McCarthy’s vow after safety boost
Thursday 22nd April 2010, 11:59AM BST.
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has vowed to improve the quality of his squad this summer after his side took another step towards safety without kicking a ball.
Villa’s 2-0 win at third bottom Hull last night means McCarthy’s men go into Saturday’s Molineux sell-out against Blackburn knowing victory will keep them in the Premier League barring a mathematical miracle on goal difference.
Should they record a home win, Hull– six points behind them – can only overhaul them by winning all three of their remaining games, as well as overturn a goal difference of 17 in Wolves’ favour.
McCarthy is hopeful his team can secure their place in the Premier League as soon as possible and is already looking ahead.
He said: “We’d have to try to improve on what we’ve got if we stay up. If we don’t then we are just standing still.
“Whatever squad we’ve got or retain, then if we stay in the Premier League – and it’s all ‘ifs’ – then we’ll have to try to improve it again.
“If we stay up, players might have a bit more faith in all of us that we can do it again although then there’s second season syndrome. And if we stay up there’s maybe the chance of spending more money and bringing better players in.
“It’s all about improving the squad, but the players that are in are doing great at the minute.
“Even those players will want to see improvements, I know I did as a player. I didn’t want them to improve my position, I didn’t think they could!
“But if they did then whoever came in was going to have to fight for his slot, and that’s how everybody should feel.”

With Hull losing to Villa in such an abject display, we are safe and sound. Please, please, please can we have an attacking team on Saturday. Go against the grain, Mick, I know statistically we could get caught, but what the hell, treat the crowd to some ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’. Otherwise I’ll just sit there being bored stupid again. Please go for the win.

Nice one, Villa. Mick’s right, of course! Newcastle and the Albion are likely to be fairly robust competitors next season, adding depth to the Premiership. UTW!

Quality and not quantity is what is needed and then we can challenge for a champions league place next season!
This article is only a variation on the same theme that has appeared on this website over the last week or so.
McCarthy will have to decide what system Wolves will deploy next season before choosing which players he would like to sign.
Fans writing previously on this site seem to have automatically assumed that the team will play as 4-4-2. If Kightly is going to be fully fit, it may well be that the current 4-5-1 will be used again next season, which in my opinion would be more successful.
The obvious positons to improve quality would be at left back, a creative midfield player, and an additional striker.
At last talking sense about signongs. QUALITY NOT QUANTITY is the watch word if we survive.
Another quality striker (Keano) a quality midfielder and a left back and central defender.
Everybody get behind the team on Sayurday and then we can enjoy the final two games of the season!!!
Jody for player of the year, although I expect the mass vote to go to Doyler!
Surely this is what every Wolves fan knows…
This summer could well be the make or break of us as a Premier League side…
We will see what Moxey and Morgan really think about the club, and where they see us being in a few years… I know they will put the running of the club first, but surely WHEN we stay up is the time to put a few Markers out to say that we are here to STAY…
The 4-5 players I think we need are going to be the most important signings… If we take a view of the signing of Doyle… We spent money, and got what we paid for… Granted he has not scored the goals we would have liked him to score (and i’m sure he would have liked to score) but he is a typical WOLVES player… Never gives up, and plays for the team… Exactly what every fan would do if they have the skill to do so…
I honestly think the side needs to be strengthened straight down the middle… Do this and we’ll be ok…
Up the Wolves!
Reckon we need at least 4-5 players. Cannot see the quality plea lasting. Will we have any takers for half a dozen players that just have not been able to go up a level. Interesting to see if there are any takers for SEB
Report abuse
Almost there. It will be a tremendous achievement. One more shove. The first time we will have survived a season in top flight football since 1981.

