Survival incentive enough for Wolves
Saturday 24th April 2010, 11:14AM BST.
Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards insists being one win away from Premier League safety is all the incentive needed to beat Blackburn.
Villa’s 2-0 win at Hull on Wednesday left Mick McCarthy’s side just three points from retaining their Premier League place for next season – barring an 18-goal swing in the Tigers’ favour.
Edwards acknowledges Wolves need no motivation playing in front of their own fans anyway, but knowing they are so close to safety just cranks up the excitement.
“The thought that beating Blackburn means we would be all but guaranteed staying in the Premier League is a great chance for us,” said the midfielder.
“We’ve got three games to do that but hopefully we can do it against Blackburn.
“It’s a tough game but one we feel we can win.
“They’re a good, strong team playing very well at the moment.
“I saw the highlights of the Everton game when they looked good – it’s no disgrace to lose to Everton with the form they’re in at the moment – and Blackburn also held Manchester United as well.”
Blackburn swept Wolves aside 3-1 last September in one of the worst performances of the season for McCarthy’s side.
Only four of the side who started at Ewood are likely to begin the return.
And Edwards is looking to show Rovers the ‘real’ Wolves this time out.
“It would be nice to put in a good performance and show we’re a much better team than we were that day,” he said.
“We want to at least show what we can do after one of our poorer performances there.
“I came on at half-time but we were never really in the game and Stefan Maierhofer’s goal was just a consolation.
“We didn’t play well and didn’t defend well – they were the much better team which was a shame, because at that stage of the season we were hoping to get a result.
“It’s up to us to put that right today.”
Last-gasp wins for Wigan and Bolton over Arsenal and Stoke respectively last weekend have reminded Wolves that results can be unpredictable at this stage of the season.
“There are results you don’t see coming like Wigan beating Arsenal. But it’s about what we do,” said Edwards.
Wolves go into today’s game looking for their first goal in six-and-a-half hours of football having netted just once in eight home games and 12 hours 40 minutes since December.
Edwards stressed points are the priority, however.
“If we’re solid and always in the game those are big plusses in the Premier League,” he said.
“The quality is so good there’s always the possibility of being 3-0 down at half- time and out of the game.
“So the longer we stay in it, the more we know we’ve got a chance to win it.”
