Wolves 1 Blackburn 1

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake all but clinched Premier League survival by equalising with his first touch against Blackburn to spark a mass Molineux pitch invasion today.

The substitute headed his first goal in open play this season to end Wolves’ 514-minute Molineux goal drought – and 470 minutes home and away – and cancel out Ryan Nelsen’s 28th minute opener.

Although Hull are practically down after losing 1-0 at home to Sunderland, Wolves’ safety cannot be assured unless Burnley fail to beat Liverpool at Turf Moor tomorrow.

But it did not stop thousands of fans streaming on to the pitch to mob the players.

Hearts were in Wolves’ mouths at the end when former Molineux midfielder Keith Andrews volleyed against the post.

And that was the second time the home side had survived a scare against the woodwork, after Nikola Kalinic headed against the frame in the first-half.

Wolves made their first change in three games, after Matt Jarvis was ruled out with a thigh strain picked up last week. In his place, Stephen Ward returned to the side for his first start in six games.

Ward was involved in the game’s first incident after nine minutes after appearing to clip the heels of Michel Salgado in the area, but replacement referee Mark Clattenburg waved away the protests.

The home side had more possession in the early stages but Blackburn looked the more dangerous, as they looked to catch out the hosts with their more direct style of play.

Rovers almost did just that in the 18th minute when Kalinic headed against the post from Martin Olsson’s cross, with goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann motionless.

Former Albion striker Jason Roberts then floated a glancing header straight at Hahnemann as the game began to descend into a scrappy battle.

The hosts’ first sight of goal didn’t arrive until the 27th minute, when David Jones drilled into the side-netting after his own corner was cleared.

But within a minute, Wolves were behind when Nelsen put Rovers ahead after using his knee to steer in Morten Gamst Pedersen’s corner ahead of Jody Craddock, as Hahnemann appeared to get sucked in to a ruck of players.

Nelsen’s scrappy strike was the first Wolves had conceded in 208 minutes.

The game followed the pattern of the last one at Molineux as Blackburn, like Stoke, opted for an uncompromising approach that saw a poor game develop.

In a bid to go like-for-like, manager Mick McCarthy opted for a bold substitution after just 37 minutes and brought on Chris Iwelumo for Dave Edwards, changing to 4-4-2 in the process.

But the switch did not appear to make much difference as their first effort on goal didn’t come until eight minutes after the break ,when Jones saw a curling free kick scrambled away by goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Seconds later, Craddock volleyed inches over after George Elokobi’s throw was flicked on by Iwelumo.

The scrappy nature of the game was summed up when Iwelumo failed to get a shot in, after Robinson fumbled a huge Elokobi throw.

Former Wolves midfielder Keith Andrews was given a mixed reception on his return to Molineux and tried to make his detractors pay, with a vicious shot that flew inches over.

Wolves found attacks hard to come by and penetration even harder as they struggled to keep the ball, with several players strangely below par.

Kevin Doyle sent a free header comfortably over from a Jones corner but Rovers still looked dangerous on the break and gave a warning with a fierce angled volley by Pedersen, which luckily for Wolves flew straight at Hahnemann.

Seconds earlier, Ebanks-Blake replaced Kevin Foley and within two minutes headed the vital goal that looks like ensuring Premier League survival.

Wow and well done all at WWFC. Proud of the fight shown to secure Prem survival. Let´s see some sensible investment before the beginning of the next campaign. No more B team players and hopefuls, Mick. Time to show how much of a good manager you really are. No more nail biting and no goalscoring. We won´t have such a chance to wing it next time round.

    Well done Mick…job done!

Burnley have to win ALL their games to get above the points we already have.

    Liverpool (H), Blues (A) & Spurs (H)

    Never going to happen!

I’m delighted for SEB. The occasion & timing was perfect for his comeback goal.

SEB deserves a second chance. He lost fitness & confidence, but not ability. I’d love him to play for us next season…& I think he’ll do fine in the Premier League. We never saw the ‘old’ SEB play in the Premier League, just a shadow of himself that would have failed to score in ANY league. I don’t agree that he can’t step up to a Premier League standard.

Everyone started the season badly, which is half the reason SEB never scored anyway. Most were dropped & have forced their way back and done exceptionally. Zubar, Mancienne & Jarvis in particular. Now its time for SEB’s second chance.

Now we are safe, which will be official tomorrow, lets play 4-4-2 and see what SEB & Milijas both can really do.

