Wolves will not appeal Henry red

Wolves are not going to appeal captain Karl Henry’s red card against Arsenal because of their fear his ban could have been increased.

The club firmly believe the decision was wrong, but at the heart of their reasoning not to appeal is having to prove referee Andrew Marriner made a “serious and obvious” error, which could put their word against the official, therefore risking further punishment.

The grim news means the captain will be suspended for the next three games. Henry misses the chance to make his 150th League appearance for Wolves against his former club Stoke on Sunday, plus the matches against Fulham and Blackburn.

Boss Mick McCarthy said: “Having spoken to a lot of different people over the weekend, including a number of former referees, I haven’t found anyone yet who thinks that Karl should have been sent off.

“That seems to be a view shared by those who have seen the incident on television as well. But having also sought advice in terms of the appeal process, we have decided to accept the punishment as it stands.

“The FA’s Regulatory Commission will only uphold a claim for wrongful dismissal if they judge that the referee has committed a “serious and obvious error.” Under that wording, I have been advised that any appeal would be very unlikely to succeed.

“If the Commission also have the right to lengthen any suspension to twice the initial ruling if they believe an appeal was made which didn’t have any chance of success.

“Despite our frustration and disappointment at losing Karl for three games, we can’t run the risk of that ban being extended and so unfortunately we have to take our medicine.”

Privately, club officials are disappointed at the way Marriner appeared to be duped by the hysterical reaction of Arsenal’s players amid a perception that has emerged under manager Arsene Wenger that the Gunners are hard done by.

A frustrated Henry has now bore the brunt of that, as the captain faces up to a spell on the sidelines.

He said: “I can understand the decision not to appeal because we don’t want to risk having the ban extended. I feel really harshly done by and am just so disappointed.

“It’s my first sending off in over 300 games. I’ve always liked to tackle and but I’ve never been malicious – I’m not one to try to ‘do’ players or go in off the ball.

“It’s the sort of challenge I’ve made a lot this season and I’ve seen tackles over the weekend that were worse than mine but didn’t even get a yellow card.”

    Sorry mate, you’re dead wrong.
Tackling from behind with 100 mph is a red card even if he takes the ball cleanly. You have to eliminate these tackles that players cannot defend themselves against.

Its a joke that you can’t easily appeal for mistakes by the referees and for the fact you can be punished further if you do.

The decisions they make can cost clubs millions of pounds if it means a team is relegated. This can then put a number of jobs at the clubs or surroundings areas at risk when these teams eventually go into administration.

Imagine if your wrongly arrested for something but you are already guilty for it unless you appeal. Then if you do your sentence is doubled. Absolute joke.

They say the little clubs get nothing. Well there are more of the little clubs in the league now that the big ones, why don’t they get together and do something about it.

I’d like to see Milijas get a start now. Either in the holding role or alongside Jones.

I think it’s likely though that Mick’ll play Mancienne, Edwards and Jones instead.

I feel for Milijas, he’s got undoubted quality and potential. He deserves another chance now that Henry is suspended.

Once again the need for television replays is the only answer particulary in instances such as this one and also for penalty decisions which are not clear cut.
The advantages would outnumber the disadvantages and games would only be disrupted for the odd minute or 2!
Referees are only human and cannot see everything and although their assistants should in most cases see what the referee has not, they can also (and do) make mistakes as per Drogba’s goal against Man. United last week.
Andre Marriner has made a load of mistakes this season and you only have to replay the matches he has officiated to prove that and in my book is a poor referee but that obviously is no help for Karl Henry!
Arsenal, as always, complain about every little thing and other clubs must be very wary of even breathing upon their players for fear of breaking a leg! I always thought it was a man’s game and not for ballerinas!
Never mind Karl, keep your chin up, there will be next season all being well for you and your teammates to show Arsenal exactly how hard tackles can be. I’m sure they will look forward to playing us again?

Propper tackle – nothing more and nothing less. When Rosicky goes down squeeling like he’s been shot (only to get up an participate in the next attack) and the rest of his team mates immediately surround the ref demanding a red card then sadly the ref is influenced.

Move on – we’ll miss the skipper but Jody has done the job well before and we have plenty of cover in Milijas, Guediore, Mancienne and Edwards.

It was ridiculous how much moaning Henry and McCarthy have done since the weekend.

At first Wenger called the tackle a dark orange but we have since seen Rosicky’s leg and Arsenal FC are certain that the red was justified. Also. It is the rules. Simple.

