Wolves eye Pompey double raid

Wolves are eyeing a double raid on Portsmouth after the Premier League opened the transfer window early to allow stars to be sold to ease the club’s £60million debts.

The Express & Star understands yesterday’s decision to allow administator Andrew Andronikou to sell players outside the window has alerted manager Mick McCarthy to resurrect the two deals the club were outbid for by Pompey for last summer.

Defensive midfielder or centre-back Aaron Mokoena is thought to have turned down a move to Molineux at the time, while winger Tommy Smith is believed to be the other target.

Mokoena, 29, signed a three-year deal after being released by Blackburn, while same-age Smith – a McCarthy capture for Sunderland in 2003 – signed for four years for £1.8million from Watford.

The Wolves boss revealed last month they were outbid by Portsmouth for two players and both of these have the Premier League experience the club tried and failed to get last summer, through Mokoena’s four years at Rovers and Smith with two at Watford.

McCarthy said at the time: “We had a player in my office and wanted to sign him, but we couldn’t match the deal being offered down there.

“Then another one we were trying to sign and we were negotiating with also ended up at Portsmouth, on a deal we wouldn’t be prepared to give him.”

Should Wolves agree anything, Pompey would insist the players are loaned back to them for the rest of this season.

Both Mokoena and Smith started last night’s 5-0 home defeat to Chelsea, while Smith scored his first goal for the club in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Hull.

Pompey are all but doomed after their nine-point deduction for entering administration, but Wolves may still need points to avoid the drop when they go to Fratton Park for their final away game on May 1.

I sorry but i wouldn’t touch either player with a barge pole, Mokoena didnt want to know us before all he wanted was to get as much Money as possible he’s another ‘gun for hire’ who goes to who pays the most money, he’s not interested in Wolves, doubt he even knows where Wolverhampton is even.Has for Tommy Smith he’s gone backwards in the last two-three years and is no better than Halford/Surman etc, if we stay in this league and its still IF yet, then next season we should be able to attract far better players than either of those two mentioned above. And should be looking for a better class of player who’s had 3-5yrs PL experience. Besides can anyone tell me WHO they would replace in our team at present ?. Lets keep what we’ve got and wait and see where we are next season before buying new players. Hopefully we will still be in the PL, and playing like we are i think we will. GOOD LUCK FOR SATURDAY LADS. UTW

I think they would have been good additions for this season however, are they better than what we have? I don’t think these are the types of players we are looking for; we need to build on what we already have and add more quality to the squad for next season. They would be squad players at best.
How about Sidwell from Villa, Carlton Cole from West Ham, Bentley from Spurs or Piquionne from Portsmouth (Parent club)
As soon as we’re safe we need to get busy so we don’t get left behind

Dont particularly think these will improve the team substantially. Hopefully if we do get them, we can get them on the cheap though. I would have been more inclined to sign Belhadj if anybody. This shows the reasoning why we didnt sign allot of players in the transfer windows though. If you end up upping your bids to outbid other clubs, you will just end up in portsmouths situation. Would have liked to have seen some more players signed but not at the risk of doing what portsmouth have.

One player i would like to play for us next season no matter what league were in is Jamie Carragher, at 32 and years of PL experience he would be an ideal CH and Captain. I accept he’s to old to play FB, but i believe his best position as always been at CH. He leads by example he goes in hard but fair in tackles and wins 95% of them, he communicates well as a captain too, and with his experience playing at the highest level ALL his career and playing in the European/Champions League Cup he would get the Respect of every player in the squad, and hes got a good few years left in him in the Pl yet, has it appears Raffa doesn’t fancy him anymore as he speaks with the wrong S word its ‘Scouse’ and not ‘Spanish’. And if he turned out as good as the last CH we had off Liverpool ‘Crazy Horse’ ( Emlyn Hughes )who helped us reach our highest position 6th and win the League Cup in his time at Wolves, he would be a ‘Top Signing’ UTW

Even though i dont think these two players would be too much improvement, maybe tommy smith on the right wing might be a slight improvement we shouldnt judge potential signings. As i remember, at the start of the season, when we were signing Doyle, the majority of you were slating the signing and saying he was no better than ebanks blake, how wrong you were then. Let things unfold as this story is just rumours as far as i can tell at the moment.

Also O’hara and Dindane are on loan at portsmouth and therefore would not be eligible for sale until the transfer window and from their respective clubs, tottenham and lens i think. As for the money grabbing mercinaries comments, who isnt in this day and age of football. If you think we will sign someone with premier league experience and who isnt in it for the money, your probably sadly mistaken.

Firstly, Some of you seem to have forgotten O’Hara is a SPURS player and cannot be sold by Portsmouth.
Secondly,Wolfeyusa. E&S HAVE got their facts straight. Pompey cannot just sell players and then continue to play them, they would have to be loaned back, not a problem, but, legally a necessary procedure.
Actually this also allows the new parent club to invoke the option of not allowing them to play should there be a fixture between the two clubs (which might be the case should we take either of the two mentioned players).

It is too early to talk about signings for next season, let us get the job done first. One thing is for sure if we do stay up,it will be great achievement.I thought we had blown it by not making the signings in Jan.I dreaded the thought of a return to the Championship, and to spend at least another year with the elite would be absolutely wonderful.