Well done Mick and the team, keeping us in the premier. This is where the Wolves belong. Looking forward to next season, get a few quality players in and l think midtable is possible. Well done Mick UTW.

i hope we get a win against blackburn but its going to be a tuff game i wouldnt mind a draw against blackburn though then try and get a win away at portsmouth looking good lads not there yet though
as for the summer we need to bring a few quality players in cause the squad has done fantastic this year but we will go down next year if we dont get no proven quality in
people i would buy/loan
1.andrew johnson
2.jamie o hara
3.stephen hunt
4.jimmy bullard
5.emile heskey (worth a gamble)
6.nicky shorey
7.chris eagles
8.steven fletcher

Come on the Villa!! 3 Points on sat to make it 100% certain! Players I’d love to see next season:
Robbie Keane (of course)
Jamie O’hara
Jimmy Bullard
Luke Young
Emile Heskey
Scott Parker
David Dunn
Mikel Silvestre
Splash the cash Morgan!

Mick as done a great job it may not of been good football but thats not what he was asked to do. he was asked to stay up and by george he has done it near enough. I would like to see us go for likes of carlton cole, jimmy bullard players of quality desire and can attack as well as defend.

Wise wolf, after your last post I may call you Not so Wise Wolf.
You state “I know statistically we could get caught, but what the hell, treat the crowd to some ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs” Dont be a silly person now!!!
I hope that even if I have sat through a boring 1-0 win, with a deflected own goal off David Dunn, and Hull have lost. That would be A LOT MORE satisfying than us playing 4-4-2 and losing 3-2 4-3 or whatever and givng Hull or WHU the chance to overhaul us, JUST FOR THE SAKE OF SOME OOHS AND AHS!!
GET REAL!
Heres to a solid 1-0 win with a 4-5-1 formation, and then you can have all the Ooohs and Ahs you want when we go to Pompey, with 5 up front.(Possibly I would then trust Milijas to play!!!)
UP THE WOLVES!!

Let’s hope there’s no pitch invasion or open top bus parade on Saturday, because we don’t really deserve or need one.
next season is the test. better teams coming up.

Most team in the premier deploy a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 formation. Its alot more flexible. It be great to see Kites, Jarvis and Doyle through the middle with that formation.
However we need a squad of quality and we have the basis of one, we just need some key additions.
Goalie dept, No point touching it.
Defenders, A left back, Nicky Shorey would be great to nab from villa as he is on loan to fulham I beleive. Ex-Reading so the connection with USA & Doyle could influence him. Dont get me wrong Big George could be one for future but he needs to be understoody.
Another centre half. Craddock cant last for ever so I reckon MM will be looking for a commanding experience centre half. Who?? Any suggestions.
Midfield the bone of contention. I am expecting that Belgian bloke to be signed up, as he does look quality, but we need another 1 in centre of midfielder who can break up play and be creative. Assuming Hull are dowm would Bullard come to us although I can see him going to Newcastle. But we need another midfielder and another wide man. Eagles perhaps, forget S.Hunt he is a mercanary who didnt want to come in Jan!
Strikers, well we need to firstly ship out Big Chris, S.Ward “I still class him as a forward never a left back!” try to get some moneyu back off The Hoff who has been a disaster. Send Vokes & Andy K on loan and I aint sure with Bia. We need to stick with SEB, as I think SEB knows what the premiership is all about which is finishing off chances, and he needs to get himself sharp & fit. It be nice if Robbie Keane came back and I think Wolves would make an offer for his services.
There you go Moxey, make it happen.

Time for Jez to earn his pay check!
Let’s not buy anyone based on a video!
Every World Cup someone has a couple of good games and they go from being a 2 mil player to a 8 mil player with extortionate wage demands; let’s not get caught up in world cup inflation!
5 quality players are better than 10 squad players.
1 Left back
1 Central defender (cover for Jody/Berra)
2 midfielders
1 Proven goal scorer
And trim the dead wood. UTW

