Foley plans to be a secret weapon

Wolves’ Mr Versatile Kevin Foley has been told to become the team’s secret attacking weapon.

Foley has emerged as one of the team’s unsung heroes of their recent revival, often going unnoticed by many at wide right in the revamped 4-5-1 formation.

The 25-year-old is the only player to have been involved in all of their last 19 games starting with “Old Traffordgate.”

But the utility man is practising to slip under the radar and stay upfield more.

He said: “The gaffer has said to me last couple of games try to stay up there – don’t be as honest trying to get back as a second full back because we need to break at times.

“In the last couple of games I’ve found myself supporting Kevin Doyle a bit more, but I think there was a lot of getting used to the position.”

Foley is also putting in the hours on the training ground by practising his shooting in a bid to end his goal drought.

He said: “I find myself practising before games – you never thought I’d be doing that last season. It’s something you’ve got to work on and when you get the chances you’ve got to be able to take them.”

The former Luton player is also aiming to make it third time lucky in front of goal after hitting the woodwork at Bolton and West Ham recently.

He said: “It would be nice. I said to myself ‘third time lucky’ when I take a shot because I’ve hit the post twice, so next time hopefully it creeps in rather than coming out.”

Foley has no qualms about getting forward, happy in the knowledge that Michael Mancienne is holding the fort behind him.

He said: “It allows me to bomb on a bit definitely because you have the insurance behind you and with ‘Mance’ there it allows Karl Henry to get a bit more forward, because he isn’t just a player who wants to scrap and stop the ball coming through.

“We need players like Henry to get on the ball because that is what he is good at.”
