Slory scores first-ever Albion goal
Tuesday 30th March 2010, 9:29AM BST.
Dutch winger Andy Slory scored his first-ever Albion goal last night – but it was not enough to prevent Burton Albion’s reserves claiming a notable revenge victory.
The Baggies gifted the visitors an opener just two minutes into the game, as Alex Monk dispossessed Paul Downing and coolly slotted home.
Slory, who got 90 minutes under his belt, levelled with a thunderbolt 10 minutes before the break.
But the wide man and World Cup bound New Zealand striker Chris Wood were guilty of missing further good opportunities to put the hosts out of reach, before Burton substitute Benn Minshall snatched a 79th minute winner to avenge their 10-0 hammering by Albion in November.
Promising young defender Downing continued the sometimes painful learning process with a slip in concentration which gifted possession to Monk on the edge of the box, who beat goalkeeper Dean Kiely with a composed finish.
That was after barely a couple of minutes and left the Baggies edging their way back into the game with a couple of good efforts from Wood – both set up by Albion Man of the Match Sam Mantom – which saw a right-foot shot and then back post header fall wide.
Canadian prospect Marcus Haber is another getting to grips with the English game at second team level and in the 35th minute the tall striker pulled the ball back for Slory to hold off a challenge then fire home home a blistering shot into the top left-hand corner.
Ethan Mannion and Wood then came close to putting Albion ahead before Kiely showed there’s plenty of spring in his 39-year-old legs by dashing back to defy a clever Monk chip just before the break.
Then Slory should have put the Baggies in front after the interval after catching last man Ben Turner in possession. The winger raced in on goal but fired straight at another goalkeeping veteran, 46-year-old Kevin Poole, before his follow-up effort from the rebound was cleared off the goalline.
The Dutchman was also defied Poole in the 71st minute with a 20-yard drive before Burton burst forward and, although Kiely did well to save substitute Ben Spargo’s effort, the loose ball fell to Minshall who scored from close range.
There was time for Downing to try and make amends for his earlier error with a late Mantom free-kick, but the defender headed over from close range before the same provider sent Slory into space in the first minute of stoppage time, but the wide man could only curl his 15-yard effort into Poole’s arms.
