Legend Slater to lift cup again

The FA Cup returns to Molineux tomorrow – giving Wolves’ 1960 winning captain Bill Slater the chance to lift the famous trophy 50 years on.

The Football Association has agreed to a request from Wolves to bring the trophy to a sold-out Molineux for tomorrow’s clash against their Wembley final opponents Blackburn 50 years ago and the silverware will be presented to the players at half time.

Slater, who will be travelling up from his home in London, will be attending the reunion with former team-mates Malcolm Finlayson, George Showell, Gerry Harris, Ron Flowers and Barry Stobart.

Flowers was due to fly back this afternoon from his holiday in Portugal with UK airspace open again after the volcanic ash cloud cleared.
In addition, Blackburn legends Ronnie Clayton and Bryan Douglas will also be re-united with their opponents in the final.

“It’s been a long time since I last held it and it will be nice to see it and touch it again,” said Slater. “I’m sure I can lift it and it will be lovely to get my hands on it again.”

Wolves have also urged fans to stay in their seats so they can see the heroes lift the Cup again. The club have benefitted from its relationship with the FA to bring the Cup back to Wolverhampton.

“Ever since we organised the England Under-21 international here, I’ve had an excellent relationship with the FA,” said Matt Grayson, Wolves’ head of communications and marketing. “And when they heard of the players who had been invited, they were only too pleased to help.”

What an excellent idea, for once something has been done to recognise a Golden Era of not only football but a superb Wolves side.

It was a time of no play acting, strong tackling, talented players playing attacking football, scoring goals and thrilling the crowds that turned up.

Any one who didn’t see Peter Broadbent, Ron Flowers, & Bill Slater play, truly missed what star players were about.

I hope along with all the Fans these players enjoy lifting the famous trophy 50 years on.

Good luck to the current team, manager and fingers crossed for a win and safety tomorrow.
