Quality over quantity for Wolves

Quality over quantity for Wolves

Wolves have vowed to put quality over quantity regarding new signings this summer if they remain in the Premier League this season.

In a bold message to supporters, chief executive Jez Moxey has outlined plans to invest in fewer but better players this summer providing, as expected, the club wins its survival battle.

Manager Mick McCarthy has spent around £18million on 11 players since promotion, including four loans.

But only three permanent signings – £6.5million club-record capture Kevin Doyle, free transfer goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann and belatedly £2million Ronald Zubar – could be noted to have made a really significant contribution.

Nenad Milijas at £2.6million has sparkled in fits and bursts, while on-loan pair Michael Mancienne and Adlene Guedioura have become regulars.

But £2million Greg Halford, £1.8million Stefan Maierhofer, £1.2million Andrew Surman along with other temporary captures such as Geoffrey Mujangi Bia and Segundo Castillo have had little chance to impress.

Moxey was expected to have delayed such an announcement until the end of the season but, with a clear strategy in place on where the club is heading, is happy to reveal the slight shift in policy.

He said: “If, and it’s still a big ‘if’ we’re fortunate enough to stay in the Premier League this time around, I don’t think we’ll be looking to bring in so many players, but we’ll try to raise the quality and bring in a lesser number.

“That would be the plan if we’re able to stay in the Premier League.”

Moxey now admits some signings have not worked out.

He said: “While you have to invest in your team – and we did – we knew some players we bought may not work, and we knew some would. Some have and some haven’t.

“We knew some existing players would really step up, some haven’t been able to do it as well as we would have liked.

“It’s disappointing Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has only scored one goal, we were expecting perhaps double figures or close with eight or nine goals.

“That hasn’t happened and unfortunately he got an injury very early on in the season.”

whilst plaudits must go to Mick for achieiving so much with so little as well as just about every single one of the current starting for playing out of their skins… but you sir have been an anchor. and not the good kind.

Sounds to me like a big clear out. I have to say that is what is needed, and agree quality over quantity, always keeping in mind all positions need to be covered in case of injury.

The challenge is getting the right people to agree to move to the club and hopefully that will be a little easier this time around as I am pretty sure we will make the stay!

Strikers, wings and another quality player in midfield.. Happy hunting!!

I heard Jez saying that last night on WM, funny tho i also heard him saying exactly the same thing when sitting in the Wolves ground ,when we were still in the Championship?, that transfer-fees and wages would be paid for the ‘Right Players’ and that we wouldn’t have a ‘wage cap’, so excuse me if i take it with a ‘pinch of salt’. I really hope that SM/JM do mean it this time ‘IF’ we do stay up, hopefully playing aswell as we are and we keep getting our share of luck, we will be playing PL football again next season. This season has been all about settling in and establishing ourselves, next season however is all about making that next leap. And to do that we need Quality players , not your £1M Halford types, we need as No 4 says Parker,Nolan,Keane,Carragher,Bentley, players of that class another top LB too. UTW

Can anybody tell me what has gone wrong with Milijas? he looked the business early on in the season and I thought he would turn out to be a quality aquisition.Guedioura again started well when given his chance, but looked completely exhausted at the Villa. Are our players simply being judged by how much ground they cover during a game and not by their footballing skills?

So this is an implicit concession that wages will be paid for quality, unlike 2003/04, unlike last summer and the January transfer window.
Idle comments like this are more welcome in the political arena as we all suffer a month of election campaigning.
Can he justify this? Nope. Has he come out with false promises in the past? You bet.
I’ll believe it when I see it Jez, just like that proven Premiership quality that you guaranteed we’d get, not to mention your best ever: “If you draw up a table of the average over three years of where teams finish and then correlate that to their wage bill, they’re going to be very well aligned.”

I think people should read a fuller chunk of this interview on the Wolves site.

We all know we need more quality, I think its the one thing that Happy Clappers and Doom and Gloomers are actually in complete agreement about – they just disagree about the reasons fo why it hasn’t come in yet.

I have not heard this interview in full, but I must say that Im frankly shocked at the open criticism of SEB. He’s obviously low on confidence, has had a ‘broken’ season in terms of fitness and appearances, so unless the actual comments Jez made were indeed fuller and more balanced than the above extract, I think this is harsh on the lad at a time when he probably needs an arm around the shoulder.