Well done to all the team and Mick, massive result today. thought the Wolves fans were superb. All credit to the Manager and Morgan for sticking by him in the dark days.

That said, I would liked to have had a more attacking side today as I thought this was a match we could win.

There were good individual performances and I think big George was the pick of them, Marcus made two crucial saves near the end, after having a mixed game.

I was pleased that Mick tried to change things after we went behind, and he used the subs well, I am so pleased for SEB and hope we see the best of him next season now he is injury free.

We can now look forward to the next 2 games where hopefully we can play attacking football, and to next season to some better signings than we made last year.

Special mention to the stars of 50 Years ago, who I am sure enjoyed today like everyone else.

Well it didnt look good for us until MM changed it about, i felt sorry for Edwards he had run his socks off for 35min,i didnt think he was the man to come off. I would have taken Foley off myself, again like some of us have said on here i think we set up with a negative line up, i thought against these types of teams we need to play a more attacking formation. We looked void of ideas except for Jones, i was pleased when Iwelumo come on it proves my point he won loads of flick-on’s for Doyle, and the others,we looked a far better team with more of a threat up front, it works well for Villa playing the big man and the rest feeding off him.I thought Elokobi had a sound match, he’s improving with every game, yes we still need a LB, but more so as cover. But 1-2 Wingers are a MUST for next season who can actually play on the wings NOT RB/LB/CF. And how pleasing was it for SEB to come on and score with his first touch of the ball, that will have his confidence a huge boost, some people on here have been calling him all kind of things, but you dont go from scoring 50 goals in two seasons to being a donkey, ‘Eastwood’s Rubbish and myself’ have said all along HE didnt get a pre-season training under his belt and thats why he’s struggled all season and looked sluggish, but he showed you what he can do given the right service, just support him and i bet we will see a far better and far FITTER player. I was also impressed with Milijas too when he came on, we looked a better team when we had more flair/attacking players on the pitch. Save Mancienne and Foley for when we play the Man Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal etc, its horses for courses in football. UTW

Amazingly we’re not even safe yet considering the pitch invasion today. IF Burnley beats L’pool they might get something goin’ !? Pompey will be no roll over so last game could be decisive.
But I don’t think so – I can’t see us not picking up the ONE point and I realy can’t see Burnley winning 3 games more..
It’s time to hail MM and the team for a job well done. Our only purpose this year was survival and we might even do that comfortably by winning the last 2 games !?
Good to see that MM was ready to switch tactics when we were 1 down. Good perfomance by all today. Elokobi has been brilliant for the last 2 games considering the Stoke-game.
Now it’s the time for us all to realize the real commitment from Mr. Morgan ! Why would next year in PL be any different from this one. Look at Wigan – over 5 years in the PL and still struggling.
WBA and Newcastle seems like better teams than the ones going down so PL will probably be stronger again. We are gonna spend big to be comfortable in this league. So now Mr. Morgan can show what he is all about. Surely if you put in a bid for big4 club you will have an idea of what spendings coube ld take to bring you further – so now we need to see this vision splashed out here.
I will not suggest any players besides hoping that we keep Milijas and Ebanks-Blake (great goal today !). They could adapt and be very useful next time arond. After all this is a great night – we are certainly here to stay.

Congratulations Mick, you’ve bored us to safety. Since West Ham we’ve not even attempted to try and win a game. I really hope that changes next season because 11 goals in 18 home matches is unforgivable.

Remember, Wolves fans, before you have a go at me, throughout the history of our club we have been renowned for playing exciting, attacking football. Do you really want us to be compared to Stoke City?

I heard Micky Quinn say on Talk Sport that he would rather watch Wigan draw 0-0 that watch Wolves draw 0-0, because at least they were trying to win the match.

So while I’m delighted that we’ve stayed up, unfortunately it looks as though Mick and clipboard are here to stay, I just hope that over the summer Mick realises that football is about entertainment, our fans deserve nothing less.

With a monicker like Ebanks-Blake, his dad surely would have told him……..”Son, there´ll always be a mountain you´ll have to climb.” Who´d have given odds he´d be the hero of the Mol tonight? But he did it. Our one goal wonder doubled his tally for the season and we really should be thankful. I know for one that I am!

How far have the Wanderers come to date? A glensight further than when we did when we had Hod on our side. That´s for sure.