I love the way people who have been on here all season saying we are going down are now on saying what we should do for next season in the prem. Lets worry about this when we have more points than 3 other teams can get.

PS Keano back to the Wolves would be a dream!

Why the hell should we be going after
    (a) players that chose money over us, when they had the chance? Let them stew in their own juice – they are not worthy of joining our self-motivated, young and hungry team;
    (b) players from a team that are ending up at the bottom of the league? One is a defender from one of the worst defences this season!
    (c) players that are not, now, as good as what we’ve got?

Sod ‘em – they had their chance to come here and put two fingers up to us……….

We want to go forward now and IMPROVE the team with better player, not backwards with average/worse players!!!

There’s a big matter of pride at stake here also, for Godssake – Surely, we are too good a side now for these 2 mercenaries……

OK OK OK, get a grip. This story is from a hack who couldn´t find anything else to write about on a thursday morning. Euphoria is still rife after the Hammers made us look like the Old Gold of the fifties with a 21st century slant. Let´s not get carried away, we´re not home and dry in the prem yet but might be if we all get behind the lads against the Toffees come saturday. No more bitching please UTW.

When Mick first came to us he inherited half a squad, with only a few weeks to go until kick off. He brought in some decidedly average players, strengthened in January and moved most of them on by the summer. I was expecting a relegatioin battle and we finished in the play offs (for only the 4th time).

Again, in the last close season we had just made the quantum step up to the premiership, he again needed to get more players in as the squad was far too small for the premiership. Again he has tried to strengthen in January, with less success this time, and will no doubt move on some of the squad players signed last summer, bringing in some quality instead – as he always has done.

Mick is not afraid to buy a player, and then move them on if he’s not 100% happy with them. Eastwood is a classic case in point. Who misses him now?

These two are a throwback to when we needed to pack out the squad for the start of this season. We have now moved on. Mick will have bigger fish to fry (unless we can get them at a rock botttom price & on relatively low wage).

    In Mick I Trust…

Mick i’ve been a doubter about the way you work but keep on proving me wrong chap.If i was to comment on anything it would be to bring a TOP class striker in (please come out of retirement alan shearer!). Also if you can persuade someone like paul scholes(remember Irwin and Ince), then we wont go far wrong.

Oh dear, some talk of transfers and people start returning to dream land. Even if we do stay up doesn’t mean we are going to start attracting England internationals. Someone suggested Walcott, Warnock and Crouch. Its great to be ambitious, but be realistic. Even IF these players were to leave there clubs, there are more established teams in the league who they would go to. Start getting realistic or prepare to be disappointed.

It is too soon to talk of getting more players as the season has not ended and maintaining PL status is still not confirmed.

As to the interest for Aaron Mokoena or Tommy Smith, I think if players did not take the first offer when given and see fit to join another for more money then the loyalty of the players when the chips are down will be questionable if they are in the team.It is best to look elsewhere to look for players to add to the quality of the team albeit for reasonable wage and transfer fee.

Wolves is playing with belief, determination and drive which is what it should be and playing as a team.

From darkness cometh light… Up The Wolves and 1-0 for Saturday against the Toffees.

So leave ‘em at Pompey an’ let ‘em rot
Shoot up to Glasgow an’ talk to Keane
Get him back in before he’s a has-been
Now that Zubar’s shootin’ from the hip
We gotta stay tight an’ keep our grip
Want a squad player with ideas that are new?
Head down there an’ take a look at Kanu
We need defenders with a real mean streak
Instead of monkeys who’ll let the goals leak
If you pay peanuts you will get monkeys
    Jailbirds wasters an’ washed-up junkies
So stick to our guns go for young an’ hungry

Oh God! Don’t say poor old Mick is going to have to perform another miracle next season with Morgan and Moxey ONCE AGAIN doing things on the cheap. If we want to push on to mid table or even higher then we have to get rid of those two bozos and get a committed back room in or all the hard work will count for nothing. Players of the calibre of these two would not improve our team but O’Hara might, if we could get him then great.

    Its just paper talk!

We should try for a few Portsmouth players though – Either Dindane or Piquionne, Tal Ben haim perhaps? Their best player is O’Hara but obviously he’s with Tottenham.

Not the players rumoured though, especially if we would have to loan them back because that Smith would only be worthwhile for the remainder of the season so Foley could switch back to right back.

Any players we bring in must be better than those we have already otherwise theres no point. We have good players in most positions but when we are looking to bring in new players they must be better than the player we have already, no matter how good they are. This is how we will improve!

I’d rather them go for someone younger like the young lad Junior who came on for West Ham in the second half than a 29/30 year old.

The team that beath West Ham the other night apart from 3 players was effectivly players that were in Championship squad.

youngsters on the wings and a bit of experience in the centre and some fresher legs at the back and someone who can put themeselves about a bit to assist Doyle.

Suggestions on a post card please

Is Kightly all done ? I can’t believe only Stourwolf brought this up – there is no need for a desperation signing like Smyth (Championship calibre) when we have Kites and Keogh. Central defenders, a partner for Doyle and a midfield general are our priorities in that order. WOLVES 2 EVERTON 1.
