to man city 1.5 million i recall. He also signed the likes of emlyn hughes. He resigned after boardroom politics in 1982 before the Bhattis came in. Without Graham Turner Wolves would not have been the club they are now. He helped rebuild this club almost from scratch.
Mick has made mistakes with some of the players he has bought, and some players who have struggled to adapt but he has managed to cope with this and still pick up points and that is the sign of a really good manager.

Hi guys I haven’t posted for quite some time, I’d just like to congratulate all you guys on staying up and say how much I’m looking forward to renewing our rivalry’s next season…… But however can I just take this opportunity to say how deluded I think Jez is, I personally think Dave Jones was a cracking manager for you guys. (Just my humble opinion) and i don’t relise why all the other West Brom fans on here give Karl Henry such a hard time when he does a fantastic job in the centre of the park for you guys. I could go on all night but I have to take my daughter to bed. Good Luck next season and I genuinely hope you stay……. But not at our expense.

John Barnwell won us a cup finished sixth in the top division and took us into europe
Moxey if MM does that then i’d agree but as yet we’re miles off.

We are all obviously delighted that the team has survived and I have been one of Mick’s critics. However, there are still issues which tend to be overlooked.
1 The achievements in the Championship and Premiership have not been all Mick’s doing. He has had good fortune at critical times. We lost important matches at the end of the Championship and the only reason we went up as Champions was because the teams below us also lost. Otherwise we could have been in the playoffs. In addition we would still not be celebrating now if it wasn’t for the work of Liverpool last week.
2 As has been mentioned in this article, his purchasing skills have been less than satisfactory. Others have noted the players introduced who have rarely kicked a ball. At the moment it doesn’t matter too much because we did not pay large sums for them. God help us if he starts spending tens of millions on players who turn out the same as Castillo, Bia and Halford then we will be in trouble.
So in conclusion, yes, the lads have done well and congratulations to them and to Mick. But let’s not kid ourselves, if Mick’s luck deserts him next season with the wages of a playing staff, half of whom do not play, our rejoicings may be short lived.