I’d be happy with £20M being spent on just 4-5 players. The players they replace can drop to the bench and I think with quality additions we don’t need a bigger squad.

A few players need to go though. Maierhofer and Halford to be sold. Surman out on loan. I hope we keep Milijas.

    Priority for me are:

Left back – Shorey, Traore, Belhadj
Centre back – Unless Zubar plays there with Foley at right back
    Winger/Midfielder (to cover Kits/Jarvis) – O’Hara, Bentley, Eagles, Hunt
Striker – Anyone who can score 15 goals. Ideally Keane. Gotta spend big – £10-12M.

If we do go for quality over quantity and sign players of the quality of Doyle, we’ll do ok again. If Kites can get back fit as well it’ll be like a new signing.

I do not buy all this the Prem next year will be better, Newcastle may or may not spend and yes you would probably look at them as club and think they can achieve safety and more, but, are they stronger than when they went down? No, will they be paying the wages again? No. The Baggies? I’m sorry they are a decent footballing side no question but again I would say they are weaker than last time around and haven’t set the CCC alight, and they will probably lose at least Dorrans. As for they play offs no team in and around there are near equipped for the Prem, and all teams coming up will have problems signing the required quality. SHOULD we stay up I beleive we will be well placed to compete with teams near the top end of the bottom half for players and should be looking to surpass the likes of Wigan, Bolton and dare I say one time Prem champs Blackburn. We don’t have to worry about other teams we have to worry about ourselves survival is in our hands as is establishing ourselves in the Prem.

Next season will be tougher, I agree with all those who say the same and we need to get things right in time for pre season.

Nearly home and dry,a win on Sunday could be enough but we must keep going to the finish.

If Halford is going as people believe, then could we revert to a wider pitch. Obviously a narrower pitch was part of our survival strategy, but if we are bringing in quality then quality players can do the business on a broader canvas, and who knows we might get some quality play/entertainment along the way. Survival was this season’s priority, let’s hope next season bring out the oohs and ahs.

The lad we’ve been linked with, Lallana, has a’lot of skill and pace. Coming from the lower leagues is a big step up but you can get some bargains. How much did we pay Gillingham for Jarvis? Some players for next season:-

    Wilfred Bouma (Experienced left back)
Curtis Davis (fully fit great defender)
    Gary O’Neil

    Seeing is believing!

‘Quality over quantity’, those are good words Jez but as many have said already, seeing is believing!
To obtain quality, you must lay out serious money and that ponders this big question – do Wolves have serious money?
Furthermore, even if Wolves do, is the club considering loosening the purse strings to pay serious money to those players, that is if they can be convinced to come to Molineux in the first place?
Big (football) ideas have to be supported by big money and although Steve Morgan is a millionaire and was prepared to buy into Liverpool with a considerably bigger investment than he has so far put into Wolves, how deep will his pockets be to pay for this quality?
Jez Moxey, do not think that giving out soundbites will appease Wolves supporters, it will not!
Such comments have been put forward time and time again over the years and the only time any idea actually reached fruition was when Sir Jack redeveloped the stadium but it was some years ago now and the stadium needs a complete facelift asap!
So when Wolves’ league position is determined, it will be of great interest to see if these ideas actually come about or they are just ‘pie in the sky’ – which is what we have been fed many times before!

31 – the difference between this year and last year is, if we stay up, we will be a more enticing prospect than some other premier league clubs. Even this year we will still probably struggle to bring in some of the players that we all would love to see, as we are still going to be in and around the favorites to be relegated.

£20 – £30 million on 3 or 4 quality players and a couple of quality loan signigns would be fantastic.

£11m on Keane or even better to get him on a years loan.
£3m on Belhadj, even though portsmouth spent 4.5m, i feel we could get him on the cheap because of their finances. Hes worth over 5m though.
£5-10m to bring in a quality winger to cover jarvis and Kites. (if we did go in for Hunt if hull went down, i wouldnt go any higher than 2-3m for him)
£6m to bring in a quality player from abroad that may set the league alight. (I can dream)

Love him or loathe him Jez Moxey has kept the club relevantly solvent by not buying over the odds for players. The alternative is to go for broke and do a Portsmouth.

