Mick McCarthy admits he will have a “glow of satisfaction” if Wolves secure Premier League safety this afternoon.

But he says getting the three points needed against Blackburn Rovers will not be achieved by reminding his players about the mathematics required.

“If we win, I will have reason to have a glow of satisfaction,” said the boss.

As for the players, the Molineux chief will be concentrating on how to get the points rather than how many. “They’re aware of what we need – I don’t need to make them any more aware of it,” he said.

“Should I instead be concentrating on how Blackburn play and how we need to play?

“We don’t just let the players out of a box on a Saturday and tell them that three points keeps us up.

“Saying it is easy, doing it is difficult, especially against Sam’s Blackburn team.

“And the more emphasis you put on saying it will get you safe could actually put more pressure on. Let’s go and play the game.”

McCarthy paid tribute to his players for buying into the 4-5-1 formation that has made Wolves so solid since January.

“I had to change the way we play and it was important I did,” he said.

“It was great that the players bought into it.

“At the end of it players want to win games and want to stay in the league just as much as I do.

“They certainly want it as much as me because it’s the early stage of their careers.

“And so they want to find a way of playing that wins games or doesn’t get beat in games and gets points.

“They were supportive of it and have been from the start.

“We’ve got players who can play in this formation.

“We played good football last season as well but it’s then about having the confidence to try to play it in the Premier League.

“We’ve got better gradually as the weeks have gone by just by playing in it.

“You gain experience on the hoof!”
