Mancienne eyes ‘capital punishment’

Michael Mancienne is relishing a return to London on Saturday as Wolves head south looking for their third victims of ‘capital punishment.’

The on-loan Chelsea man is hoping Wolves can stun Arsenal just as they did Tottenham and West Ham on their own patches.

Mancienne played virtually a full game at Upton Park in the 3-1 win widely acknowledged as Wolves’ best Premier League performance eight days ago after coming on for the last 20 minutes in the 1-0 success at White Hart Lane in December.

And the 22-year-old, who was ineligible for the 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge under the terms of his season-long loan, is looking for more of the same as the Spurs and Hammers performances as Wolves make their first trip to the Emirates.

“The boys have been playing well and had some massive results recently,” said Mancienne.

“I was just pleased to come in and start the last two games and play some part.

“West Ham was particularly enjoyable because we played some really good stuff and looked comfortable.

“When we went 3-0 up we were able to relax and really enjoy the game a lot more.

“It was just great to be involved.

“When the team are playing well you want to play as many games as possible.

“I’m looking forward to the Arsenal game.

“It’s going to be tough but if we can play like we have been in recent games then we can give a good account of ourselves.

“We did well against Arsenal for half an hour in the home game and I think we’ve showed we can compete with the big teams.

“We’ve just got to do it again on Saturday.

“No one is getting carried away with our position.”

After playing in both full-back positions for Wolves as well as central defence, Mancienne is now making his name as a holding midfielder.

As someone who is comfortable on the ball, it is a position the 6ft England Under-21 international enjoys.

“I’ve played in this position before but I’m learning about it more and more every time I play it,” he said.

“I’m happy playing anywhere I’m put but I do enjoy the midfield role.

“Being involved in this sort of survival battle is really good experience for me.

“And to be doing it in the top flight is particularly important.

“This is why I came here to pick up that sort of experience.”

Boss Mick McCarthy said Mancienne’s future will be discussed at the end of the season.

But the player insisted he is only focusing on Wolves ensuring their Premier League future.

“I’m not even thinking about it (future) to be honest,” he said.

“All I’m concentrating on is these last six games for Wolves.

“As to what happens after that we’ll have to see.”