There is a further consequence of bringing in a player who the club agree to pay higher wages than the existing players. The existing players will also want their contracts re-negotiated, which can lead to disagreements in the dressing room and affect moral.

I beleive one of the main elements of success this season is the apparant unison within the club. That applies to all players whether they in the team or not. That should not be underestimated.

We may not be safe, but we’ve battled and scrapped harder than they ever have to stay in the Premiership, and they’ve had two more seasons than us in it.

21 – N1 Wolf: completely agree. Newcastle haven’t got the money anymore, as Ashley lost half his fortune when the banks almost went belly up, and has already has a load of players on huge wages. Will he afford to sign more? I think they’ll be the Sheff Wed of the Prem. West Brom won’t spend – they never do, and if they do, who’d sign for them? Forest have money but no-one will go there. West Ham are £100m in debt and will have to sell before they can buy, so is it really going to be any better at the bottom next season?
If we stay up, survival next season is even more crucial than this season because then we’ll have laid a foundation from which we can truly kick on.

Such is the size of the job to gain admission to; stay in; and progress upwards in the Premier League that practically every comment has some validity. My view is that we need to identify the best ‘system’ to give us the best possible outcome across a full season of games (I am increasingly convinced that 4-5-1 offers us that outcome – reading some of the various ‘technical’ websites on the systems helps in understanding what MM’s intentions are). If that is the intention for next season and if we do indeed stay up, then, for me, the next step is to improve the quality of the squad. That may well be done by bringing in new players, but can also be done by improved coaching, fitness and strength and many other aspects for the current squad. There is a case for purchase of specialist players – Doyle could be seen as one of these . . . just the sort of player to lead a line of one – if those players become available and will come to us on terms that fit the philosophy and intentions of the club. There is also value in looking ahead 3 or 4 years and buying players now so as to instill in them what the club wants – some will prove to be not suitable but, if we do the job right, will leave as much better players than when they came. But the main priority must be pragmatic. We need, at least, a squad capable playing at Premier League pace for 95 minutes a game over a season of games, focussing on keeping goals against at a minimum, scoring goals but not at the expense of conceeding them, and with a minimum objective of averaging one point a game. To do that easily may well take us another 4 years. To promote that on the field the full squad need to be together, with those not playing Saturday ready to support those that are, and those that are playing to encourage those that aren’t. The management team need to be constant in their approach to that squad. And the fans need to up their understanding of the Premier League and just how bloody difficult it is to compete, survive and prosper in the shark infested waters that it has become. Get rid of the shopping lists – they begin to look like little kids Xmas list drawn up for Santa – nice to dream up and scribble but Xmas morning’s a different matter. Constancy of purpose should be our moto.

Secondly, ALL the talk of players that wont come to us etc – Unless the player fancies regular european football and Wolves are not prepared to pay their wage demands we stand EVERY chance of signing any player!

Thirdly, The ‘other’ factor is how well Moxey and MM are capable of ‘competing’ against similar clubs in the Prem (management teams)

Finally, whether we like it or not – we are in the same boat as other teams – ala Stoke West Ham Bolton etc and can and will be considered as possible ‘relegation’ candidates each season until we produce regularly the squad and type of football that breeds confidence in players and fans alike
4-5-1 appears to be the formula for survival But how long are we going to rely on the same tactics and the few players we now have to produce the goods each season???

Taking off the Gold N Black tinted specs – Is MM and Co good enough tactically in the Prem for the club to be comfortable next season or will we be found wanting next time out as other teams will catch on quick to how we always play (one trick pony)???
Is Jez Moxey capable of attracting the better than average Prem Proven Players for next season??? Or are we going to be subjected to as much hype and spin as we heard last time about the ‘Job Done’ announcement???

Can we rely on this next season???

    I hope so……….. fingers crossed………

    Up the Wolves!!!

As regards the “job done” statement, I think the job is done. It looks like we will survive this season and think it is right that we are now looking to next season. Let’s try and get in for some players before the world cup starts and prices become inflated for the Ivory Coast left back which is what normally happens.

Let’s not forget that the Premiership is a learning curve for everybody, players, manager and supporters. I know McCarthy has been there before but I don’t think Fergie could have kept Sunderland up at that time. McCarthy must know he made mistakes with some players but let’s see what he brings in for next season. Hopefully some real quality which we do need as we have to start scorig more goals.