A definate red, and Henry’s responce ” I got the ball and the other players got me sent off”

Two feet off the ground endangering another player is classed as RECKLESS.

The question to the Wolves Captain should be .
Why did you go into a lungeing challenge on the half way line when a player was going accross the pitch and you had 11 men behind the ball the situation would not have lead to a goal or was you just trying to act like the division 2 clogger that you are.

He should not try and blame the reaction or the referees interpretation for an act of stupidity on his part.

Henry is paid a lot of money and has a responsibilty to lead his team by example, if he sees a loose ball it is his duty to put his foot in and try to win it. Against a physical side like Stoke we have to go for strength and players who are not scared of a tackle. I would personally opt for Jones and Gueddiora with Mancienne covering the back four.

A sliding tackle from behind is a serious foul – no question. Whether it’s bad enough for a straight red card isn’t so obvious. It depends on whether – in the referee’s judgement – it was malicious, studs were up, it was two-footed etc.

The reason Wolves can’t appeal is that there are no objective criteria on which to claim an obvious error by the Ref. The fact that a majority of fair-minded observers wouldn’t have sent Henry off doesn’t matter. But.

Henry’s feet weren’t raised, it wasn’t two-footed, and he appeared to touch the ball first. No question that the Ref was influenced by Arsenal – by Wenger’s media campaign, by the exaggerated writhing of Rosicky, and by the players who surrounded the Ref. Would he have sent off Henry against any other team, in any other stadium ? I sincerely doubt it.

And that’s the point for those who think the red card was deserved. OK, fine. Now let’s see the same judgement applied everywhere, consistently. No game would finish with 22 players.

15, Can I ask why it is good to be a Gooner because for me, I dont see how you can relate to any of the indiviuals that play or manage you.

City have signed your best defender and striker. You havent won anything in years. None of your team represent England, unless Walcott gets bribed into the squad by Wenger again. When you played and lost in the Champions league final there was not one British player on the pitch, an insult to the history of Arsenal and 120 years of the FA.

Your ticket prices are double everyone else north of you, Chelsea have eclipsed you, your in a boat load of debt, which may be lightened once Fabregas decides his new club for next season.

Also, could you please tell me why it took your little girly foriegners 94 mins to score a goal against a newly promoted 10 man Wolves?

You may scoff at the fact our ferocious tackling captain (not) is from Willenhall, our winger cost £40000 from Grays and our forward is the centre forward for the Irish, whom were robbed of a place in the World Cup because of your ex-cheating French mercenary, and i dont mean Anelka! your snobbery will smooth over the fact Wolves are not in debt, we are building a new stadium with our own cash, a stadium which will remain on site in Wolverhampton and still be called Molineux, not the Emirates in Cannock. You can ignore that an adult early bird season ticket starts at £16. You may sneer at our manager, owner and chief executive whom are all english, and your blinding tabloid opinions will ensure that you think you are a great team, and the pinnacle of Premiership football, but im afraid the truth is your not.

So its not really good to be a gooner….its embarassing.

So trot on Cockney and leave the real football to the real clubs and real fans.

There is an old saying, ‘people in glass houses should not throw stones’ and most of your teams have players who commit fouls way over the top and GET AWAY WITH IT!
In answer to ‘TA6′, Wolves have not appealed because the referee will not change his mind about the red card – why? Because referees do not change their minds as it would make them look incompetent – which many of them are!
And why would Wolves risk doubling Henry’s suspension when the referee stands by his original decision? – A 3 match suspension is bad enough but 6? – TOTAL LUNACY!
As for no.20 Eric Martin, if that is your real name which I doubt, we will be seeing you next season in the PL! Going back to the incident; if “the club firmly believes the decision was wrong” but is too worried about the consequences of an appeal being turned down, then how can the FA claim to have an appeals process in place?

The FA should introduce instant video replays to help referees and linesmen to make the right decision – even if it takes minutes – rather than making the wrong decision on the spur of the moment, which seems to happen an awful, awful lot, considering these people are paid professionals. Why not have a second, equally ranked referee, in front of a video monitor, and have him/her communicate with the on-pitch referee before game (and potentially season) changing decsisinos are made? Look what technology did for tennis once the stuffy, oak-panelled boardrooms of those who regulate the game took the brave decision to rely more on technology i.e. the Cyclops machine took away some of the built-in human error that all of us possess, and reassures players and fans alike that the sporting contest will be officiated with consistency, accuracy and without bias. In my opinion it’s now time to move on from the debate of Henry, this sending off has been comimg for a long time, and he has been lucky on several occassions.