Heard it all before…this time we NEED to get in TRIED and TESTED QUALITY – NOT CHAMPIONSHIP – players!! Too many of our players are not good enough at this level, some should be sold and others, like SEB, loaned out. Keep Mancienne!!
It is not the formation that stops us scoring. It is the quality of players. Barcelona play 451 and they score hatfulls.
451 all the way next season. And lets hope we bringsome quality players to improve the scoring record.
MM is only saying what most people on here have been saying for weeks now, that ‘IF’ we stay up we need to ‘improve the quality’ of the type’s of players we look at and try and bring into the club. Although whenever i put a list up ‘Jake’ seems to rubbish it saying those types of players wont come to us or they can earn money where they play or go elsewhere. But we MUST try and buy 4/5 ‘Top Class’ players otherwise we will never move upwards/forwards. Yes we are NOT the biggest/best club in the PL, but we are also NOT the worst, thats were our ‘Management’ come into it, surely its their job to ‘SELL’ this club to top footballers/agents, make them promises that we are a club with ambitions, who want to move ‘forwards and upwards’. Show them by the type of players we are looking at and talking too, convince them playing for us would further their careers, give them more of a regular game here, rather than warming the bench at ‘Top 4-6 Teams’. Go for players with 3-5yrs experience in the PL, aged about 24-28yrs old, plus the odd 30+yrd old, another leader on the pitch who’s seen it done it,n got the t-shirt, like when we bought Emlyn Hughes,Paul Ince,Dennis Irwin in, one or two of them type’s would be ideal for 1/2 seasons to help and develop our ‘young and hungry’ players. I think we need xtra cover at LB.CH.CM.RW.or LW.STRIKER. UTW. Also a ‘Big Thankyou to Villa’. UTW FOREVER.

Totally agree with #4. 4-5-1 could work wonders next season if we get kighty can finally go the whole season without hurtin himself again. But sayin that, if we do buy another striker i would prefer 4-4-2. I’ll leave it to the professionals me thinks and I’ll just have a go on Fifa. BTW I’ve won the champions league last night. Roman Pavlychenko scored my winning goal, beating Real Madrid 3-2. Your move Mick…
Report abuse
I’m with you 4. 4-5-1 obviously suits us, but we need more of an attacking threat from midfield, Kightly if he stays fit will hopefully provide that, but its a big if, as due to his injuries we don’t know if he can make the step up yet. So we definitely need 1/2 midfielders, left back and a proven striker or 2 is a must because wot if Doyle gets injured. Saying that I still think SEB will come good, I think the bloke has had his confidence totally and utterly shattered at the mo. But lets be honest fellow fans we should all be pleased with this season as it’s almost mission accomplished and for that I for one am very grateful. UTW

Does any1 actually think that kites can handle it in the prem? I really think we have had the 25k’s worth out of him, the only couple of times he has played this season he really did look out of place.. I know jarvo did at the beginning but i think jarvis is a much better winger than kites and has adapted very well
we really need a good right winger next season aswell at left back, centre half for cover, center mid and striker..
Looking forward to sat hopefully better than fulham even though i fort we played well as we only went there for a point.. nice ground to be honest :-)

SUPERSTARDJWOLVES- agree about kites jarvis and doyle. Calling Hunt a mercanary is a bit off the mark though. He wanted to stay at the club he was contracted to rather than leave, thats the opposite of a mercanary. If the shoe was on the other foot, and hunt was at wolves and he left for another club in january, we would be slating him.
Saying that though, he isnt worth 5 million, and i think we could get him for a real bargain if hull go down, providing few other clubs come in for him and start a bidding war. Hulls financial situation will leave them ripe for the picking if they go down, and we should look at taking advantage of that.

11) Go and watch the Tesco’s if you are not happy. When we stay up one of the main reasons will be that we have the meanest defence in the bottom half of the table.
We have not scored enough for two main reasons – SEB had no pre-season and lacked confidence and Kites has been out. Birmingham and Stoke have not scored loads of goals and you won’t see their fans moaning. Put up or shut up!
A pitch invasion and it will be deserved. MM has kept us up with a minimal spend.