Don´t get me wrong, I don´t care for the style, nor the tactics invoved but the M´n´M attitude is clearly on the up. To attract good players you have to sell hope, glory and medals. They have to do it on the pitch. The M´n´M factor has to woo the crowd to pay. In short a fairy tale in which interests persist and flourish or wane and dwindle. So it goes.
The Spanish model is the best. Fans appoint the chairman and his board every four years. In this way “more than just a club” has far more reaching implications.
Well done Sylvan for your goal today. To me you justify the bosses faith and for every drip of sweat you deserve the lolly you´ve earned this season.
Sensational outcome to the season where it needn´t run quite to the wire if Livrpool do their business tomorrow.

Terrific, marvellous, fantastic are just a few of the words worthy of being used in terms of the great season we have had being able to survive the Premier League. Since changing formation to 4-5-1 we have looked more than capaple of playing in this div. Fantastic achivement for Mick and the lads. They play with their heart outside the shirt, ALL of them. Great survival skills and determination shown by the whole team and furthermore, I agree with Mick’s tactics in the close-out of the season. Ok, now put your hands up whose who want to see the same ponderous stuff we’ve seen with Stoke, Fulham and now Blackburn in the next season. These three teams and probably another 5 are mediocre at best, and all are floundering around the basement of the Premiership. The Premiership this year has been at an all time low – just imagine what we could have achieved with a smart, creative manager.
Sadly, Mick is no great shakes as a tactician evidenced by out-of-position players, persevering with underachievers, way too late substitutions and also his ‘signings’ highlight his inability to recognise and recruit the quality needed to move WW to the next level.
Well done Mick, you got us into the Premiership although surrounded by real dregs, we have survived. You should be proud of your grim determination and uncompromising style – you did your best.
The fact is, MM’s best is not and will not be good enough in the future. He has run his race and now it’s time to hand over the baton to a more contemporary manager who can put Wolves back among the elite – it’s where Wolves rightfully belong.
    Mick here’s some career advice:
    go to a MODERN coaching school;
    improve your communication skills;
    Get an assistant with some tactical nous;
    Join Luton, Barrow or Mansfield.

    Come on Liverpool.

Another very safe performance with a valuable point to show. I counted 7 defenders on the pitch (if you count ward who has played mainly in defence this season) at kick off. All credit to mick and the players for keeping us up but if we dont change the tactics and squad next year we could easily be down in the bottom three. Then draws at home to Stoke and Blackburn would not look so clever.

I read an interesting stat the other day. 80 odd percent of wolves games have the same half time score as full time. To me that says we are hard to break down but struggle to change the course of a game if we go behind.

He is a natural born finisher who like most strikers thrives on goals and this will have done his confidence the world of good. I for one am absolutely DELIGHTED for him and how it’s all come full circle for him.

Now let’s go to Fratton park with a 4-4-2 start with SEB and Doyle up front and see if we can do ourselves justice with it eh?

Kightly can take his time to be 100% fit and ready for next season now. Speaking of next season, I really hope Moxey saying quality over quantity IS the watch word this time. Please don’t get me wrong, I DON’T want to do a Pompey or Hull. I do though want to see us get some players who will improve the squad and not just add to it.
Follow that with a resized (widened) pitch and sparing use of the long throw tactic (Elokobi has put some decent ones in of late).
Finally get Jarvo to carry on where he left off and get one or two QUALITY wingers (NOT Hunt, he had his chance imo) so we can once again be the Wolves all fans love to see. Flying wingers crossing and creating for our strikers. Add to that a QUALITY left back, midfield general and striker and we are looking good imo. Then we need to trim the current squad, I’m not going to name names but hopefully Mick will say thanks but no thanks to the right players and keep the ones we do need.

I realise the word QUALITY usually means a bigger wage but so long as we don’t go paying silly money, I think we could pick up a few players that will get us through the dreaded 2nd season syndrome. Sorry that’s yet to come, my apologies for ruining the mood a little. We’ll put those things on the back burner (for now) and just enjoy the rest of the season. After all, as long suffering Wolves fans we have CERTAINLY earned it!!!

(In the style of the 8 second Microsoft PC adverts)

I am a Wolves fan and I’m proud to be one.

We have ALL rode the rollercoaster that is the Wolves, there have been ups and downs but it’s all over now and we can get out and savour “the buzz”. We kept the faith and we now have our reward for doing so, so ENJOY because I WILL!!
See you next season for the newer ride!!

One more thing…..bring it on Albion, can’t wait for those Black Country Derbies in the PREM!!!!!!!!

    We Are Wolves And Proud.

    Job done!