I think it’s time for a change in tactics to a more attacking formation as we need to win some of the next few games, if we are not careful we will be out thought as the opposition will know how to combat us. I also think that Doyle has been looking jaded and cannot continue in this one up role for much longer, we need someone along side him (not keogh), to give him space to score goals that’s after all why we bought him. I also think losing Henry will show different play in the midfield, with much more forward play as opposed to the constant square and back passing he has been doing, he also puts players under pressure with this square passing which usually means more back passing. I aslo would like to see Jones play in his position, and I still think Foley should be at right back.

Let’s leave out what us Wolves fans and them Arsenal fans say, lets face it we’re both biased. Andre Marriner (or “the worst ref in England” as the rest of the premiership call him) is renowned for dishing out red cards – the stats are something ridiculous like he has sent off twice as many people as the next “most harsh” ref. Surely Henry and the other players should have known this and should have been more careful not to dive into tackles in this manner – teams prepare to play inm certain styles to win games against other teams so why aren’t the players also factoring in incompetent referees?

I was at the Emirates on Saturday and it was never a sending off. On the other hand, every cloud has a silver lining and the good news is that Henry will not play for 3 consecutive games. On the evidence of the Arsenal game, Mancienne is superb as the holding midfielder. Foley would be my second choice ahead of Henry, who (in my opinion) is a very one dimensional player. Mancienne, Jones and Edwards would be a great trio in central midfield with a little bit of added flair that we need when going forward. If only we had a natural wide right player to deputise for Kightly.

My prediction is that Foley will move infield (which I wouldn’t object to) so that Stephen Ward can start wide right (oh dear).

Having said that, it’s just an opinion. I don’t want to knock Mick. He got us up as champions on a shoestring and if he keeps us in the Premier League he’ll be undesputedly the best manager we’ve had in my 39 years as a Wolves fan.

So he may have got the ball but he also got quite a bit of the guys leg as well. Having said that I still don’t think it was a red card.

    Grace,
You ask since when has a tackle from behind been a sending off offence?. Long before you were a twinkle in your fathers eye. Certainly before the fancy coloured cards. Mick-Mac knows going through the back door is a sending off offence, thats why he wont put his money where his mouth is. Never mind all this can’t beat the referee drivel. Can’t understand you dingles backing Barcelona tonight as they are totally the
opposite to Mick-Macs ethics?. I have to say I’ve
always had a liking for Barca going back to the days of Di Steffano and Gento, I saw that side down the custard bowl, Cowshed end. My half brother was a wolves fan and he bought me a ticket. Barca have always been a (no contact outfit) propper footballing side. You know, just the opposite to you HOOFBALLERS.

Messi 4 Arsenal International All Stars 1. I am sure Messi was offside for at least 2 goals. Arsenal whinge about the tackles, but they will not win anything of importance until they have someone who can do the same as Viera did for them. Come on You Wolves

Or have you just staggered back from, your local dive of a pub after drowning your sorrows til the early hours, coz you can’t afford Sky in your bedsit.

Somehow you don’t seem so cocky this morning????

And for the record Di Steffano play for Real Madrid, give your rose tinted specs a wipe.

Boing Boing??? Thought your anthem was 1 – nil to the arsenal????

Or have you nicked something else from another club???

15 – ‘the only way someone like Henry will get into the papers is to have a pop at Arsenal’

i cant really think of any other way wenger gets into the papers other than MOANING MOANING MOANING – and correct me if im wrong but i though they were footballers, not celeb gossip page fillers – PATHETIC. glad to see barca won so easliy last night.

heres to a proper game of football (used to be considered a contact sport) this wk end between 2 teams that dont swan dive every time they get tackled

    Back on topic.

I really wish that Wolves would appeal against this.

It may be a small risk but while teams like Wolves take bad referee decisions against sides with moaning managers on the chin, its the moaning managers and their teams that benefit.

Feel really sorry for Henry since everytime i have seen the tackle i only see a player taking the ball and doing everything possible to not hit the player.

The FA should also look at all the Arsenal players who surrounded the referee, no doubt influencing his decision.

Stick Guedioura in, job’s a good un, no harm done, etc. Henry’s been a bit hot and cold anyway, although recently he’s tended towards the “hot” rather more.

What a Messi you made of your Champions League game last night – destroyed by ONE MAN!