If the rumour is correct then we could also need a new goalkeeper!
Liverpool has been scouting Wayne Hennessey and are expected to make a bid come the end of the season of £2.5M.
Whether Hennessey could be sold or even want to leave is unknown PLUS if he did leave, would £2.5M be the right figure?
Difficult decision if the rumour is right. Should we sell him or keep him?
2.5 for Henners??? And the rest a keeper of his quality and considering he has another 15 years ahead of him it wouldn’t even make financial sense to sell him for anything less than £5 mil cos we certainly couldn’t get anyone in of quality and who would be in the side for 3,4 or 5 years for less than that.

Pezwolves – i personally think he would do a good job for us. From what we saw of him early in the season he struggled, but then again, he was coming back from injury so he had an excuse. Even in the Man utd game in the cup, he showed some of his pace and intelligence. I think he will come good.

How many Teams in the Prem play with 2 up front week in, week out? Man U? Arsenal? Chelsea perhaps? NO! They all play a variation of the 4-5-1 formation. They know it offers flexibilty both defending & going forward. What you do need, though, is a goal scoring centre forward (a la Rooney/Drogba/Van Persie) and goals from your midfield. Money does not buy quality, just ask Man-ure fans about Berbatov!!!
We cannot compete with the top half of the Prem for players or wages, but we can with the West Ham’s, the Blackburns, the West Bromwich Albions!!!

I doubt very much Wayne will be leaving wolves. He is young got loads to learn and like Ben Foster he will have a long future at their respected clubs. Besides if he went and USA got injured who would step in. Ikeme hasnt done that well on loan and we know about Murray. Incidentally £2.5M for a young goalie is a joke. I suggest you buy a different paper!
Wayne will be a better goalie after all his experiences this season. Liverpool are better off going for Joe Hart!

Rest assured once our prem status has been confirmed then MM & Moxey will start planning for next season, I think we will spend 20-25 millon on 4 quality players as well as signing the belgian bloke, that money will be offset slightly by the clearout we need to have, Iwellumo, Hoff, bia, Halford, ward, shackell, Ikeme, Elokobi, keogh, friend and i’d send vokes on a season long loan to a championship club. The aim next season has got to be to finish about 10th, that would be a fantastic season for us and theres no reason why we can’t, 6 points from the steptoes and blouses is a must for me too.

No 32.Brummierobwolves, How many times have you and i said about SEB not having a pre-season training under his belt, and the importance of it. If footballers dont get that 4-6 weeks under the belt, they find it very hard to reach the level of fitness to get them thro the season, even tho they train daily with the squad. It really is that important. Re-Systems i dont think 4.5.1 is negative its how you play it and what players you play, we are keeping clean sheets as we’ve played a RB at RW, plus deploying Mancienne as an holding midfielder, already havin Karl Henry playing deep/square, but if you play it we say Kites at RW and leave Mancienne out and play Iwelumo as a target man leaving Doyle to play in and around him feeding of his flick-on’s with Jarvis and Kigthly either side of them two, which makes it more attacking like AV do with Carew,Agbonalor, and Young/Downing exactly the same?. But it ‘DEPENDS’on what opposition your playing against Man U,Chelsea,Arsenal etc yes play a more defensive team Home & Away, but teams like Blackburn,Bolton,Wigan,Sunderland etc play a more Attacking team like the players named above. At Home and at times Away too.UTW

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t a draw with Blackburn mean we’d be just as safe as we would with a win against Blackburn?
Anyway, we could lose everygame 4-0 and still be safe cause there’s no way Hull will get two wins and a draw from Sunderland(H) Wigan(A) and Liverpool(H).
Burnley would also have to win all three against Liverpool(H) Blues(A), Spurs(H) to go above the points we already have. Also…not going to happen.

