Villa’s striker crisis with Carew injury
Tuesday 30th March 2010, 11:28AM BST.
Villa are facing up to a striker crisis ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bolton after John Carew revealed his troublesome back problem has resurfaced.
The free-scoring forward, who has netted nine goals in his last eight games, was forced off with a recurrence of the injury in the second-half of Saturday’s humiliating 7-1 drubbing at Chelsea.
With fellow front-men Gabby Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey also nursing injuries, it leaves rookie Nathan Delfouneso as their only fully-fit striker ahead of the Reebok Stadium clash.
The Norway international missed three months of last season with a similar injury and Villa are now anxiously awaiting the results of scans to learn the full extent of the problem.
But the signs do not look promising after the former Roma and Valencia man admitted leaving Stamford Bridge in excruciating pain – potentially leaving his season hanging in the balance.
Carew said: “I tried to continue, but after the break it felt like I had two knives in the side of my back. The pains can come and go and now they seem to be back.
“I will be examined and treated in Birmingham, so the next 48 hours will determine how long I will be out.”
News of Carew’s injury is a fresh blow for injury-hit Villa, who are trying to recover from their demoralising defeat in the capital.
Key trio Stiliyan Petrov, Richard Dunne and James Milner have all recently been playing through injuries.

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
