McCarthy’s gauntlet to Wolves squad
Friday 26th March 2010, 11:40AM GMT.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has thown down the gauntlet to his entire squad to end their Molineux scoring drought and ease their survival fears.
The team remain the Premier League’s joint lowest scorers with Portsmouth on 28, but bizarrely only the top five teams have rattled in more than McCarthy’s side on their travels.
But that leaves the paltry 10 they have netted in front of their own fans as comfortably the division’s lowest home tally.
David Jones’s match-winner against Tottenham on February 10 remains Wolves’ only goal at Molineux in six games, although the opposition included Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.
But with seven in the last three thanks to top scorer Kevin Doyle and Jody Craddock boosting their tallies to seven and five respectively, McCarthy stressed the need for goals to come from all departments and for his players to carry their excellent away form to Molineux.
The manager said: “We need goals to come from everywhere. We’ve got to try and take our away form to Molineux but, that said, our performances at home against Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham have been terrific.
“We’ve just scored seven goals from three games, so a glut of them have come along and they’ve come on the back of us playing well.”
McCarthy believes certain players have merely been unlucky in front of goal.
He said: “Kevin Foley hasn’t scored but how closer can he get than the underside of the bar? He’s had chances and he’s hit the target. He’s also had efforts on goal against Birmingham and Chelsea.”
Winger Matt Jarvis’s many extra hours on the training pitches have been rewarded with two goals in three games and four in 12.
McCarthy reckons the player has earned his reward.
He said: “We have to get them from everywhere else and Jarvis has been terrific. How’s it come about? Because he practices, he works at it and trains hard. He’s been conscious he hasn’t scored enough goals and he’s had chances and gets himself chances.
“Matt works hard at it and is still only young. He had no Premier League experience.”

Be nice for us lot if we did better at home but the bottom line is staying up that’s all that matters. Clearly if next season is in the Prem. we need real quality alongside Kevin Doyle.

Our players are coming into their own now, and as theyre all only young, theyre only going to get better. It would be difficult for me to pick our player of the season this year simply because, even though kevin doyle is quite clearly the most talented and gifted footballer at this club, i feel matt jarvis has done fantastic especially as the season has worn on, and i feel Marcus has done a teriffic job in goal, Jody craddock has done a fantastci job in defence but i feel that im judging him in respect to his age, and if Jones was playing earlier in the season he could have been another contender.
As for scoring goals, we had four shots on goal on tuesday and scored 3, and the fourth hit the bar. All 3 goals werent the easiest of goals, and when you compare that to earlier in the season when players were squandering a host of chances, its clear to see that there has been a clear improvment in front of goal. Hopefully it continues.

There is no doubt that as the season draws to its end our team have come to grips with the Premier League after a long and hard battle. We reckon that our players had no experience in that league and only through hard work that they can get something out of this long and very difficult season. They are still in the danger zone despite moving a little bit clear of the fellow strugglers. Of course we are in a better position to save our season but there are some tough games lying ahead so the manager is keeping his fingers crossed. We can see some of our youngsters are making great progress and some are not because of injuries and still not knowing how to cope with the stiff demands of Premier football. We still need to know whether the likes of Iwelumo, Kightly and Ebanks-Blake could copy those who have shown they can fight in that category. So if Wolves do survive then all our youngsters who helped our team clinching promotion will have another opportunity to try their luck. Wolves need now two more wins or roughly seven more points to stay in the Premiership. That will be great. Then they can ponder on the ways and means how to strenghen the squad to be better equipped for next season. Let’s hope we get the points to avoid the drop.

Belief that you had what it takes to excel in the PL is paramount and tantamount to forging and establishing in it.
Wolves has what it takes to do that and more. The team has come of age and will go further to gain a name for themselves in the PL.
With the spirit and camaraderie in the team, it could only get better in performance and confidence.
