Warning by Jones as rivals hit back
Saturday 24th April 2010, 11:14AM BST.
David Jones believes last week’s shock wins for rivals Wigan and Bolton have further sharpened Wolves’ resolve to achieve survival.
Wolves go into today’s clash against Blackburn needing just three points to clinch Premier League safety.
With Mick McCarthy’s side having a six-point gap to the drop zone, and two games left after today’s match, Wolves do not necessarily need to win this afternoon.
And they may not need to at all if Hull continue to falter after failing to take advantage of their game in hand by losing in midweek to Villa.
But after Wigan and Bolton recovered to win after trailing to Arsenal and Stoke respectively, Jones believes Wolves can take nothing for granted.
“You could not have predicted the results of Wigan and Bolton last weekend – as the manager says, there are some crazy results at the moment so we’re not taking anything for granted until it’s mathematically done,” said the midfielder.
“We’ve still got a job to do. We want to get the three points from today to make it mathematically certain that we’re going to be in the Premier League next season.
“Villa’s win at Hull was a good result for us but we’ve still got to get a win and we’re fully focused and 100 per cent concentrated on what we’ve got to do.
“The clubs below us have got to have a very good run-in now to get above us so we’ve put ourselves in a good position.
“We just need to finish it off and get across that line because we all want to be in this league next season.
“We’ve worked very hard to get ourselves in this position so the last thing we want is to drop off in these last three games.
“We’ll just concentrate on our game because the gap could be back to three points after the weekend.
“Hull have a home game as well against Sunderland so they’ve still got a chance which they’ll be looking to take full advantage of.
“But we can’t allow ourselves to falter now – we don’t want to have a bad result now and be waiting another week to seal our Premier League survival.
“We want to get it done and dusted this weekend.”