I’m not a big fan of Mick but credit where credit is due so well done and now we have all of the top west midlands clubs in the Premier League (no offence to Walsall). With that in my mind we could do with winning more derby games next season, Mick has only won two since he’s been here, a league victory over West Brom at Molineux three seasons back and beating Birmingham in the cup last season.

But anyway, I haven’t written much positive things about SEB this season but a super header and his first goal in open play in the top flight, maybe he can do it next season would help if the team could create more in spells where we have good possession, in some games this season we have created chances like 4 or 5 clear cut but over the 90 minutes and not in a 20 or 30 minute spell, or I am just been too picky? Well thankfully our away form has been brilliant like Hull last season and now they are going down after suffering second season syndrome. Reading a few years back, West Brom after the great escape, Ipswich and Bradford years back.

So of course the real trick is coming up.

This season I’ve fount Wolves to be very workmanlike and I have no doubt that next season will be harder for the returning clubs i.e. Newcastle and our neighbours safe bet they are better than Hull and Burnley. Can our away form continue next season? 11 goals at home needs to improve, certainly Doyle is capable of getting 15 goals if he has players around him who take the work load off his hands and give him more chance to get inside the box more often next season.

The midfield needs another creator or will Kightley deliver next season? Should do, he’s got the talent and I expect Jarvis to get better, a more confident Keogh would help the creativity and will Sam Vokes have a place next season? That’s the great thing about the squad, we have young players who I expect to improve, its like Hennsessey, I still think he’ll be a top goal keeper, Foley could be a better defensive holding midfielder or at least give competition for Henry and there’s more to come from Edwards than Guedioura, I don’t think he’s been as good as some fans think, he’s enthusiastic but not much else in my opinion.

Then we come to Mancienne (if we buy him?) and Richard Stearman who the two could well be our first choice central defensive partnership within two or three seasons when they added some physical strength to their bodies and then there’s Christophe Berra who’s surprised me big time this season. So plenty of potential to build upon if we can in the summer. I’ll say four new players of quality if possible, like I would love to see Rodallega at Wolves but at a cost of 10 million in transfer fee and then? 45k week? Then there have been some reports he’s on Arsenal’s radar, if we do sign players on big wages and it goes south then at least we need players who have got resale value. Would signing Robbie Keane on 70k week be wise? It’s a tough balancing act this summer for the three Ms but an interesting summer, Moxey and Morgan have to back up their words this time not just for the fans paying money into the club but for the hope of keeping Doyle long term. A player of his quality knows from experience if the investment isn’t there, then we will most likely go down next season.

Watching the half time celebrations of the team who last won the FA cup made me wander when would the time come again? The most famous amateur footballer in Bill Slater lifting the famous cup, Portsmouth are counting such costs of achieving that success maybe they’ll do it again when skint? So how could we make ourselves a force by spending within our means? Well surely it have to be the academy, if there is any chance of us being up there with the Villa competing for European spots then surely it will only happen if we produce players of the kind of class we need to take us up to that level or it’s going to happen when the stadium has been rebuilt and the club can make more money to be able to afford such expensive and quality players.

Short term, stay up next season would be even greater achievement but safe to say the coming summer is going to be the most important summer transfer window in their history for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Almost forgot, as some have already mentioned.

We also need a new CB, Craddock has been IMMENSE this season but he can’t go on forever and needs some help of the quality variety for next season.

Well done Wolves a great achievement considering the financial restraints imposed by the boardroom. Next season will of course be a lot harder but hopefully we have learnt a lot this season. It took us a long time to get on the pace and the physicality of the premier because it is seriously tough. I think there was a marked improvement when Dave Jones started to play, I know he isn’t the quickest but he has got a brain and his passing was an immediate improvement on what we had produced. But well done to all for pulling it around after a dodgy spell around Christmas. Now I can enjoy another Summer thankyou!

i’m wolves through and through,,but taunting the blackburn fans was not the best of idea’s

if it had turned ugly and fighting broke out it could have ended up with the f.a getting involved and points deducted which we don’t need at this point of the season.5/6 points deducted puts us back in a dog fight or worse

come on lets not spoil all the hard work the lads have done this season by doing something stupid

I agree also with Les (#46). I was thee and could’nt believe seeing parents running onto the pitch with their kids. Not a good example to set. Greta result though. Thought we were poor first half but Mick obviously sorted that at half time because we were a lot sharper. Obviously he could see that the formation was not going to earn us any points, he rightly bought on SEB and go on the offensive. As ever, he made the right decission. Well done Mick!
