McCarthy hoping for Emirates fortune

Mick McCarthy today admitted Wolves will have to be “bloody fortunate” to come away from Arsenal with their unbeaten record intact.

Wolves aim to make history on Saturday by stretching their undefeated run to five games, which would be their longest sequence without a loss as a Premier League club after taking eight points from four games.

Birmingham drew 1-1 against Arsenal last Saturday on a pitch heavily criticised by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

But boss McCarthy admitted Wolves will not have the same advantage going to the Emirates Stadium.

“Birmingham were at home playing on a small pitch that I don’t think was too great and it does have an effect,” he said.

“Birmingham are a bloody good side in the top eight, it was no mean feat.

“But we’re going to the Emirates.

“Can we win there? I haven’t even given it any thought yet.

“We’ll get organised and we’ll do our best.

“If both teams play as well as they can, we’ll have to be bloody fortunate to come away with something.”

McCarthy acknowledges Wolves are going to be huge underdogs but warned critics writing off his side may be disappointed.

Wolves will actually be trying to make it a treble of away wins in the capital this season after already beating Tottenham and West Ham in their own backyard.

“I was an avid Leeds fan as a kid and I never thought we’d lose to Sunderland in the FA Cup final, it was just never going to happen,” he said.

“Is it likely? Are all the bets going to be on them? Of course they are.

“Hull went there last year and won, so you just don’t know.

“I just never discount myself from anything to be honest.”