Why the same old predictable names???
Heskey?!…God No!!!
Hunt & Bullard???!!!… Massive wages & they haven’t done a great deal for Hull have they?
Silvestre??!!…isn’t he 97 years old?
Look at what has happened at Portsmouth. For God’s sake, don’t mortgage the future of our club by signing average players on huge salaries.
Keep the faith with our recent successful formula of “young and hungry”.
By all means look for quality and be prepared to pay a little more where it can be justified and where there would be the realistic possibility of recouping the money or selling on at a profit if necessary.
Mick’s done a fantastic job if he keeps us up. But let’s not be fooled… we need to improve. We need to score more goals and win more matches. We need to play a tight and stifling 4-5-1 where necessary, but we need to have the players, the skills and the mindset to play more expansively and creatively at other times.
If Sylvan can’t make the adjustment (and I haven’t ruled him out yet) then we need at least one more forward, but we need creativity in midfield and wide. A fully fit Kites delivering on his full potential will be like a new signing and I hope Milijas will still be here next season, but we need to be able to put teams under pressure particularly at home.
Let’s trust the scouts to find some more excellent players whose names we fans might not know at the moment. Let’s not start on the slippery slope down to financial ruin like many of the teams around us. I’m old enough to remember just how close we came to disaster in the past.
Don’t play “Fantasy Football” by signing the same old names on silly salaries. Keep the faith with the policy that has got us this far.

Mick-Mac should stay with his defensive 4-5-1 formation (known as park the BUS) next season, because he has had great success with it.
obviously it suits the club and the fans think it’s a fantastic style. with Newcastle and ALBION

as both those clubs have teriffic goal scores.
Wolves should keep with the tried and tested format. No need to spend any money as the players

MM could do no worse than look at importing a few players from the Bundesliga, according to reports here, Ozil and Boateng look set to move to M City in the summer, but there are others with lots of quality to consider who’ve not had the best of club seasons, last years UEFA cup team qualifiers Hertha Berlin will be relegated barring a miracle this weekend, and TSG Hoffenheim the minnows have quality too at affordable prices. Sejad Salihovic wld be a snip. quality midfield, tough tackler creative.
Josip Simunic, would be another, defensive utility player. Cacau, has also decided not to renew his contract at VFB Stuttgart, he’d be available for nothing. quality attacking midfielder. Start shopping MM, 20 million we need in the war chest.

We can’t rely on 451 forever. What if Doyle gets injured. We will then be screwed. Remember us doing the same in the Robbie Keane era. He then went off to Ireland and we nearly got relegated.
Keep at it for the rest of this season but we will need to invest in a few better defenders and mid-fielders to not have to rely on such a defensive formation.

JtH you really are a first class muppet mate you regularly post drivel on both pages, we were scoring for fun in the CCC in fact more so than your lot and it is no marker for scoring goals in the Prem, we will eclipse this season any season you have had in the Prem and you coming up is at least 4 but probably 6 points towards our quest in establishing ourselves. Quote me on that next season PLEASE! You are a Clown along with Sir Terry, wolves(baggie)mod, Bob(baggie)wolf and all the other jealous desperate Tescos who post on here pretending to be Wolves fans.

Let me remind you Jack the Yoyo, Newcastle went down with a stronger team than has stormed the Championship…and you were way behind ! It”s been a weak Championship this season, even Cardiff have managed the play offs.
Newcastle have been given a £15 million transfer kitty. Wow….That’ll make a big impact….. and no doubt Jeremy Peace will be throwing his cash about. If they make it, Forest will be the danger team next season from the newcomers. Well run, good manager, cash in hand.
Difficulty the Tescos have is trying to attract players to a yoyo club.
More established clubs like Wolves have moved up a level and the highly successful 4-5-1 will be saved only for the top sides.
One final question. Could you pick out Da Silva in an identity parade?
Yaaaaaaaaa !

no61 Simon, If we draw with Blackburn we will have 35 points,Hull can still get 37 points. And Burnley could still get 36 points. So with our better goal difference we need 3 points to make sure.By the way what our you doing in Oklahoma, hopefully not singing You’ll Never Walk Alone every night?.