If I was Mick though the first thing I would be thinking about would be getting to 40 points next season and then go from there.

Wolves must start paying big money for players who will walk straight into the side. Its quite clear where we need the most strengthing – LB, CB, RW/LW and CF. Here’s a few targets I would hope we’re looking at:

LB- Traore (loan), Andrew Taylor (Boro/former Eng U21)

    CB- David Wheater, Curtis Davies

    RW/LW- Chris Eagles, Stephen Hunt

CF- Robbie Keane, Aruna Dindane, Daniel Sturridge

All the above would add quality. I like the sound of Steve Sidwell as a target, but do we need another centre mid if we manage to keep Guedioura and Mancienne for another year?

Another thing is… we need to widen the pitch again. I have no doubt the reason we have scored so few at home is because there’s not enough width for our players to create chances. We’ve looked far more threatening away from home on big pitches. If we sign some quality wingers/strikers, we definately need to widen the pitch.

Why’s Moxey making a statement like this before we’ve secured our status? I’m sure particular individuals are realistic enough to know that their futures probably lie elsewhere should we stay up, but this sort of thing could also act as a demotivating force, as it used to when we had too much deadwood destabilising the squad in the Championship in years past; players who were content to drift along on good contracts with minimum effort. If we go down, they’re exactly the kind of players we’d find difficult to shift on.
As for the comments regarding SEB, they may be honest and, let’s face it, accurate- but what must the kid be thinking now? And what happens if we do go down; how would he feel about staying at a club who seem to have such a low appreciation of his past services??
Too many chickens being counted for my liking; let’s concentrate on the task in hand- this is a big weekend for us, with Hull and WHU having winnable-looking Home games, whilst we face a Club we haven’t beaten in yonks. Could be big pressure on going into next weekend vs Fulham…

Alex, Sturridge isnt going to leave Chelsea for Wolves. Keane is washed up. Dindane isnt the best option from Pompey, Piquienne is. Whats the obsession on here with Eagles? He cant get into the worst team in the Premiership!!! Curtis Davies? Has anyone seen him play recently? No, because ONeills given up on him! We can do a lot better than that lot Alex.

another in the long list of moxleys cheap sound bites. like buying “experienced players” pre season and that didnt happen, nothing happened in January only talk of bids for keane, adam johnson, and you wont suprised to hear me say nothing will happen much differently if we stay up.The mentality of the management of wolves and that includes moxley and MM is championship.
They dont want to use the money available and make bold signings which could really improve the squad and maintain our prem status, and I’m not sure they could handle a big name signing. Its easy to sign little or unrated players that nobody wants like halford,bia,castillo.etc. It doesnt have to cost a lot- look at Zenden who signed on a free to sunderland, or Delgardo for blackburn.

Re: Robbie Keane & why we shouldn’t bother with him this summer (provided we can continue in the promised land)….

    1) if he didn’t want to join us in January, why should we want a player who is obviously just in it for the wage packet, not the chance to come back to wolves because he wants to!

&2) he has already played for us, & I’m sure there maybe one or two more clubs that he always dreamed of playing for when he was a kid, that he hasn’t actually got round to playing for!! ;o)

wolfhedd – yeah they can draw up their lists but this kind of talk is pointless in the press as we dont know what league we will be in yet. A do it quietly approach would be best for all concerned at this point.

Yes Jez, another nice bunch of words. Like last season, like the January transfer window, everything you said then turned out to be rather inaccurate.

We spent less than Albion and the ‘wages paid to finishing league position’ equation would have us finishing 19th so forgive me for not believeing that you are now willing to spend the necessary for us to realistically compete and back up what you say.

We shall see but I am of the opinion that we’ll all be feeling somewhat let down again come September by the difference in transfer policy expextations.

lets put words into action then jez!!!!

for me robbie keane as expensive as he will be must be bought just to partner doyle what better than to have irelands front 2 playin in gold n black!

plus we need a quality winger yes jarvis has been outstanding this season, and foley has done a deasent job while kites has been out but can kites cut it in the prem!!!

SEB needs 2 go out on loan gain some confidence.

L/B ?…….C/B wheater proven quality in the prem
AMF……o’hara even if only on loan, parker if west ham go down!
